I read Peterson's same account in a book about the air war in Europe a while back and it went into a little more detail. He did what he had to do and it's understandable that he was infuriated by witnessing the 109 pilot murdering helpless airmen. For what it was worth, the Geneva Convention forbid the shooting of pilots in parachutes, since they were no longer effective combatants. Paratroopers, on the other hand, are fair game as they descend, since parachuting is part of their function.
My maternal Grandfather was shot down twice the first time by a Me-109 after a long dogfight and the second time by a late model FW 190 with a aim/lucky one 30mm round. First time pilot waved as he went down in his parachute. Second time, late in the war the pilots lined him up twice, but couldn't do it. . On equal footing first time. Late model FW: very impressed. numerical advantage "saved our bacon" Drove a Mercedes or BMW(family argument) in 90's "This explains everything" (about shot down)
I say good for Bud Petersen. There used to be a code of ethics in battle but that was lost as WWII progressed. Not shooting airmen parachuting from disabled planes was practiced to a much higher degree over Europe and almost not at all in the Pacific theater. Americans and Japanese both took advantage as the war progressed. Even sailors jumping from sinking ships were targets. Rather sad if you think about it.
This guy is awesome and did what any moral Allied airman would do. The nazis should have realized before they started WWII that when you fuck around with America, your whole fucking country is gonna end up like the nazi scumbag in this story -- mincemeat.
@joelSanFrancisco They weren't really fucking around with America at the beginning. Fact, there were many overt Nazi Germans living comfortably in the U.S. What Nazi Germany wanted was Russia, that's where 90% of the ETO was fought.
British Pilots were instructed not to shoot German pilots parachuting over
Britain (Blitz), because they would be captured. They were instructed the German pilots who shot at parachuting British Pilots were within the rules of war, since they were over Britain and thus British pilots could and would be put back into the war effort.
The rules reversed over mainland Europe. Here the Allies were protected by law, not the Germans, thus Bud Petterson was within the law to kill the bastard.
I 've never read an incident, where german pilots shot allied pilots in their parachutes but have several names of german pilots who were shot in their parachutes. War crimes!
@JayvH Is your reading limited to Nazi propaganda?
The Germans shot British pilots during the Blitz, but it was legal over British Territory. They did it sometimes over Europe, but were generally censured when caught at it by the Luft leadership. However shooting Russian pilots was considered such sport that the Russian pilots received instructions on how to pulling silk only at the last second.
@therealbamlee Common???!!!... ME262 were rare to find and most of them were destoyed on the ground. Either give some evidence or be known as a person who spread falsehoods...
@nlpjohn yeah but for those that were found and destroyed in the air it was common for the pilots to be shot in their parashutes. I read in adolf gallands book and in 2 other books about the defense of the reich one was even by a brit :P. there is even one vid on youtube of a p-47 or p-51 guncam where you can see one allied fighter lining up to a german guy in a parashute, must be a miracle that the image switches to antoher plane a second later. its a lie that allied fought a fair war
@nlpjohn oh besides that, killing someone who was superior to you is a common psychological thing. I think it first occured in wwI when tank crews where murdered the minute they left their tanks. the same happened to alot of us bomber crews who were killed by german civilians after they bailed out. the same reason.
@nlpjohn one last thought: if you ever spent a little time researching wwII, you'll have noticed that there is a lot more literature about axis war crimes, although allied crimes occured as well. but you know, after the war you don't care that much about the nation that lost the war ;) i.e. the guys who shot ss personel after they liberated a conzentration camp, no one of them went to jail or anything.
Clive Caldwell said he shot Germans going down over their own lines. He said they had been beaten, but if allowed to escape might learn a lesson and be even more dangerous. It was war. Brutal, horrific war. But NOT men, as with these bomber crews, who were going to be POWs anyway.
Regrettably this sort of thing happened on both sides, it depended on the circumstances. Bomber crews were murdered by civilians in target areas on both sides. Richard Passmore's ( bomber crewman) spent 5 yrs as a PoW. His book "Moving Tent" tells of a journey through a bombed area & the guards held civilians off at gunpoint. A prisoner who came down in the countryside was treated with kindness & the village Pastor was sent to a concentration camp for giving a fellow crewman a Christian burial.
Do any of you listen to what this guy is saying? The 109 pilot was killing bailed out airmen in chutes is forbidden under the laws of War. If Bud would have let the 109 pilot go he would have been up in the air the next day killing more bailed out bomber crews. Bud did the right thing in killing the 109 pilot no matter what you Nazi loving bastards say.
Sorry, son, but U.S pilots were famous for shooting at pilots who bailed out and I haven't heared about Luftwaffe pilots doing the same.Read books and you'll see, mate.
Aliies gave the orders to kill prisoners and parachuting pilots, and that was known to the other side so after a few weeks of allies murdering people then one German pilot retaliates and now the story has changed, I have read too many books that are banned that tell the truth, this guys is a coward, 800 allies vs 7 German pilots what tough guy, It is embarrassing how the British Americans change history, books from all angles Also why can the Allies rape, mass murder genocide slavery its ok
@Raubritter1488 Yup! Your armies in 1939-1945 - conquering countries, building concentration camps, killing prisoners, murdering and terrorizing civilians; your pilots bombing innocent cities & shooting refugees on roads, was much "better" than USA.
Yeah, much better than anybody before and after. :p
Sure,I killed people,I bombed the cities,etc.etc..For fuck's sake,Luftwaffe pilots weren't shooting pilots hanging on a chute,that's what I've been talking about.
@Raubritter1488 We didn't sell half of Europe to the Soviets. We had a political reality to deal with. The Russian army was bigger than the French Army, British Army, and American Army combined. Sure Roosevelt and later Truman could have told Stalin to "get bent" but then they would have risked condemning Europe to another World War. France wasn't about fight the Russians for Eastern Europe, and if I Remember right Britain gave Churchill the Heave Ho in 45. Was America supposed to go it alone?
You're wrong,a Soviet offensive against Western Europe in 1945 would have ended in a slaughter for the Red Army.Roosevelt was a fucking idiot who believed that he was able do deal with Stalin. But Truman was the guy who should be as president circa 1943,he had balls to kick Uncle Joe's nose and make him bleed.
Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Dresden, Lubeck, Pforzheim, Rotterdam, London, Coventry, Warsaw, Stalingrad, Wieluń, Frampol, Lublin itd. itp. This cities were damaged (most of them - completely perished) as result of WWII.
You started this war, you invented hell on earth, so some people gived it back to you.
Nobody before the war wanted to destroy or kill in Europe.
You wanted me to answer your question.
And what YOU will tell me, about thing's I'm writing about?
Peterson's actions should never be second guesed or even questioned. Especially by Germans or in particular by Germans. Any criticism levied, should or could only come from other allied pilots or his unit. Germans have no moral authority to criticize him for their list of murder and mayhem performed by Luftwaffe on the ground and air is much longer than anyone else. Most people just do not know how Germans were using their air force.
There always was more proof than necessary to prove this atrocity. Most "normal" people choose not to familiarize themselves with it and I cannot help that.
I go by what the first victims of Germans reported: Polish civilians and Polish pilots. Totaly traumatised by the Stuka bombing of screaming civilians in Sept.39.
Watch it! I have my foreskin! It is my reporting of facts that you have a problem with and the position you find yourself in: Totaly INDEFENSIBLE.
One does not have to be a Jew to give you a dose of truth. My grandparents were dogeing your grandfather's Death Squads in the eastern Poland so you might bring something more substantial to this table than a language of a 1 st grader!
War crime is a war crime, here we have an example of American war crimes,so don't waste your tine trying to justify that.USAAF started to shoot at german pilots on Autumn 1943 ans a special order was issued for fighter units in January 1944.That's a fact confirmed by American archives.
Well! At least you did not start with a F. Jew coment! It is an improvement!
Now, are you going to start feeling anything for the civilians and soldiers murdered by Luftwaffe by condemming their actions publically or continue to copletelly ignore those facts while pointing to other people's attrocities?
The veterans (non German) that I talked with addmited to me, that they would not have done it again if situation would repeate itself.
No, I never watch Hollywood crap and form an opinion. What I can tell you, is this: My father's sister was about 7 years old when she got straifed and bommbed by a single Henkel 111! At the leasure of the German pilot who decided to attack her and 2 young man runnig behind the farm houses in 1942. They would excuse this attrocity (if successful) as "partisand hunting". Needless to say they missed.
My wife's fammily lived for over 2 years in a f. hole in the ground after
an air raid when their house happened to get a bomb right through it and then burned. To add to this injury, they had a German Shepard dog who was picked up by Panzer driving Germans! Never saw the dog again and have you ever spend a night in a wet hole in a ground in the Central Europe in winter?
Do you know how glad at least Poles were when they finally had a chance to get back at he "super humans" for what they were doing unopposed to their family and friends for years?
There was only 2 ways to end the war: 1, politely ask the Germans to lay down their weapons and 2, make shure they are unable to fly their aircraft. Only Robert S. Johnson precisely said what Allies had to do: "Every time you have a chance, you have to put 4 x 50's up against the tail and the other 4 x 50's in the cocpit and than pull the trigger!" That's how you win wars.
@hetmanbasza Wonderful imagination... "bomb right through it" "Panzer driving Germans" "wet hole in the ground" in where? "Central Europe" Nice imagery, but not really good alliteration "Poles get back at the "super humans" and "doing unopposed to their family for years"... Wow.. With a litte maturity when you grow up you might manage to make it sound truthful, but it will need stylistic improvements. And your "aunt running across the field" Marvelous! keep at it!!
Chuck Yeager admitted that his unit received orders to strafe anything able to move(even children) in their sector.BTW,we're talking about shooting at pilots hanging on a chute, that's something that Americans handled perfectly and according to International Law is a War Crime,a violation of article 20.1 of Geneva Convention.I recommend Marek J. Murawski's books from Kagero Publishing, there you'll see.
American pilots-bunch of cowards and murderers!!!Fuck You!!!
I know that you added "even children" to that order to fit your preconceived idea of Allies being the war criminals that make you feel good while at the same time you are silent as a crematorium in Aushwitz about German attrocities.
Sorry bud, this is not going to fly with us.
Years ago, I concluded, that if the war kept on in Europe for 2 more years, there would be no one speaking German left.
Where was your article 20.1 when my aunt runned across that farm field?
I'm calling US pilots murderers for starting with this shit, read one of my earlier posts:''USAAF started to shoot at german pilots on Autumn 1943 and a special order was issued for fighter units(both from 8th and 15th Air Forces) in January 1944.That's a fact confirmed by American archives''.You don't think that Germans wouldn't answer with the same?I would take no US crew prisioner as retaliation and, being honest,I would shot them on the spot.
I'm talking all the time about fighter pilots and Reich Defence (Reichswerteidigung). In 1943-45,they were defending their homeland against USAAF bombers.BTW,very few of LW pilots were nazis, most of them were simply fighting for their land.I adviced you earlier to read a couple of books 'cause you look like a blindman talking about colours.
I understand how you feel. Completely helpless seeing another 300 to 1000 bombers pummel a major city at day time and a few hundred Brits showing up at night doing the same.
No German, civilian or in uniform, minded when they were on the dishing out side early in the war.
Books have a tendency to carry a slant. Esspecialy written by non-witnesses. Man and women who showed me their scars do not. They have their raw life story and my job is to sift through that.
I just base my statement on books and historical accounts, read for example Heinz Knoke's ''I flew for the Fuhrer'',it's a non-political account of a LW pilot who flew in Reichswerteidigung duties with Jagdgeschwader 1 and 11.He also flew fighter-bomber missions on the Eastern Front.Ended the war with the Knight's Cross and 33 kills, all of them against RAF and USAAF.Reading books,I'm just putting myself into the body of a simple German citizen, soldier or not.
Than work on your etiquete. One liners with such jewels as "F. Jews!!" make you totaly loose all of your credibility.
Citing some decent work on the subject will benefit you. Risk there however is, you will fight their war 60 or more years after it's over. Be carfull with that.
Ever read "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Saier? That's a good one.
I already know Sajer's book.I recommend you the Kagero Publishing books written by Marek J. Murawski and Krzysztof Janowicz. There you'll see the proofs of American ''pilots''(I don't call them pilots, just a bunch of cowards ) war crimes.
If Gabrewski did not see how things were done corectly and followed the British model the USAAF would suffer many more casulties. As luck and common sense had it, he learned from the ones with most experience: Poles who also had per capita the best score card during the Battle of Britain. Chivalry worked only if you could buy your way out of captivity and rode a horse.
If a German dangeled in the parachute over England, he was a POW. If over Germany he was still a deadly
weapon. As they say in Texas "He neede killi'n". Allies were succesful at diminishing German man power to the point of extinction.
What have you read about the Soviets treatment? As a rule, if a German went down behind Soviet line he just dissapeared. Very few escaped. Hartman managed to run away once himself. Why such vennom against Americans and silence about Russians?
Sure,a disarmed man is a threat. So do you think that's correct to shoot a defenceless pilot hanging on a chute?Nice, when US do this it's correct, and when Germans, that's awful.Moralnosc Kalego,koles..And recent researches claim that even the 303 squadron claims were subjected to the very British overclaiming in some 40%.
Here is what determines the moral issue here: IF Petersen started shooting at his German victim in his shoote, than it would be a crime.
Because he witnessed the German commiting the crime you accuse Petersen of and Petersen administered instant justice even though he was enjoying himself making the German get out of his plane, I, and the rest of the world call it JUSTICE. Rightfully so.
Moralnosc Kalego, koles, inaczej tego nie nazwe.Jankesi sa cacy a reszta do dupy, nie???Gratuluje swiatlosci umyslu!!!Nawet nie splune na te jankeskie tchorzliwe KURWY!!!
Write in english so more people have a chance to see what you are about.
Div. 303 had a similar problem but in reverse. British CO. would NOT finish of a German allready in the chanel.
That infuriated the Poles because they knew, that guy would be in a plane in a day or so shooting at them again. If I remember the phrase correctly it stated "You have to shoot him in the water to prevent him from drawning!". Why don't you walk up to those Polish vets from 303 still living
Hey! I was having fun with raubritter! It worked since he took his toys and started cussing me out in polish on my front page! I used that word to yank his chain. I am not offended by it. Are you?
@hetmanbasza Nobody's calling him a liar... but the wonderful rise in emotion like he gave off is a tip off. The "pride" he takes in meting out "justice" to the "evil" German.... Wonderful fable. I doubt that he ever flew a plane, never mind the rest of the "story" .. I wonder how long it took him to make it up..
You do not interview people for any reason do you? I you would transscribed this vid and then just red it it would be a differnent story. Then you might even be right. With a live person even scilence is not scilent!
If you think he's BS all of us than I have no reason to defend him or me. His combat record is easy enought to check and if he's an impostor someone from his unit can easily verify it.
@hetmanbasza As a published author on issued that include atrocities, I have interviewed hundreds of people. As a journalist in Vietnam (2 years) in the late 60's I interviewed many dozens and also learned FIRST HAND the arts and skills of propaganda (American!!). I thinks he's BS. and more importantly, I think your responses with "aunts running across fields and bombs falling through houses and panzer-drivers stealing dogs is all 'storytelling' ! (bad storytelling at that!)
@hetmanbasza Hey, I bet she was doing it in high heeled shoes holding up the front of her long dress as she was fleeing from the church where shehad just practised mass and was tending to the children that the Germans had strafed an hour earilier. Right. Go for it hetman... embellish it more.. "long fair flowing in the wind, her breasts bouncing". Go for it.. nice bullshit really, but needs work.
@hetmanbasza You have a natural gift as a storyteller -- sort of like Hemingway who claimed that he killed 122 Germans during WWII -- Your fine novel material is a rip off of the gunslinger story. Nice imagination, I salute you. Great fiction. However, a few more morbid adjectives or punchier descriptions of German military men as "evil" would spice it up even more. (Do you BELIEVE the guy in the vid? Really? I don't! He probably just peeled potatoes for his unit.?)
Thank you for the complement! I watched this vid. many times. I have paid particular attention to his body language and his eyes. By as far as I may make this claim from my profesional experiance: He is not lying. He enjoyed telling this story. It makes him proud. I have seen verbatum behaviour while the vets (of all sides) were telling me their stories (some a lot more disturbing!). I have even seen it in the eyes of a Sztuthoff survivor as he was telling me his story
@hetmanbasza A Stutthof survivor? Oh well, that's another tall one! Good for you... Now tell us about your people in the (second) Warsaw uprising... Time for another "story".... I KNEW you'd get around to entering the Holocaust into the mix and you DID. Well done.. (I'm 71 and have heard a few in my time... but you really are over the top!)... What do you use to fertilize that wild imagination... You couldn't stick to "truth" to save your life...
In all of your 71 years, did you not learn anything? Is the printed word "the utter truth" only when it comes from you? As you discount everyone's account as "story", "embelishment", "a lie" you quickly diminish any chance for intelectual exchange.
In these few short posts you did not offer any rebutals just insignificant sniping. You do not bring any thing to the table. Add few explitives and you are just as likable as Raubtritter.
walking with Boleslaw through the Stuthoff Platz as he was telling me his experiences. He was a guide.
So you have 2 choices and I am the judge: You are either flower child (sex drugs rock'n roll) or a bancrupt "jurnalist" as 99% of them are today and have been for decades.
@hetmanbasza I'm not looking to be "liked". So, you create fiction and bend truth and tell stories to be "liked", as you're claiming you are looking for "intellectual exchange"? Wow. And "the vets (from all sides) were telling me [you] their stories (some a lot more disturbing)". Another good one that! So you're daliancing in the rose garden and vets line up to speak to you? And that is your approach to seeking intellectual exchange? Grow up first. BOASTFUL MEN TELL LIES! Peterson?
I did not realize how much unintentional milage I can get out of "barbaric Luftwaffe" coment! That's what made you jump in. It is fascinating to me, although it should not be, how you twist and judge a person just because of your preconceived idea (s). Give me the titles of your published work so i may evaluate your mind and then discount all of your reserching experience becasue it really does not matter since it is not yours in the first place. That is your MO. Is it fair?
If it is true that you are 71, statistically, you have under 6 years before one more reality will hit you. The one none of us can avoid and most of us will be humbled. You are not humble. I might be wrong and there is no way for me to learn the truth esspecially form you but I beleve you are on the atheist side of humanity.
That idea just jumpes at me from your comments.
I am a smartass by definition & major irrytant by the grace of God.
@hetmanbasza What kind of an idiot are you? You thought that throwing out remarks like "barbaric Luftwaffe" is going to make others think that you are engaging in "intellectual exchange"? Now you state that my researching experience "is not [mine] in the first place"? What nonsense you come out with!. My "ideas" are NOT preconceived. They rest of developing a research rooted analysis first, not blathering twisted propaganda like "barbaric Luftwaffe".
@Grendo147 Read your own comments. You abused Great Britain for not making peace with Nazi Germany. Right! Could anybody else out there who agrees that this sounds like a pro Nazi comment, please address your answers to Grendo147.
@Grendo147 Your comments appear to say that this is wrong. You appear to be an apologist for the Nazis. If that is not the case, you are still heavily giving that impression. I use the bad evil C word on people who deserve it. I'm working class cockney. I would never stand here making excuses for the nazis. You are. Please stop. What you are saying is far more obscene.
@Grendo147 Ok. Right. Please read your own comments. You have made many which propose that making peace with Nazi Germany was an option worth taking and good. For Britain it would have been win win. Keep our empire and national prosperity and not lose a 750,000 people in a war. We fought on because Nazism was total evil and we recognised the fact.
@Grendo147 Could you please name any defence treaty that Britain has not honoured? I really don't get you. You say you do not favour Nazism, yet criticise the nations that fought it and freed Europe. You are talking shit pal. You are either a neo Nazi trying to cover it up or you are just a stupid troll who hates Britain for no good and real reason. Either way, you are a total dictionary example of a true cunt. Please fuck off and stop annoying me with the balls you spout.
You're right, man,I know that story, there were a lot of German Airmen murdered by those Jewish flying gangsters, fucking cowards!!!They should be hanged!!!BTW,I know a story about how Walter Novotny wanted to shot up an US pilot who was shooting at a german pilot hanging on a chute(Hauptmann Heinz Gutman-Kommando Novotny),but the latter(fortunately,he was not hit) stopped him.
I can understand why Mr. Peterson did what he did. He may have saved his fellow Americans from THAT particular Luftwaffe guy, but in a way he could also have set off a vicious revenge cycle if that German pilot's buddies saw what he was doing to their comrade. Better to have just finished him off with one long burst. Problem solved, and other Luftwaffe pilots would have no excuse to contine the cycle of vengeance.
It's not a football game, it's war. Why should you give the other fella a chance?....so he can come back up tomorrow and come at you from out of the Sun and gun your brains out? Yeah, that's very sporting of you.
Watched this for the second time...I cant blame Bud, and over 40 years later you can tell by the way he tells the story he would do the same thing again today...Hardcore!
Murder. By choosing to do to the Luftwaffe pilot what the German was doing to the US airmen, he degrades himself and lowers himself to the same beastly status as the Nazi. Truly pathetic that even now, seven decades later, he doesn't realize how truly wrong he was. But denial is a coping mechanism...
also p38 pilots were famous in Italy for shooting chutes. this guys speaks the truth but always remember that assholes are everywhere, in every army. nice video
I read many memories of fighter pilots from axis sides-german,hungarian,romanian,who recalling stories by US pilots who shooting in aircrew hanging in parachut, not british or french, but US pilots, because some of them was undisciplined, very good pilots but I think a war bring out from a soldier the dark site.
@eisshertz well if it said british and french or any country did not do this its notr worth the paper it was written on. You now have one first hand account of why this was done from an american who was there. you heard also what the other pilots felt towards him when they found out what he did.
@eisshertz Thats very true and good observation...Everyone has there point, shoot at a guy long enough, put him through war long enough and the most up standing citizen will start commiting some pretty barbaric acts. Everybody has there point, some just reach it sooner than others. Like you I dont believe incidents like this were one sided.
There was a "code of conduct" between fighter pilots...when you are the victor and the other has bailed the aircraft, you "waved" your wings and were happy they bailed..but when you attack a defenseless man in a parachute, the gloves come off...Good for this galant fighter pilot...you do not violate the code, if you do, you just might face the consequences!
if you can prove that no american shoot a chute before that german pilot did i am agreeing with you. War is war my friend try puting urself in their positions. Obviusly its a terrible thing to do to shoot chutes.
@ The Krazydreams... Under the Geneva and Hague Conferences, shooting paratroopers decending is perfectly legal... Shooting aircew bailing from stricken aircaft is not..
@lunchboxer89 Which proves THAT German pilot wasn't able to shoot anyones chute anymore Up intill then the American wasn't killing people in there chute. Why to you think he was amazed at what the german was doing?
maybe that pilot he was refering to to had just lost his family or wife or children or whatever in a allied bombing ride and was looking for vengeance.. what I am trying to say is that somebody has to stop the circle of vengeance to make things better
@TheKrazydreams As a former Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Div..I can tell you full well that I would totally expect to be fired on while under canopy, you would be a fool not to,that's why we jump as low as possible in a combat situation..usually 400'.As for bomber crews,as harsh as it sounds, they are the enemy also.I know it's "gentlemanly" for pilots not to shoot airman under canopy, but there is also a saying..I'ts not advisable to bail out over an area you just bombed"
@TheKrazydreams Bomber crews Tried there best to hit millitary targets Not cillvians Same with paratroopers
If a paratrooper surrenders they still run the risk of being shot however the right thing to do was hold them
Pilots had a unwriten code of respect ask any of then even today Franz stiger 109 pilot escorted a beat up B-17 out of germany because " There was to much blood shed and these brave half dead men just wanted to go home" he met the B-17 pilot 50 years later (Charlie brown)
First off, this pilot was known as "Pete" Peterson by his mates. I knew Pete and others as my Dad was in Pete's squadron in WWII. They were in the 364th. Squadron of the 357th Fighter Group. I knew Pete quite well and no, he was never sorry for this action. He considered and rightfully so that he saved from this young Nazi who had no honor shooting defenseless airmen who's war was over the moment he bailed out.
There's nothing that compares to hearing these stories straight from the men and women who were there, who participated.
War is beyond savage, and I have a hard time understanding how gentlemen like this cope with the memories.
I spent a potion of my life being homeless, and lived in the NYC subway system for a time. I had a few very crazy experiences, so I understand that when stuff happens, we react- violently or otherwise.
The thing is, you've gotta live with whatever happens, afterwards.
both sides commited illegal killings. there is colored footage of ss pow's being machined gunned down next to a pit by afriamercan soldiers oreder by gen bradley. I dont fault this pilot, it was his war and not mine. but a person is very blind if they think america and england didnt commit unspeakable acts to pows. i find it unfair for people who was not there to judge them. they went through something we didnt.
You all fail to realize that this individual has lived with this terrible regret his entire life. It's about an INDIVIDUALS struggle, not all your ideals bs.
@Grendo147 Britain had a long standing defence treaty with Poland. So when Hitler invaded Poland, this effectively was a declaration of war with Britain. And its a good hing we fought WW2 with Germany as the Nazi regime was extremely evil, remember? Now fuck off back to polishing your jackboots you stupid cunt.
@Grendo147 What is that remark about Britain starting the war? Germany invaded Poland you ignorant cunt! You are some bloody little cancerous neo Nazi aren't you.
@Grendo147 The fact was, Germany started WW2. Britain helped win it. It is doubtfull if Germany could have been beaten unless Britain resisted. We did, we won, tough shit. Yeah, we got a bloody nose in France, but we gave one back in the Battle of Britain. Am I proud of my country? Yes. We helped defeat the two most evil regimes in history.
@Grendo147 The BEF was not "Vanquished" they were not captured or destroyed in the field. They escaped to fight another day, as the basis of the army that fought El Alamein. Do you think we shiuld have held up our hands and gone "Fair enough Adolf, you win"? As for the bombing, Germany sowed the wind, and reaped the whirlwind. We had to bomb at night, and you could only hit complete cities at night. The fault for all those deaths in the bomber campaign was Hitler"s.
Well, that German pilot soon discovered how much of a bitch karma can be.

War crimes!
JayvH 6 months ago
@JayvH Is your reading limited to Nazi propaganda?
The Germans shot British pilots during the Blitz, but it was legal over British Territory. They did it sometimes over Europe, but were generally censured when caught at it by the Luft leadership. However shooting Russian pilots was considered such sport that the Russian pilots received instructions on how to pulling silk only at the last second.
holychitlingravy 6 months ago
@JayvH
Well, you have heard it now from an Allied pilot that WAS there.

German pilots who bailed out over Germany were going to come down in Germany, and were going to continue to be enemy combatants.
But enemy bomber crew coming down over Germany were going to be POW's.
Peterson is an honest man to admit he did what he did. I would have done the same in the circumstances.

@therealbamlee apparently.....good for the American pilot ! The German ME109 pilot was gunning down bomber crews as THEY bailed out.
Hunsruck 7 months ago
@therealbamlee Common???!!!... ME262 were rare to find and most of them were destoyed on the ground. Either give some evidence or be known as a person who spread falsehoods...
nlpjohn 6 months ago
@nlpjohn yeah but for those that were found and destroyed in the air it was common for the pilots to be shot in their parashutes. I read in adolf gallands book and in 2 other books about the defense of the reich one was even by a brit :P. there is even one vid on youtube of a p-47 or p-51 guncam where you can see one allied fighter lining up to a german guy in a parashute, must be a miracle that the image switches to antoher plane a second later. its a lie that allied fought a fair war
therealbamlee 6 months ago
@therealbamlee Fair enough...
nlpjohn 6 months ago
@nlpjohn oh besides that, killing someone who was superior to you is a common psychological thing. I think it first occured in wwI when tank crews where murdered the minute they left their tanks. the same happened to alot of us bomber crews who were killed by german civilians after they bailed out. the same reason.
therealbamlee 6 months ago
@nlpjohn one last thought: if you ever spent a little time researching wwII, you'll have noticed that there is a lot more literature about axis war crimes, although allied crimes occured as well. but you know, after the war you don't care that much about the nation that lost the war ;) i.e. the guys who shot ss personel after they liberated a conzentration camp, no one of them went to jail or anything.
therealbamlee 6 months ago
Clive Caldwell said he shot Germans going down over their own lines. He said they had been beaten, but if allowed to escape might learn a lesson and be even more dangerous. It was war. Brutal, horrific war. But NOT men, as with these bomber crews, who were going to be POWs anyway.
mattharcla 7 months ago
Regrettably this sort of thing happened on both sides, it depended on the circumstances. Bomber crews were murdered by civilians in target areas on both sides. Richard Passmore's ( bomber crewman) spent 5 yrs as a PoW. His book "Moving Tent" tells of a journey through a bombed area & the guards held civilians off at gunpoint. A prisoner who came down in the countryside was treated with kindness & the village Pastor was sent to a concentration camp for giving a fellow crewman a Christian burial.
freebeerfordworkers 7 months ago
Allied AND Gremans were shooting for parachuters.
It was very seldom, and pilots almost didn't like it - as dishonorauble.
I can't prove that Germans started to shoot at Americans, I can't prove that Yankees started this procedure, so I can't prove wich side was revenging.
But there were some pilots, on every side of the front, wich sometimes shooting to paras.
I've read this in books wich I was reading in bookshop, I have not them personally.
And the best evidence is that film.

Peterson's actions should never be second guesed or even questioned. Especially by Germans or in particular by Germans. Any criticism levied, should or could only come from other allied pilots or his unit. Germans have no moral authority to criticize him for their list of murder and mayhem performed by Luftwaffe on the ground and air is much longer than anyone else. Most people just do not know how Germans were using their air force.

At the leasure of the German pilot who decided to attack her and 2 young man runnig behind the farm houses in 1942. They would excuse this attrocity (if successful) as "partisand hunting". Needless to say they missed.

Do you know how glad at least Poles were when they finally had a chance to get back at he "super humans" for what they were doing unopposed to their family and friends for years?
hetmanbasza 7 months ago
@hetmanbasza
There was only 2 ways to end the war: 1, politely ask the Germans to lay down their weapons and 2, make shure they are unable to fly their aircraft. Only Robert S. Johnson precisely said what Allies had to do: "Every time you have a chance, you have to put 4 x 50's up against the tail and the other 4 x 50's in the cocpit and than pull the trigger!" That's how you win wars.
hetmanbasza 7 months ago
@hetmanbasza Wonderful imagination... "bomb right through it" "Panzer driving Germans" "wet hole in the ground" in where? Raubritter1488 7 months ago

If Gabrewski did not see how things were done corectly and followed the British model the USAAF would suffer many more casulties. As luck and common sense had it, he learned from the ones with most experience: Poles who also had per capita the best score card during the Battle of Britain.

I am a smartass by definition & major irrytant by the grace of God.
hetmanbasza 7 months ago
@hetmanbasza What kind of an idiot are you? You thought that throwing out remarks like "barbaric Luftwaffe" is going to make others think that you are engaging in "intellectual exchange"? Now you state that my researching experience "is not [mine] in the first place"? What nonsense you come out with!. My "ideas" are NOT preconceived. They rest of developing a research rooted analysis first, not blathering twisted propaganda like "barbaric Luftwaffe".

You loosing it man! Your mind that is. Not the argument because there was none.
I am not interested in trading insults in general. For all of your experience and "wisdom" you think you have and fail to recognise it, that's sad.

@Grendo147 Read your own comments. You abused Great Britain for not making peace with Nazi Germany. Right! Could anybody else out there who agrees that this sounds like a pro Nazi comment, please address your answers to Grendo147.
SvenTviking 8 months ago
@Grendo147 Your comments appear to say that this is wrong. You appear to be an apologist for the Nazis. If that is not the case, you are still heavily giving that impression. I use the bad evil C word on people who deserve it. I'm working class cockney. I would never stand here making excuses for the nazis. You are. Please stop. What you are saying is far more obscene.
SvenTviking 8 months ago
@Grendo147 Ok. Right. Please read your own comments. You have made many which propose that making peace with Nazi Germany was an option worth taking and good. For Britain it would have been win win. Keep our empire and national prosperity and not lose a 750,000 people in a war. We fought on because Nazism was total evil and we recognised the fact.
SvenTviking 8 months ago
@Grendo147 Could you please name any defence treaty that Britain has not honoured? I really don't get you. You say you do not favour Nazism, yet criticise the nations that fought it and freed Europe. You are talking shit pal. You are either a neo Nazi trying to cover it up or you are just a stupid troll who hates Britain for no good and real reason. Either way, you are a total dictionary example of a true cunt. Please fuck off and stop annoying me with the balls you spout.

@megatwingo
Raubritter1488 9 months ago
I can understand why Mr. Peterson did what he did. He may have saved his fellow Americans from THAT particular Luftwaffe guy, but in a way he could also have set off a vicious revenge cycle if that German pilot's buddies saw what he was doing to their comrade. Better to have just finished him off with one long burst. Problem solved, and other Luftwaffe pilots would have no excuse to contine the cycle of vengeance.

If he is telling the truth about this german pilot, and I tend to believe him, I might would have done the same thing...I hate war

I read many memories of fighter pilots from axis sides-german,hungarian,romanian,who recalling stories by US pilots who shooting in aircrew hanging in parachut, not british or french, but US pilots, because some of them was undisciplined, very good pilots but I think a war bring out from a soldier the dark site.
eisshertz 10 months ago
@eisshertz well if it said british and french or any country did not do this its notr worth the paper it was written on. You now have one first hand account of why this was done from an american who was there. you heard also what the other pilots felt towards him when they found out what he did.
the first victim of war is the truth
mustangsthree 10 months ago
@eisshertz Thats very true and good observation...Everyone has there point, shoot at a guy long enough, put him through war long enough and the most up standing citizen will start commiting some pretty barbaric acts. Everybody has there point, some just reach it sooner than others. Like you I dont believe incidents like this were one sided.
jbyrd0861 9 months ago
quit bringing these pointless arguments that have nothing to do with the video, ffs
artouxcp 10 months ago
There was a "code of conduct" between fighter pilots...when you are the victor and the other has bailed the aircraft, you "waved" your wings and were happy they bailed..but when you attack a defenseless man in a parachute, the gloves come off...Good for this galant fighter pilot...you do not violate the code, if you do, you just might face the consequences!

skye1212 10 months ago
it's not the question if youre a german or a us pilot, it's a question of the individual level of charakter to shoot at parachutes.
After talking to german pilots in the 70th I had rather the opinion that this was a "no-go", and I assume that this was the same in the USAF.
tritop 10 months ago
This guy is a liar! If you guys belive this shit, you belive everything!
The americans shooted the pilots on the parachute, not the germans!

if you can prove that no american shoot a chute before that german pilot did i am agreeing with you. War is war my friend try puting urself in their positions. Obviusly its a terrible thing to do to shoot chutes.
lunchboxer89 11 months ago
Respect, if someone can talk about cruel things he did during the war. Sometimes you have to talk about it for living on.
Ask yourself what you would have said in front of a camera if you decided to talk about shooting on helpless ...

@ The Krazydreams... Under the Geneva and Hague Conferences, shooting paratroopers decending is perfectly legal... Shooting aircew bailing from stricken aircaft is not..
SSGDragonSoldier 1 year ago
Which proves you are not any better than the german pilot..........
lunchboxer89 1 year ago
@lunchboxer89 Which proves THAT German pilot wasn't able to shoot anyones chute anymore Up intill then the American wasn't killing people in there chute. Why to you think he was amazed at what the german was doing?
freakyflow 11 months ago
maybe that pilot he was refering to to had just lost his family or wife or children or whatever in a allied bombing ride and was looking for vengeance.. what I am trying to say is that somebody has to stop the circle of vengeance to make things better
therealbamlee 1 year ago
in my oppinion its not wrong to pick off paratroopers because they trying to land and kill you people so you must kill them first
but shooting a bomber crew that just ejected is wrong but then again they had the same intent of killing your people
TheKrazydreams 1 year ago
@TheKrazydreams As a former Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Div..I can tell you full well that I would totally expect to be fired on while under canopy, you would be a fool not to,that's why we jump as low as possible in a combat situation..usually 400'.As for bomber crews,as harsh as it sounds, they are the enemy also.I know it's "gentlemanly" for pilots not to shoot airman under canopy, but there is also a saying..I'ts not advisable to bail out over an area you just bombed"
stabbification 1 year ago
@TheKrazydreams Bomber crews Tried there best to hit millitary targets Not cillvians Same with paratroopers
If a paratrooper surrenders they still run the risk of being shot however the right thing to do was hold them
Pilots had a unwriten code of respect ask any of then even today Franz stiger 109 pilot escorted a beat up B-17 out of germany because " There was to much blood shed and these brave half dead men just wanted to go home" he met the B-17 pilot 50 years later (Charlie brown)
freakyflow 11 months ago
First off, this pilot was known as "Pete" Peterson by his mates. I knew Pete and others as my Dad was in Pete's squadron in WWII. They were in the 364th. Squadron of the 357th Fighter Group. I knew Pete quite well and no, he was never sorry for this action. He considered and rightfully so that he saved from this young Nazi who had no honor shooting defenseless airmen who's war was over the moment he bailed out.
pilotdon50 1 year ago

SvenTviking 1 year ago
@Grendo147 What is that remark about Britain starting the war? Germany invaded Poland you ignorant cunt! You are some bloody little cancerous neo Nazi aren't you.
SvenTviking 1 year ago
@Grendo147 The fact was, Germany started WW2. Britain helped win it. It is doubtfull if Germany could have been beaten unless Britain resisted. We did, we won, tough shit. Yeah, we got a bloody nose in France, but we gave one back in the Battle of Britain. Am I proud of my country? Yes. We helped defeat the two most evil regimes in history.
SvenTviking 1 year ago
@Grendo147 The BEF was not "Vanquished" they were not captured or destroyed in the field. They escaped to fight another day, as the basis of the army that fought El Alamein. Do you think we shiuld have held up our hands and gone "Fair enough Adolf, you win"? As for the bombing, Germany sowed the wind, and reaped the whirlwind. We had to bomb at night, and you could only hit complete cities at night. The fault for all those deaths in the bomber campaign was Hitler"s.
