I think the cross sectioning helps you see if it's a uniform growth of fat cells (not that dangerous) or if they built up like a pearl around a cancerous growth, contain foreign matter or infection, etc. It's just safer to cross cut it and make sure nothing is inside the mass that could mean a bigger problem later on.

Thin sections (~ 3 µm thick) are then cut, mounted on a slide and stained for microscopy.

omg,, so do I. You can see it if I wear a tight shirt, so I always wear loose fitting tops. One doctor tells me I should definitely have it removed. Another tells me as long as it's not growing or causing any problems, it's ok to leave it alone. Are you having yours removed? I'm scared.

my boyfriend discovered my then pea-sized lipoma about 13 years ago.  it's now apple sized, but growing only very slowly. i could get it removed, but i don't see the point. it's not causing me any bother. plus i know of people who have had theirs removed, only to have it grow back again. mine is clearly visible in loose fitting tops, so doesn't make a difference what i wear. i think my lipoma needs a bra! lol. my doctor says not to worry about it. good luck with whatever you decide to do x

a lipoma is a benign tumor. It's harmless other than in it's appearance.

So, no, your friend didn't die from a lipoma. This specimen was rather large, but equally as harmless as the smaller ones that pop up around old age. You must be thinking of some other form of cancer.

well that was the cause of his death. it was really sad u know. that was the only thing keeping him away from school and it has a very awful smell. we thought he will survive bec its just lipoma. but then maybe it got worst and he died.

You might be thinking of a lymphoma. There's quite a difference.

Lipomas are fatty tumors that do not exit past layers of skin, don't have any sort of smell, and appear only as a bump on the surface.

Lymphomas, on the other hand, can be lethal.
