  • I watched this yesterday at my school's Women's Conference. She is a very determine woman. She do not want to be on welfare and she walks 10 and a half miles to work thats what you call a strong independent woman. Her son should be a little more supportive because everything is on her her and she is making a way to support the and have a place to stay. They also looks old to get a job, but Tammy you go for a job well doe...

  • It is interesting watching this. Some say the solution is for the rich to be taxed more. Some say that it is up to them to work their way out. I think atm there is no golden solution. This women has a strong resolve but her son wants a future. I think the inevitable truth is we are watching youtube from a computer and our lives are not this bad. We are also probably not the rich. Our society is very class oriented and the only way up is a good mix of hard work and luck.

  • I watched this in my Sociology class. Very sad. =(

  • very sad

why cant We help people like these? We are "AMERICA" land of opportunity!!

  • motherfuckas, spending billions of dollars every year on dogs food and cats luxurious stuff, when families like that even don't have home to live. fuck you all so pathetic...=E]....

  • does anyone know of any other great stories inspirational, sad, interesting, shocking ?

  • Mr. Decker sent me here

  • It's just unacceptable hat there are people with countless millions or billions while other people can barely earn enough to survive... The rich SHOULD pay more in taxes,They can afford to... OCCUPY WALL STREET!

  • @JDCT37

    Epic fail.

Like all working poor, Tammy pays a ridiculous amount of unconstitutional taxes. Her money is taken by the Federal Insurance Contributions Act. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says three-quarters of taxpayers pay more in payroll taxes than in income taxes. FICA IS AN UNFAIR TAX ON THE POOR! The solution is not to compound the theft by stealing from the wealthy, but rather to reduce spending and taxation by the Federal Government.

    Get educated.

    Vote Ron Paul.

  • After watching this, I realize that I'm so lucky to have never gone through anything like this family. It's one thing to be struggling as they are, but another to be ridiculed and looked down upon for doing the right thing....working for what you want. I'm so inspired by Tammy. AMAZING woman. Keep doing your thing Tammy, your father is smiling down at you!!!

  • shout out to SOC101

  • @sweeet2012 whoop whoop!!! OH YEAH!!

  • Tammy is probably one of the most admirable people I have ever seen. She's a great human being.

  • Neither the Mom nor the son is at fault. It's all perspective. But I don't understand why her freaking son isn't working!? I when I was in HS, I had my own job.

  • I dont know why tammy hasnt had one of her hood rat kids give her a stolen bike to ride to work...

  • Wow. Your son is a douche. :/ That is so awful.

  • Umm...at 2:50 did she say that her dad had 22 kids? Is she miscounting or...did her dad really have 22 kids? O_o

  • @KirschSalvator Because that's a hell of a lot of kids!

  • @KirschSalvator i was like maybe thats why you were poor thats a lot of mouths to feed

  • the kids look old enough to work and help out. any sign of their father?

  • Did anyone notice the hickey on the kids neck and how that older guy with a beard dosent have a shirt on and neither does the kids brother and look at how the friend looks and touches the boy. Idk what is happening in that house

  • Could anyone tell me whats going on in this video`? My english is really bad and I didnt get it.

  • I saw this story in a workshop I recently attended, "Bridges Out Of Poverty". There is an amazing amount of resilience that Tammy has. No matter what "class" you're thought to belong to, we can all relate to wanting to make our parents proud and be the best person we are able to be. God Bless...

  • @snbblackangel I hope it's 10.5 miles round trip...

  • This family is worse off than folks in the hoods.. It is not a matter of managing money, its not having enough in the first place. If you have been poor you'd understand.

  • This family is worse off than folks in the hoods..............

  • This is one of the saddest things Ive ever watched.... But in ways we all try to fit a certain standard like her son to appear "normal" .

  • @joshbwarren1

Oh I get it, because dumb people are poor, right?

  • @joshbwarren1 it might not be that she’s not capable of knowing the advantage to get a bike for her commute, she might just be unable to afford one and unwilling to do anything illegal to acquire one. Please don’t start blaming the victim for being in poverty, our social structure has a lot of contributions to her situation as well...

  • @NewsPope you are a fucking idiot

  • @exhibitzachx actually exhibitzachx newspope is right there are people worse off in other countries just being in america is a privilege because people are dying just to get here to scrape in a few bucks

  • These are the people that I'm going to fight for with everything I've got. The democratic party will stand by the middle class no matter what scheme with GOP and their super greed wealthy elites have to say about it! Proudly. Staunchly. Liberal and fighting for the middle class and working people

  • This is so devastating. I feel for this lady, as well as her children.

  • Ahhh, I quite feel for her. At least she's making a contribution to society by working; and working 10.5 miles a day. What a woman. She has ambition to want to teach. Why not? Why are we so obsessed with how people look, as opposed to what they've got to offer?

  • Tammy is so cute, she has a heart shaped face, she looks like a fairy :)

  • If you go onto PBS's website for 'People Like Me', you can see an update on Tammy's life. As of Dec '09, she still worked at BK but lived closer to work.

  • @nyislandgirl87 I looked and couldn't find it.

    Where's the link?.

  • bunch of arm chair idiots slammin these folk, like you guys are all that...im sure if cameras entered your houses people would judge your asses to...so just stop...shut up and listen to the show...man..glad to see so many social workers here with the answers...PFFFFFFFFF...

  • Just watched this video in my sociology class today. This women is really trying geez she walks for 10 1/2 miles it's sad to know she works with ppl that will not give her a ride how sad is it that the community or school has not got involved to help her. Matt should be proud of his mother she is really trying.

  • WOW! America is the greatest place on earth indeed! hahahahahaaaaaaaaa

  • Your Mom is a hero. It's love that matters, not how much mony she has.

    I really like your MOM.

    Greg

    Boston

  • 22 fucking kids!!! There's the problem, right there! That's what started this! She can thank her degenerate, low-life father for creating a permanent underclass with his own semen...

    This is just sad...

  • @karmacandle

Really? So who is responsible for the 4 children? Him or their mother?

  • Comment removed

  • 50,165 people viewed this video, probably more, and no one has been able to help? All I see is "I like to but..." excuses. WAKE UP PEOPLE, stop thinking about your own situation and reach out to help others, where's the encouragement or leadership? People are stuck in there own imprisonment because of lack of leadership from those who are willing to make the difference. I know how it feels to have the back against the wall, I lived outta my job & truck for 8mos. what kept me going was my vision

  • I also saw this in my sociology class and it is amazing how people are treated.

  • this movie is a few years back if I recall right, I hope that son went into the military or something and made something of himself and then went back and helped his own Mama, he seems smart enough to have done something. That is the only way out of poverty to take whatever ya got, smarts, ambition, looks, appeal and claw your own way out I hope the boys don't feel lazy anymore and that they have done something to fix that situation and help her out as she gets older. GB

  • hicks.

  • haha everyone's watching it for sociology. thumbs up if you go to cascadia! i agree its her parents fault not hers. making something out of nothing is not easy. i say take the welfare to buy some fucking clothes and a heater obviously she could use the help.

  • Google peoplelikeus/supporttammy and you will find a link.

I found this link and it looks legit, for those who want to help Tammy.

  • Walks ten miles to work and refuses to be on welfare. She is the example to follow. God bless her.

  • @pineapple1969 If the welfare improved her children's prospects maybe she should take it. God bless her- the American dream is elusive especially if you have no help.

  • I saw this in my sociology class today and it broke my heart! Tammy's story has been haunting me all day, and it's sad that there are so many more people out there in the same (or worse) situation!! Personally, I really don't care for material things, but what I do care about is that people have equal access to resources to lead more comfortable lives, and I'm making it my mission to help those less fortunate. I just can't sit back and not do anything about this...

  • This broke my hear. I wish I could help!

  • I've added a link to the page for supporting Tammy to description of the YouTube video (YouTube won't let me post it here).

  • @aaronsw if any one wants to communicate with tammy let me know and i will let her know. she does not have a computer but i work with her and we are good friends.

  • @HatersWillHateOnMe22 Hello, I just posted a similar response. If a few of us would help, we could at least tow her car to a garage and see if it is fixable, group together and pay for it. It is is not fixable, we could either buy one from charities here, I donated one myself once, they sell them cheap to the poor. The Salvation Army has programs to put people into cars. If you get a response as to how to reach her, or just the town she lives in, let me know. Her name is Tammy Crabtree.

  • @KQU11 I personaly know tammy. iwork w/ her, she does not have computer but she could call or write. i wish i could help her but i struggle my self she is a wonderful lady.

  • Does anyone know how to contact her? I am in a sociology class as well. If some of us banned together we could get her car repaired or replaced very reasonably. If you cannot understand how hard his life is, then you have never lived through poverty.

    Kristy

  • Im watching this for Sociology but does anyone know where I can contact PBS or contact this woman? I'd like to help her out any way possible, this story broke my heart.

  • She's pretty!!!! She has a beautiful face!!!!!! A sweet spirit!!! I feel so bad. I understand the hording part. It's tough. I wish she made more money if she made more she could live in a better place. People judge so harshly. I'm sure if she had better teeth people would treat her better. Poor thing!

  • Amazing that this has to be this way for millions of people in the greatest nation on this planet. Something is definitely wrong and yet it goes on and on and on....

  • What is the update on her life? I wish her all good things and I hope things have eased up some economically. Most JDs and MBAs don't work as hard as you do.

    The Lady Has Class !!!!

  • God Bless Tammy And Her Family :D. She Will Have A Better Life Someday :)

  • Poor lady....this made me cry.

  • Why did she have 4 kids if she didn't have the money? Why did her father have 22 fucking kids if they were poor?

  • You will always be a hero to me Tammy

  • How many kids does she have? two or four?

  • We do not know enough about her prior to her working at Burger King. Did she have the means to support a family, before she chose to have one? One of her sons says he is a couch potato because that is all he knows...well, who taught him to be lazy? She was on welfare for 18 years?! Really, does it take that long to decide to take care of one's family? I think she is using her parents as a scapegoat for being poor all of her life. It is a choice to be lazy, not a destiny.

  • The Lady is kind and hardworking. She isn't judging anyone. A five mile walk to work. Work hard all day and walks five miles home. She has my Respect.

A Classy lady - She doesn't need her hair pulled back, the black expensive dress and mom's pearls to have class.

  • Hopefully she had a change of clothes. Looks like she got soaked on the way to work.

Her "preppy" son seems pretty smart.

  • There are so many mean, hateful people on Youtube. Unbelievable or is it? I spent allot my time posting good advice for Tammy and other poor folks. I'm in the same boat and posted my comments from my own experience. So don't go saying I'm "talking out of my ass" you ah. You know where you can go you wicked person. Leave me alone. Just don't say anything you "B".

  • This person said I was talking out of my ass and what a horrible thing to say to someone. All my comments were from my real life experience and my knowledge of fed help programs etc so you can't even say I was talking out of my ass. I was trying to help. I am sorry for any hurtful words I said; I didn't mean any of the so-called put-down words. Now I still think the 10 mile part is not true but was put in to make it "a good story". If she can walk 10 miles to work she's rich in health.

  • I'm wondering if the 10 mile story and I believe it to be just a story unless

Tammy is an exceptionally healthy person. And to walk 10 miles would have to be an exception to the rule. I don't think it can be done because she would be so sore the next day (her muscles) that she would be unable to do a job. I think they (the movie people) had her put this story in just to make it a better story. A person doesn't have to lie to get someone to help them. Honesty is always the best policy.

  • @TheGoodSharer yes i work with tammy she realy did walk 10 miles each way she lives closer to work now about 5 miles. i know the oldest boy never went to collage. he did appoligize for the hurtfull things he said in the documentry a couple months ago. the boy that says hes lazy i dont know i will ask her wednesday when i see her. the sad thing is she has a huge knot on the arch of her foot. she does not have insureance so when she can she holds her foot up at work.

  • I had meant to come back to this site earlier and then I forgot. I feel bad that I said any negative comments about this woman. Like some of the words I used to describe. She does seem like a very nice person. The most important thing about a person is the goodness in her heart and she seems like a good person. Nobody, including myself, has any business judging another person especially when they don't know them at all. I, like Tammy, have been treated badly by people so I can relate.

  • This mother seems a mix of ignorant and mental. She seems kind of nice but she gripped about them putting stuff where she couldn't find it. This reminds me of a bad situation me and my son were in and the woman threw a fit at us over something little like this. So I'm wondering if she screams at her kids. I tell you nobody can walk 10 miles to a job. This is a bunch of crap.

  • @TheGoodSharer I commend your amazing ability to not only know details about her situation that are not provided anywhere in the video, but also your wisdom in knowing EXACTLY what she should be doing to make her situation better. Not to mention taking up an entire page of comments so no one can miss it.

Seriously, though, you are talking out of your ass. All of your posts are exactly the definition of talking out of your ass. Your posts could be the talking-out-of-your-ass litmus test.

  • @gildebrant Now that is a very mean thing to say. I have no idea what "talking out of your ass" means but it sounds pretty bad. It's the kind of comment only a bad character would say to someone. I apologized about a few neg words I said about Tammy. Now look I know first hand from being poor all my life and having to walk places (long distance walking) and 10 miles to work, even one way, would be an impossibility. No one has to lie to get someone to help them.

  • I'm wondering if this is really a true story. I mean this mobile home doesn't even have a furnice. It would be declared unlivable. In Ohio it would be pretty cold in the winter unless this is south somewhere. How many kids does she have that are in high school. (?) Well she doesn't need to work at BK if it's that impossible to get to. She can collect public aid on all kids under 18 (I think).

  • @TheGoodSharer after the documentry aired the health department condemed it

  • @keatonk4 really are you serious? Did the health department make these people homeless? NO WAY!

  • Where I use to live in IL I had to make a long walk once down this old highway. It would have been 6 or maybe 7 miles to the edge of my city. I was not able to make it all the way; I luckily got a ride from someone. I had to stop in this inn and I asked for a ride. So this 10 mile thing is just not true or it's pretty unbelievable to me anyway. Most poor people I would think don't live to far out of the city unless they have a car and most poor folk can not afford a car.

  • I was thinking about this story again. You can't believe everything you know. For her to walk 10 miles to her job would not be possible. She would literally have no energy left supposing she could even make it there. Even a young person would have a tuff time. I live in KY and my son and I asked this young woman for walking directions. She told us it was 2 miles and it ended up not being much more then 2 blocks.

  • If poor kids do well in school and get good grades they probably can qualify for scholarships to go to college. They can also get pell grants to go to college. Make sure your kid finishes high school because it cost to take the GED test or cost more for a home schooling high school diploma. Do not put your kid in special ed. Some special ed teachers abuse kids. That younger kid is really beautiful but I'm wondering if he has some mental, or emotional, problems. So she could get him on SSI

  • This situation isn't necessary. Sorry it isn't. She doesn't want to sell this property (assuming she owns it) to get on HUD rental assistance. I'm guessing. This situation is ridiculous. The problem is some poor folk are kind of ignorant but most know the system. Most poor blacks know the system very well and so do I as a poor white. But this poor woman is to proud or wants to keep that property or something is wrong with this picture. A poor person can live in the projects or Sec 8.

  • cont: There's no reason why a poor family in the United States has to live in a place without a furnace. If you own the property sell it and rent a place since some of these help programs you might not be able to get on if you own. You would have to have a car if you live 10 miles from your job. I don't see how this woman does this. I'd be afraid to walk that far to work in this day and age. She needs to sell the property and rent a place in town. How do they get to school - by bus?

  • Help info cont: How would this mother even have the energy to do the job after walking 10 miles? I know from experience that a poor person is usually depressed and fatigued the bigger part due to lack of healthy nutrition and vitamins. And this is because a poor person can't afford to get healthy enough. I don't see how this woman does this. She could get on Sec 8 allot faster since she is living in substandard housing. There's no reason a poor person in American has to live in these

  • Help info continance. Go to the kinds of churches I know from experience will help poor people, even ones that are non attending or non members. The Mormons (both sides) and the Penticostals. Sorry I can't spell. Take her (Tammy, the mother) to the local mental health center. They will help her. And if you, the mother, is to proud to accept these types of help I've laid out then I guess you don't really want your situation improved.

  • This is what needs to be done. So if you know this poor mother take her to the housing authority to sign up for Sec 8. Make sure she has signed up for food stamps. If the mother or any of these kids have emotional or mental problems help them call Social Security to get an appointment for SSI. The younger kid seemed like he has problems and would probably qualify. Go to the office of the LDS Mormons and the other Community of Christ. They help people.

  • @TheGoodSharer her kids are grown she is not eligible

  • To kk4 If it's true you really know this family personally I hope you don't tell people on the internet details (even city and state) where they live because there's no telling what kinds of people are watching this here on youtube. And the peoplelikeus website has changed their names to keep their info private so it's important you keep these things private. I hope you realize this.

  • @TheGoodSharer tammy knows i comment on her she said it was fine they did not change her name or where she works . she has no internet so she looks forword to me telling her whats being said

  • Wow - bless Tammy - she has the drive and desire to take care of herself and her family - she is a hard worker and keeps going. How about extreme home makeover? They could help her. I will be praying for her and her family. I wish we could get an update!

  • I personly know this women and she is a lovely person. I wish i was in a position to help her she still walks to work 10 years later

  • that older kid is a f ing loser, cant he see that hes mom has given upp everything to help hes ugly ass. these kids needs to wake upp.

  • I also had to watch this for sociology. My professor did some research a couple of years ago to see what became of Matt. According to her he went to a community college for a short time, dropped out because he wasn't prepared, got his girlfriend pregnant, and got a job at a factory.

  • Has anyone sent this video to Opra or some other show that helps the less than fortunate?

  • I had to watch this for sociology and I almost couldn't believe it. I give the mother credit, for not accepting welfare and trying to make something of herself. My only questions is....why PBS was filming this, were they unable to give her assistance? maybe a ride to work when it was raining out, while they were filming?

  • I watched this in Sociology class and felt that I should think more about how blessed I am and what I take for granted.

This woman is certainly a trooper, walking that far to work, raising two kids, and dealing with what people call her. I honestly don't know why somebody could just drive past her and call her names instead of picking her up.

I think until a better opportunity arises, that she should get on Welfare though...And I'm glad her son is trying to make something of himself.

  • @lori286787 **4 kids

  • Saw this last week on my sociology class. Truly is very sad. I was hoping that there would be other videos regarding Tammy and her family. How are they doing?

  • Down the road from the house in Chicago is a spa for dogs & people in the U.S. live like this. It makes me very angry & something need to be done to stop it.

  • good luck for the kid that plans on going to college, it's all up to him

  • If you clean a little at a time, tell yourself today I'm gunna pick up the clothes, tomorrow go thru the yard and pick up cans, next days sort the clothes, after a week the place will be cleaner. (I hate cleaning too but I do one thing a day, one day will be cleaning day, next day laundry day, next day organize the closet, next day is steam the carpet day, etc) If you do one chore a day, you won't be overwelmed, try it.

  • it's so sad because you can see the sadness and despair in Matt's eyes. His mother is so sad also....depressing.

  • i feel so bad for the mother. she might wear the same clothes because she spends her money buying clothes for him.

  • Sad story, Some times we as people take life and the luxury we have for granted. i hope her kids go to college and give their mother a better life. 10 miles of walking 2 work, wow.. I don't think i could walk that far.

  • What was she singing on her way to work?

  • Tammy is truly an inspiring person. She does everything she can to give her children a better life and to support a family. She has so much determination and commitment to her family. She walks 10 miles to work everyday rain or shine so she can work at Burger King and clean toilets. In a way its very metaphorical she walks through whatever life throws at her. She is a true hero, and deserves so much more than she has, she is a beautiful person and i have so much respect for her.

  • Regarding the son, I am somewhat sympathetic. Growing up poor is traumatizing if you cannot accept that is what you are. I grew up poor as well, and it is both humiliating and disillusioning. It doesn't matter how much money you have later on. That bitterness and fear sticks with you for your entire life. The mom tries her best though. She does what she can with what she has. It is not her fault really. It is her parents for having 21 kids. That is highly irresponsible.

  • *sigh* this made me feel so bad that i'm taking so much for granted. and i felt so sad that they harrassed her on her way to work. and it's also sad that her son doesn't want to be seen with his younger brother just because of the way he looks. that's when the world's gotten in between you and that's the saddest thing.

  • She has 21 brothers and sisters?! That is the first of many things that amazes me about Tammy. <3

  • Did you see this at the Easton in-service? I just saw it today and it didn't make me feel too good about myself. This woman rocks! It would be so easy for her just to give up, but yet she goes on. Maybe some of our teachers will stop complaining about not being able to have appliances in their classrooms anymore and realize that other people in this country have real problems.

  • man when i heard her say that she has to walk 10 miles to work everyday and people call her trashy bitch in stuff like that i applaude her for showing pride that she wants to work and does care about her life and wont let shitty people make her feel worse...this is just a very sad story...she could easily give up and go on welfare, but like she said shes gonna work and try her hardest an hopes to go to college on day...im rooting for her

  • I agree with you! Thumbs up!

  • @nflnick11 thumbs up!

  • there's nothing worse than seeing someone try to provide and help their family and they just can't get out...they can't get out! I hate to see people suffer when they are trying their hardest to do the right thing. She could easily file for welfare and stop working like some of the people I know who rely completely on the gov't but she doesn't do that and that is an example of her extreme courage and ability. God bless her and her family!

  • Do you have the other part of this episode (the "Redneck Olympics")?

  • I watched this video at school today and was very affected by it.

  • i think tht son's jst going thru tht phase... whether u hav money or not, being a teenager is a tough stage

  • shut the fuck up dumb bitch jesus christ

  • I do give this Lady 10 out of 10!! She's a Winner, she just don't realise it!

I do find Classes interesting, I also Hate class, No One is better thank another one!

That Lady is trying her heart out, and I just hope those kids get the breaks they need, and they will re-pay her for all the work she put in!

    Neil from England.

  • "Homes" that look more like the quickly built shacks for the "bombed out" or fled Europeans after '45 are something the US society cannot be proud of.

  • This woman is a HERO. I hope her kids get jobs and help out their family. ABLE Bodied boys being couch potatoes and not helping clean up their crap! C'mon!!!!!!!!! Get off your ass and help your poor Mother!

  • Hi sweatintotheoldies, I agree with your comments, ya don't get anything in this world without working Hard!!

It's people like You & this lady, that Inspire Me!

    Have a Great Day!

    Neil from England.

  • This mother is a HERO, your right! Instead of going on welfare she is a great American working everyday. This is the hard working attitude that our country was built on.

Did she say she was one of 22 kids?

  • This mother is a HERO, your right! Instead of going on welfare she is a great American working everyday. This is the hard working attitude that our country was built on.

Did she say she was one of 22 kids?

  • @sweatintotheoldies Tammy is a Hero your right!

  • My heart goes out to this woman, she is trapped between not wanting to be on Welfare, but not being able to really make a living otherwise.

I hope her son goes on to do great things and helps save this family

  • My paper boy when I was 21 was one of five kids being raised by a mentally disabled couple. Both parents worked and all five of their kids, once they were of age had jobs. The meak will inherit the earth.

  • And how is she going to feed her kids, and buy them the stuff they need for school etc. Are you nuts?

  • I guess you didn't read my comment throughly. The woman and the family I was describing was on welfare. Therefore they had a family income. A welfare check. Since they all pulled together and helped the family was a happy, clean and healthy. They had NO self esteem issues.

  • you are dumb

  • why would you say that?

  • logical fallicy, personal attack ^_^

  • damn,at first i was laughing, but i am got very very sad. usually white trash people make me laugh, but this documentary is really really sad.

  • So, this person is "lazy and being punished by God?"

Helping the poor and advocating for the poor is the greatest of Christian vocations!
