I guess they are modern but are good. shades of lots of things, incredible string band , trees pentangle, etc, plus the communal ethos and visuals like quintessence and principal edwards magic theatre.
The harmony reminds me a lot of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. They actually use the same chords I think. Probably one could listen to them simultaneously and they would form a duo.
Gargantuan---Check some of the late 60s-early 70s bands that influenced Espers:Fairport Convention (early stuff w/ Sandy Denny & Richard Thompson), Steeleye Span, Incredible String Band, Pentangle, Mellow Candle, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Fotheringay, first few Byrds albs, Richard/Mimi Farina, 1st King Crimson alb, Evensong, Hunter Muskett......You'll find a lot of rich stuff from that era. More recently, Fleet Foxes are drinking from the same well & doing some beautiful music.
I'm trying to find similar bands, but I'm unable to dig up anything I like in the same way that I like this. Does anyone have any suggestions at something that is similarly melodic and multi-layered?
Greg Weeks solo stuff is pretty vital if you like the Espers albums. I'd also recommend the likes of Six Organs Of Admittance or Voice Of The Seven Woods for the more experimental side. Or if you want to keep it more folky and gently psyche, things like Fern Knight, Feathers, Meg Baird, Orion Rigel Domisse...
I've checked out six organs & fern knight. I like them, but don't satisfy as much as the layered melodies in Espers' songs. A perfect example of what I mean is Dead King, where I can hear 2 guitar parts, a synth part, violin and some sort of woodwind, and they still all manage to texture the music beautifully instead of just making noise. Basically the harmonies are awesome!
@gargantuandick You should check out Brightblack Morninglight. One of my favorites. Very mellow. And they use a Rhodes. It's music you could die to, or love to, or paint to, or kill to, or sleep to. It'll take you deep.
You guys should really check out Andrew Douglas Rothbard as well if you like multilayered melodic stuff. Some of it can get pretty intense but it's all amazing, especially the first album.
@gargantuandick Not all that similar at all, but if you have never heard them try First Utterance by Comus, and it is hauntingly beautiful. Especially the track The Herald.
@hannahbufton I love that band Incredible String Band, Quintessence, Jan Dukes De Grey, Spirogrya, Forest, Trees, and some Donovan are all amazing too. Not so similar, but I don't see how anyone can like this, and not like King Crimson's first 4 albums.

The closest you will get is "acid folk" bands of the late sixties and early seventies. Comus and Trees are a definite influence on Espers...

Check out the record "First Utterance" by "Comus."
Also check out the band "Faun Fables." The albums "Mother Twilight" and "Family Album." are my favorite from them.
You really need the entire albums of these bands.
An I-tunes 30 second demonstration won't do. lol
Hope you like um
