I was first introduced to Billy Joel by Todd Manson of Miami. His dad was an executive at Burger King. I love Billy Joel, and I was pulled over by Delray Beach, Florida police for playing this very song full volume at three am driving down Federal Highway from Linton Boulevard traveling North....
@thesacks9 listen man not trying to be mean but you hear lyrics in the title.....well unless you're mentally ill then you shouldn't see lyrics in the title so there should be no lyrics
The Piano Man loves Oyster Bay and OB loves you, Billy..lot's of good memories of you hanging with us in the local bars..and us all driving to the 'city' to hear you perform in Greenwich Village back in the early 70's.. before anyone knew just how famous you'd be one day!
ohhhhh lord one of my ALL TIME favorite albums. amazing. just one of the greatest ballads ever written. and as for family guy? well, in my opinion its quite an honor to be immortalized with family guy, so good for that. I saw billy joel live once... one of the greatest nights of my life. simply amazing.
@andy6pm no he was dead a few minutes after he was shot by pat garret. garret came into the room that billy was in. billy then pulled his gun but didn't shoot, and then garret shot "the kid" because garret was hired to kill him.
billy joel is so amazing. he had so many good songs that nobody had ever heard of, and so many good songs that people have heard of. I also know so much about billy the kid, so i love this song
@PlasmaBurst2Man I listened to the 'Songs In The Attic' album a lot when I was in my early teens. I haven't listened to these songs in years, just thought of them again on a whim today. I had no idea it was on Family Guy though, I don't watch that show.
@PianoManAM I dont see why people like you are so against popular media giving songs like this proper, modern recognition. do you think yourself some kind of hipster because you knew about this song before it became more well known? do you not want people to know about this song? wouldnt you want more people to like music like this if youre a fan of it? personally, im just glad that billy joel is getting a bit of love from an audience closer to my age thanks to family guy
The Piano Man album is my favorite album of Joel's. His older music is so incredibly good. I used to listen to this track and the others for hours on end in my bedroom. What fond memories...
I used to listen to this song like everyday on my dads record player when I was younger along with other bands like Alice Cooper, The Beatles, Donnie Iris and The Cars =D and I'm only 19 haha
@DantesTear keep it up kid, you'll be awesome for life.
Nowadays bands like Andrew Jackson Jihad do the whole folk thing a completely different way. It's pretty cool, i suggest you check em out. <3 folk punk
@HammyTime13 Yeah the song is historically inaccurate(although I think it is supposed to be like that as a reference to how stories of the old west were often exaggerated including stuff about Billy the Kid.)
@HammyTime13 there is a big debate about if Garett actually shot Billy or not. You can find some of this debate online. How much is true or not, i don't know. just gotta do your own research. if you are interested
"Billy the Kid" was indeed shot, not hung, and a lot of other stuff in the song is also false, like his birthplace etc.. (Some sources even suggest "Billy the Kid" was from New York, like Billy! (Who will from now on in this post be referred to as "Billy the Awesome" to avoid confusion.)) Billy the Awesome has even taken to introducing this song in concerts as "completely, historically, totally inaccurate", suggesting we're not the first ones to notice this...
@jeroenenvandammen2 In the last verse, there's a six-pack. But it's not the same Billy; it's the one from Oyster Bay, Long Island, who is also not the same as Billy Joel. It's some guy Billy Joel knew. He was drawing parallels to the future...or something.
"Billy the Kid" was indeed shot, not hung, and a lot of other stuff in the song is also false, like his birthplace etc.. (Some sources even suggest "Billy the Kid" was from New York, like Billy! @TatsuJay: I've loved this song since I was about 5 years old in 1982. I just saw the Family Guy episode with Peter playing the piano part and I just about pissed my pants laughing!
@TatsuJay Ha ha, in all fairness to Family Guy though, just watched the episode of Family Guy and heard this tune for the first time and loving it!!!! If it wasn't for Family Guy I'd of never heard it.
the greatest part of this song is it showing Billy's expanding musical talent by incorporating the use of symphony instruments unlike his other songs. it almost has the classic "big band" sound to it with the horn section.
OK, I like this song TOO but not because because my name is Billy or it mentions my home town...or because I'm a bank robber, or a gun moll. I just love this song cuz THE BOMB!!!!
I just heard this song on my bus ride home.. I only remembered 2 of the words.. But lucky for me Billy Joel has a very distinct voice - Thanks for the upload :D
