I agree that prevention is a difficult task. It's likely that regardless of the environment, altercations will occur. You can see this in very 'civilized' tribes or bands that are very tight knit.
How we handle the aftermath of these altercations will likely be the most important part. For that, I would highly recommend something on the order of Restorative Justice. I highly recommend googling that.
I actually think that one of the problems with the education system is the emphasis on equality. If we're afraid to have losers, then the idea of winning, of excellence, means nothing. Everything becomes mediocre. And the bottom line is that equality is a myth in nature. Not everyone has the same level of intelligence, the same power with words, the same ability at sports, etc. Stratification is at work all across nature.
@darrylsloan I agree that people are not equal in every respect but as human beings, we are all equally important. We all know a lot about a little and a little about a lot. And we all have different skills in different areas. Society will never move towards mediocrity as long as it values this diversity of strengths. If someone is apethetic or lacks confidence then they may never know or develop the strengths that they have.
So basically, as predicted by many, if man has pride in himself, and has his needs taken care of by the community (with his participation), as it is in prison, then there is no violent crime.
Your comment on shame and lack of respect is important: its a massive theme in all the evolutionary psychology stuff that I study on how and why people deal with things like cooperation and its breakdown. Hunter-gatherers use it as a social tool, and try to avoid it too. It is evidence our social environment molded our brain in our evolution.
I think the psycho/sociopath thing is complicated too. There are folks with a predisposition who can be not just fine, but very successful.
@Neanderthalcouzin I definitely agree mate. It is a combination of nature and nurture. Though a sociapath I know had a very troubled upbringing but that may have been because one of their parents was a sociopath.
