I think that Ruth Buzzi is one of the funniest people ever! I just watched some interview clips of her and jo anne about laugh-in. So great! She said she took three of doors from the joke wall after the last show. Good for you Ruthie! Thanks for being so wonderful :)
I never thought I'd get to sing operatically with such a legend! I had to make myself go off key to make it funny for the kids watching Sesame Street...but she was surprised I could hit some of the notes in this little segment!
@RuthBuzzi1 Hello Ruth Buzzi, my name is Patrick Gaddis. I'm almost 16 years old, but I still love Sesame Street. I remember watching it when you were in it. You always cracked me up. I really miss seeing you as Ruthie. Have you ever considered going back? Also, I hope you don't mind, but I've started writing stories for Sesame Street, and in one of my stories, Maria says that you moved to New Jersey. I also included Around The Corner and Finders Keepers is a Laundry Detergent Store now.
@RuthBuzzi1 This was my first exposure to real operatic singing.I was sick home from high school and turned into sesamie street. I had never heard anything so beautiful. I ended up going to music school and although I never became an operatic super star, classical singing is still my passion. The first time I met Ms Horne, I recounted this story to her. Thank you for making this such a great memory for me. I know I wouldn't know do what I do if it wasn't for this sketch.
Ruth Buzzi has a great page on Face Book where you can see her videos and lots of great work from the 60s 70s 80s and 90s...and some from the new century, too. She's alive and a love and well and married, with a wonderful life in Texas where they own a farm near Fort Worth.
This is an amazing piece of video. Buzzi sings note for note with one of the greatest operatic voices in the world, and had to deliberately go off key to make it funny...I know, because I was there. Ruthie and I have been married for more than 30 years. Thought you'd find that interesting...kp
I remember seeing the one with Madeline Kahn when I was very very young. I saw this one when I was in high school. This one had more effect on me because of the sheet beauty and flexibility of Ms Horne's voice. In fact...this very episode was the first time I had ever heard of Ms Horne and one of the reasons why I decided to train as a classical singer.
Marilyn Horne was actually quite pretty as a young woman. She performed the first recorded version of the Christmas song "Angels We Have Heard on High" I had ever heard. Also, for trivia's sake, does anyone know in what movie musical she dubbed someone's singing voice before becoming an opera singer? This is a trivia question.
Y'know Ruth would have a great voice if she was being serious. I heard it in her fiddle diddle dee right when she the highest note. She just needs to not have vibrato just as she hits the note. But I have a feeling she knows that.
this is one of my favorite songs from sesame street....and one of my favorite opera singers...wow what a combo, i feel lucky...and i enjoyed this...sesame isn't the same anymore (then again i'm 18 now) ruth was one of my favorite people...i love the fiddle diddle dees this shows how amazing marilyn is. (ornamentation on sesame street who'd have thunk it lol)
I so remember this this rocks. Ruthie is so cute, funny and loverble so is Ruth Buzzi who plays her. I like it when she says that goes double for me. And I like Marylin Horne says Like I said grwat costume. I think Ruthie sounds like Carol Channing and Katherine Jenkins.
~*this sucks. old women and bad entertainers should leave it to the pros like grover and madeline kahn they will always remain the greatest...jeez could sesame st really not find anyone better?*~
I wish Marylin Horne was my singing teacher. I wanna hire her one day she is so ace. Ruthie well she is ace. Everytime I see people singing oprea like Katherine Jenkins I think of Marylin and Ruthie dressed up in oprea outfits. Ruthie rules.
I love Ruthie. She is so funny. I like it when she goes over the top. Has anyone got the videos with Ruthie called cooking by the numbers with chef Ruthie.

which came first, this or madiline kahn's version? I really love them both, my 2 year old listens to both at least once a week.
SholomGootzeit 1 year ago
@SholomGootzeit The Madeline Kahn version was first (about 1977); this version (with Ruthie and Marilyn Horne) was from the mid-late 1990s

Way to show your ignorance. Both in knowledge of women comedians from our past, and in your choice of judgemental words.

I love this! Totally ridiculous but it shows that opera can be fun! Love Marilyn Horne, one of my favourite mezzo sopranos!

Although Marilyn Horne is my very favorite Soprano, I have to say the Madeline Kahn and Grover version has to get the points here... :-)

I agree. This is no where near as good as Madeline Kahn and Grover.

Absolutely! Madeline Kahn' and Grover's version is a real gem!
