Wow... and I thought guitar was hard... this is the real deal, playing by ear and no frets! One day I may have the guts to learn it, but for now.. where's my guitar .. ^_^
@SapphireCountryJewel This would be a slide of the note which is more a fiddle technique. For violin playing, you want to place your finger on the exact spot you are trying to hit and try not moving into the note unless you are trying to do a slide.
@eldavison1 You can use stickers or there are also tools like "Finger Finders" which you can tape on the instrument. It is very helpful being that the violin is a fretless instrument!
i have a full size violin becuase my arms are long enough (just barly they said)
but i cant seem to get my hand and finures stretched far enough to reach the notes you were showing....? please help...stupid small finures are killing my style here?
i dont get why everyone wants to play every instrument? ive been playing guitar for 9 years and now finally feel comfortable learning another instrument (violin) why not spend your time learning one really good before learning something new?
@stevosmusic I agree that it is good to focus on one instrument but I think it is also good to be versatile and have the ability to play multiple instruments. If you have knowledge of a previous instrument, it certainly does help you learn other instruments.
@SkeletalClown What I'm doing is putting peaces of tape were my fingurs go. I'm just watching this because I haven't played my violin in 6 months and I can't remember what the notes sound like...
i get a violin tomorrow. so excited. currently in the middle of a philosophy in music which means i have to explore and learn all aspects of music. i have learnt trumpet, piano, drumset, bass guitar, harmonica, ukulele and currently on grade 4 vocals. now im just waiting to learn the violin, flute, banjo and guitar. then ive completed the philosophy. :)
i'm trying to learn this very hard xD i have been playing trumpet for 6 years and piano for 4 i think piano helps you understand a large portion of the music world in most cases
My Teacher Tought Us On The D and A string First Now We Are Starting To Play Songs On The E And G For practice on the G string We Play This Old Man And To Practise On the E String We Play I think Pop Goes The Weasle And Some Other Song Im not Sure If Its The Right Song I don't Have My book:)
@PaulaAbdulRoxxxx6 You're never too old to play any instrument. Don't worry about it. I've been playing guitar for almost 3 years, and I'm 21 now. I picked it up so easily and now I want to learn the Violin. If you put your mind to it and are passionate about the instrument and music, then you'll go far. :)
if the reason you wingle your finger (s) to make the note prettier, or is there some deeper meaning? also, i'm 15, is that too old to learn to play violin? im pretty good with sight reading because i used to do chorus, from 4th grade until 8th in school, then i did an adult choir last year... but then i learned singing isnt exactly my strong point lol..... thanks :)
@PaulaAbdulRoxxxx6 im 19 years old, have learnt the piano, drumset, bass guitar, harmonica, ukulele, grade 4 vocals and ukulele. the violin is next on the list and the flute after that. i learnt that life is so short that it will end before you actually get chance to realise it. just take every chance you can!
this video helped me soooooo much!!!! this is all i really needed cuz i already know most of the other music stuff becauase i play saxophone. glad there is something that can teach me just the notes :)
hahahah i can play marry had a little lamb after practicing this for 30 min!!! OMG but i had to look for G in 3rd string :P but all is good i tihnk.... self learning is hard but helll i think i'm having fun!!!
wow. thank you!! i know nothing about violin or music. i want to learn and you explain soooooo good!!! i dont know what a b c d etc stuff is or how to even hold the stick thing. thank you :) im trying to learn as much as i can through youtube before i buy a violin and i cant afford a tutor. thank you very much :
Hey Mike, thanks for offering such easy & helpful videos on YouTube. In this video you stated that this is the 2nd video in the series but I'm having trouble locating the 1st video. I subscribed to your channel but it seems as if the videos are in a random order or order of uploading & not in a specific, learning sequence. I went to your website and I'm interested in purchasing your instructional set but I'd like to try my hand at say the first 10 videos in the series first. How can I find them?
So basically if you know guitar you can play any stringed instrument besides violin and cello of course if you know notes, cuz bass is EADG mandolin and violin are GDAE and guitar is EADGBE, so they are not so different at all.
@welovejuniorband im not sure thats the reason his sounds better, how long have you been play that violin, if its not long that might be the reason, i dont play yet but I've heard you have to let the strings stretch over time, and as the stretch it sounds better and better, dont hold me to this though, like I said I dont know but I've heard thats the case...
I've been wanting to know something for a while now - I know most people use fingering tape until they can find the notes without it, but what if you get dependent on it? Isn't it better to try and learn without it? You know, refer to a diagram or something instead.

Yes the violin is a fret less instrument so you have to practice enough to know exactly where your fingers go. I've been playing long enough to also play by ear yes.
@violintutorpro i have good ear by playing guitar and piano:P but still this is hard thing to do... i keep looking for notes :P guess just keep practicing...... mary had a little lamb all over againT_T "Piano nightmare" but u cant just jump over you know so i will take this torture just to learn violin!!!
@SkeletalClown you can get fret tape and that will give you a finger guide, a music store should have the different colored tapes and be able to place it for you.
@spoon149 There is also tools called "Finger Fingers" which you can paste on your fingerboard that show you exactly where your fingers should go in different color schemes. This is certainly very helpful for beginners.
@SkeletalClown yes and no. When I was taught by my professor. You will first use tiny tapes or pencil marks to know where to play. After that you feel it once you learn by ear.

This is a really good video, what does moving your finger back & forth as you play a note do? It sounds different to me.

Strings tend to be cheap, around 5-10 dollars. (idk pounds) but yeah its not at all expensive. And also, his violin is completely out of tune xD

@SkeletalClown some people know and they put like a white thin tape on 4 certain spots on the top. but there are more places to put the finger.

@SkeletalClown it's a lot easier if you've played the guitar before (or any other instrument with frets). that's how i began.
