The combination of these two problems are catastrophically dysfunctional when you consider that the nation as a whole has taken on these values at a personal cultural level.

"Freedom" as an American Civil Right has been misinterpreted as the freedom to be mentally lazy.

One cannot expect to participate constructively in reality if you are not plugged into reality. To do that takes discipline, perseverance and a willingness to understand (not just learn).

Sadly the corruption at the top is only indicative of the long term structural (societal) problems that "runnaway democracy" will inevitably produce. You can try and reign in the power freaks at the top of the power ladder but that is only curative not preventative.
