ITV would have been into a couple of days into their 11 week strike so there only would be the choice of the two BBC Channels, Channel 4 was another 3 years away
I love this stuff! Makes me feel all warm inside. I think it's the combination of the rich BBC voice that inverted snobbery in broadcasting has eliminated, coupled with the soothing sight of an analogue clock. Do we really need BBCs 1& 2 to hand over to News 24? I'd much prefer this anyday. At least Radio 4 still has a proper closedown!
Ah, so these are the Philips recordings we discussed, fantastic quality clip particularly for the age of the tape, I've always found early eighties continuity fascinating so thanks for uploading, I'm quite tempted to get hold of a Philips machine now as I was under the rather wrong impression that the picture quality on the tapes was inherently awful, probably not helped by the N1500 transfers used on the 'Pipkins' Volume 3 DVD, not the best showcasing of early recording formats that disc.
Ash, especially with the speed of the tape running in an N15xx series machine, the quality should be even better than with the N17xx series, although the problem is then that N15xx VCR recordings are more than likely to be older than N17xx VCR-LP recordings. But as with any old tape, if it's been stored well...
Hi i've just checked on the BFI database site and it says that this closedown is from 25 August 1979 judging by the Quatermass film and the Film of the Week: Sleeper from 26 August. Hope this helps!!
