Etta was mad, because it's her song, and she felt that if anyone should sing 'At Last' for the president, it should be her. And I totally agree with her. She was the original singer, and she deserves it. I do think that Beyonce did a good cover, but no one can compare to Etta. Beyonce should have chosen a different song.

Sure Aguilera has amazing vocal abilities, as well as Beyonce, but Christina has the habit of screaming and adding compassion and anger into a sweet song, her rugged shifting through the notes takes me away from this song, Beyonce did it like it was meant to be.
oh and another thing, I also love Christina, but she really carried away when she sang this song and It's not as beautiful as the way Beyonce sang it!

Do you seriously think Beyonce said "I want to sing this for Obama" and it just happened. Beyonce didn't control the process, Beyonce never stopped Etta from singing this. At the end of the day, this song would not have been relevant at that time if it wasn't for Beyonce's portrayal of Etta in Cadillac Records. It's the way it is. Beyonce has SO MUCH respect for Etta James.

Or should I say without the film Cadillac records. I am not denying that the song is a classic, but of all the songs they could have chosen, why would it be At Last? Beyonce has a wonderful voice. But she slurred some words and strung out a few.
Etta was crisp and soft at times and showed more I felt honest emotions. I'ts like,
I felt she actually had gone thru this emotional experience and not just cut a record.

I love Christina Aguilera, but Beyoncé OWNED this song! I'm not saying that because I prefer Beyoncé, but because she respects the songs she learns. If she had sang it as Christina did, which is with trillions of unnecessary runs, people would have criticized her for over singing. But when Miss Aguilera does it, she is praised. Beyoncé knows when to put runs and not when not to, which Christina Aguilera doesn't. I can't imagine her singing All I Do Was Cry or as soulful as Beyoncé did, sorry...

Beyonce had to respect E.James version because it wsa a tribute to her, while Christina did the cover of the song in her concert, wich mean she had the freedom to sing the song the she wanted. If she was doing a tribute to the original singer, she would have sing it more like Beyonce, without all the groal and high note, but she wasnt. I don't understand why you always compare these two version, same song/different context...
