Roy Jay was a brilliant act, I worked in the same places as him in Benidorm and you couldn't met a lovelier man, funny and a bit eccentric, and what a singing voice too!
My first love!! I was 19 and he was 20 when we got married. Marriage failed, but our friendship and romance lasted for many years. He found the convict pyjamas in a bedding shop at Piccadilly Station in Manchester, walking there having just been released from Strangeways prison. Irony of them amused him. Lost touch over 20 years ago. So many memories, just sad he is no longer around. Does anyone know how he died?
I saw him live at Irvine in Scotland when he supported the Three Degrees. He was a unique talent and will always be remembered. The world is a little bit darker by losing him.Peace, Roy.
When I saw this comedian he was introduced as Roy Kinell Jay. He worked in clubs owned by Dougie Flood around Manchester. His introduction refers to a short tale he used to tell about what Harold said at the battle of Hastings when the arrow hit him in the eye. (Kinell) I saw him a few times, a great natural comedian but never heard of him again. Sad.
Didn't he make his breakthrough by winning a talent contest on T.V? I'm sure I remember him hitting the country with a bang..because just as he said..everyone WAS doing it the next day.
I Met Roy in Benidorm a few years ago I bought his old guitar from him he said he had owned it for Donkys years, and that he had used it to write many songs. He sighned and dated it for me.with a marker pen with the name Slyther.
I know Roy had his problems but in my opinion he was a great guy who will be sadley missed by many many people. Rest in peace Roy ---Slyther.
Yes i knew Roy well, in fact i drove him to London
to do a screen test for the advert with the palm trees and the camel, he thought he would be going somewhere exotic, but it was all filmed at the London studios!!.He was a nice bloke, a bit over the top when he'd been drinking!!.
bahaha...ive been looking for this dude for ages...none of my friends knew who i was going on about they all said i was making him up...hell..i started thinking i had made him up...spook....
I remember Roy appearing as a guest on numerous UK prime time TV shows in the early 80s and I thought he was hilarious. In hindsight, I suppose his act, featuring crazy mannerisms as seen here, was always going to have a limited life span before people no longer found it funny. Very sad that he died long before his time.
This seems to be one of very few traceable video clips of him on the internet. If anyone knows of any more, I'd be interested.
As I remember the gag went something like: you know that time of night when you reach out for that small packet!! I was the only man in london wearing an after eight mint, Fantastic please please somebody post some of his act.
At last!! When I tell folks that my favourite comedian was Roy Jay, They say. Who? Funny though, if there is ever a Roy Jay revival, these same folks will be saying that they loved him as a kid, and did slither and spook impressions e.t.c e.t.c
People, forgive me my English and I'm from Uruguay 30 years, my name is Fernando Medina, Roy and I met when I lived in Benidorm in 2006-2007 and I have great memories of a very good person
Roy Thanks for being a good friend with me and my family, thank you for your voice and your big heart.
I was upset to hear of Roys death. I was his roadie in the early 80's. He was the funniest man ever when he was sober but it was difficult trying to keep him that way. A true wasted talent with a heart of gold.
Many a school playtime was spent by me and my mates arsing about saying "Spook!" and "slither!" to each other. I'd love to see one of his routines again. What a guy!
Great stuff! This appears to be the only footage on the net of Roy Jay, the "Spook! Slither!" comedian who was huge for a year or so in the 80s then vanished completely.
Came from Uffculme in Devon I believe!

I remember my dad and I howling at this guy - he was so brilliantly odd for primetime.
He did a gag about putting a condom on in the dark and ending up wearing an after eight mint!! Genius. RIP.

Are there any clips of his "Spook!" act that could be uploaded onto Youtube? I'd love to see them again.
Muskadash 3 years ago 3
He held a Norwegian passport. He lived briefly in Royston near Barnsley back in the late 90's.
Did a fine version of the song 'Georgia on my mind'. Liked a drink though. Tried to get things going here again, but he disappeared back to Spain.

If my memory serves he also did Rowntrees Fruit Pastilles ads during his brief moment in the sun. An unique performer.
Cheers.
