These folks were smart for young people who are not mechanics.... My bus has an International DT466 and its a hell for strong engine... imo the best diesel put in the 1990's school buses.. Non electronic and a true medium truck diesel engine...mine has an allison but i would have taken a manual trans without thinking twice... If your going to actually travel then get a good used international inline 6 diesel bus and leave the gas ones alone..
I am curious why they specifically requested a 466 and not a 444 or 360 and also I would have chosen a Thomas Built bus instead of a BlueBird since Thomas buses usually have more head room. I like the color but it would have been nicer if it was a darker metallic green. It might have been cheeper to just swap a few seats around to face each other than to remove them all and put in other furniture. This seems like a very interesting thing to do though.
the dt466 diesel engine uses wet sleeve cylinders so if the engine needs work you can rebuild it without having to remove the entire engine, this is very cost efficient for repairs. also, the engine is pretty strong and proven over time
@gjlannet .... Because the 444 is a V8 and not the same series as the DT inline engines.... the DT360 is the same as the 466 and while not quite as powerful its no slouch and a viable alternative to the 466..my buddy has the 360 and hes had zero complaints...Both engines are hell for strong and uber durable.. not so the 444 which is basically a 7.3 and not really a medium duty truck engine... in short they suck compared to the DT engines which imo are the best engines every put in a school bus.
