smash it with a hammer, into thousands of little pieces, then flush them or drop them into a river. glass platters, read it up on wikipedia, even the 'deskstars' were glass. right from their website it says.
thats junk, i have a few hard drives that ive removed the top casing off to access the internals, and they still work, even to this day, 2 to 3 years down the line.
I actually had one open the other day, my laptop hard drive.. had it connected through usb, playing music off it while it was open.
even burning the platters wouldnt stop people accessing the data on it, Recovery experts can still get data off even if if was smashed into 100 pieces, It wud take a long time, but can be done
thats a laptop drive. all u need to do is smash the platters with a hammer, it will distinegrate into thousands of pieces. those have glass platters , btw. do that and your data is gone, forever.
@c0rrupts3ct0r555 Glass platters??? i can assure you, there is not 1 hard drive in the whole world that has glass platters...
I even have a laptop from 1979, and had the hard drive open, and still has metal platters.
It is impossible to have glass platters, the platters are metal for a reason, to be thermotransmetically conductive for the head to read, Glass would completely ruine that, therefor its 1000000000% impossible
@ThePCgamer1989 you are wrong.. take a normal laptolp hard drive. 4gb and up... and smash it with a fuckin screwdriver.. they shatter yes? also you dont know about the IBM deskstar 60,75 and 120GXP.. check the vids on my channel. they smash and break into pieces, shards.. all laptop hard drives are glass.. EVERY ONE! i've busted so many...
I think theres a much simpler way... Some software allow you to overwrite all the data in your drive with a random series of data. That way the HDD remains competely usable.
hammer into smithereens and distribute slivers among 20 or so trash bags over the next month(s). Anyone who can recover that deserves to steal my identity.
@batmanpronz spin the disc, get a metal thing and scrap the foil. bend and twist and destroy the reading-needle, grab the transparent disc, and hammer it into pieces, then burn all of this shit. done. not even 99.99999999999999% retreivable. just 100%.
@batmanpronz In theory If you have access to a nuclear reactor you could use part of the control array to magnetically scan all the piece, work out what order they go in and then read the data. In reality you data is destroyed.
Remove the casing and cover it in thermite... That will not only melt it to putty, but take it pretty far past the "Curie point" which completely annihilates any magnetic charge.
thats a laptop drive.... if u really want to destroy the data smash the platters there glass and will shatter. after that sm,ash the platters into tiny little pieces boom ur datas sure to be gone then
I've get to tell you, you are very wrong to think that your hdd is useless after just being opened. If you want to verify this take off the lid of a hdd you don't mind to lose but make sure you've installed an OS on it first. Then take off the top, leave it connected to your comp and boot. It should work for up to a few hours depending on how dirty the air is. Also, many data recovery services could EASILY get all that data back.
@mygaffer I think he is refering to the regular joe smoes who finds your hhd in the trash and such. Most Joe smoes arnt going to spend mulah sending it off to a lab to recover your My space and Facebook pics . lol
Just throw it in the river.

1. take out the disc
2. rub it thoroughly with magnets
3. Put the disc back in
4. run it without the cover and scratch off all the metal with a flat screwdriver
5. If you want to, you can break and burn it.
PS: I've never tried any of this beyond the 2nd step.

the only way to erase date is :
1) polvrize the plate (like with a sand grinder)
2) insert disk into strong elecritc field... but very strong... otherwise data are still readble.
go and have a look for "ontrack" on google..

Touch it? It's magnetically stored. So even scratching it with a nail will leave data intact.

@mygaffer the thermite option works, then the blowtorch, then the 500kv option to the platters, then sending it thru a hdd grinder..
