Maruja (1967) was shot in the Mateo house in my hometown, Bustos, Bulacan.
The bahay na bato was owned by Dona Florencia Mateo, known as Capitan Penciang.
Construction of the house began in the mid 1860's and was completed in 1888, under the supervision of a certain Cojuangco, a Chinese mestizo "architect":
Capitan Penciang (She was really called capitan, not capitana.) died a spinster.
She bequeathed the house to her niece Tomasa who married Salvador Jacinto.

@jiminiroski Maruja didn't kill herself after she wed the governor general. She died of heart failure, an illness she developed during her long wait for the return of her childhood sweetheart Gabriel who was cast away by her parents 10 yrs before.
Before the wedding day, Maruja went to spend the night in Gabriel's villa where their love was consumated but only after "marrying" themselves in front of God. Highly emotional but it didn't need a BED SCENE to emphasize their great love.
@jiminiroski In the 1967 film, Maruja died of heart failure. Siguro iniba to get away with parallelism ng Romeo and Juliet story. Naging more impressive kasi it showed the effect of Maruja's faithfulness in waiting for Gabriel to return after they left the villa 10 years before. Can't watch 3x kasi 3.5 hrs ang film ...LOL
@novarich007 : Thanks for your input. I believe you now! (hehehe!), and I'm more than eager to find copy of this film kahit na putul-putol o kaya panay gasgas na, basta meron pang kopya, mapanood ko lang.

@jiminiroski Can you please upload also the other song "Adios Mi Amor" that was sang by Maruja after she was wed to the gobernador heneral. This is more "haunting" than the theme song. This is the flip side of the 45 rpm single released to the market in 1967.
It was uploaded here in You Tube. I search mo na lang.
@jiminiroski Yes, it is the song that Susan sang in the 1967 film. The piano version was also the backgound music in many parts of the film kaya nostalgic talaga.
It's very sad kung totong nasunog ang film copies of the original Susan-Romeo Maruja (1967). I saw this 7 times when I was young. I have been scouting for a dvd of this classic to no avail, yun pala it's lost forever (?). For once, I am forgeting my values...SANA MAY MGA PIRATANG DVD na noon bago masunog ang Lea Productions.
@mrjoaquin357 That's very good news if what you saw is the Susan Roces-Romeo Vasquez film. That's the original. So, may pagasa pa pala mapanood uli ito. I am now a senior citizen and I'll pay even P1,000 for a DVD.
@novarich007 my mistake, the one I watched was the one with philip salvador and susan roces. That's maybe why it is so clear. Anyway it was still an awesome movie I think. Sorry I was wrong I thought this was the one I saw.
@novarich007 : Ha-ha-ha! Nakakatuwa ka. Sana nga noon pa naimbento ang cd, dvd, or vhs and beta, saka internet para ma-download na lang, bago pa masunog ang Lea Productions. But I'm still hopeful merong isang collector sa abroad na nakapagtabi ng kopya nito.

Since we don't have the 1967 Maruja of Susan Roces, why don't you guys watch the 1978 Gumising ka Maruja. It's likewise great and Susan is likewise amazing and pretty there.
thank you for the movie clips. i've always wanted to see the original film as i am an admirer of the actress susan roces. likewise, i want to watch the horror remake as well. if you have the film, we would appreciate it a lot if you could post it here.
The remake of this film starred by Carmina Villaruel and Rustom Padilla suffered in comparison with the original film. However, if you want to see the remake, it's still available in Viva Films. The "other" Maruja (Gumising Ka, Maruja) by Lino Brocka has been shown (and replayed) in Cinema One. Just wait for their replays.
Nah! I only want the 2 movies that starred Susan Roces. I'll scout and scavenge for it. hehehe. This is also judithellenlicht. I'll watch out for the 1978 Gumising ka Maruja on Cinema One. I better buy the tv guide.

i saw this movie i think 3-4 days ago just this month of august on cinema 1 (on philippine cable channel). it was nice. susan roces was amazing, shes so beautiful at her younger age...
Orielle21, the movie you saw on Cinema One is not the Maruja of 1967 but the movie directed by Lino Brocka, Gumising ka, Maruja (1978), which is entirely different from the original Maruja, a romantic love story. Gumising Ka, Maruja, however, is a horror film with Susan Roces playing the role of Nina Concepcion, a comebacking actress filming the life story of Maruja.
