this piece is absolutely GREAT!!! it has this old japanese video game kinda vibe to it which I absolutely love, brings back childhood memories... everything here is top notch and heart squeezing - melody, incredible harmony, bass riffs, sax, funky fusion guitar playing, Dave's drums and of course Chick's synth improvisations - gotta love this song
good god and this is live...it sounds like a cd. it's amazing, unbelievable. i love every single one of these guys. gambale you're a monster, patitucci a beast of a bass player. all of them!
Innovation + technical brilliance = superior music. Contrast this level of composition with today's standards in popular music: man o man, it makes me wonder what the next era of decomposition will bring. But hey, we had our hay day, and its preserved for posterity. And hopefully, someone will be inspired to take up the banner of Return To Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Elektric Band, etc. and take it to the next level of good taste, technical brilliance and innovation.
@MonsterJazzLicks...the chords in the intro were played by frank gambale on his guitar using some sort of effects. watch it again and you can see him doing it.
I love how these guys are supporting each other. Nobody gets in nobody's way. Well, espeically nobody gets in Chick's way. And I love the way Gemballe does some simple guitar comping, I mean, he is such a great guitar player and yet he doesn't mind to do simple Strat-like twacks. Fantastic team!
I saw these guys at Memphis State Univ in 1991...I ranged from standing in my chair yelling to sitting there dumbfounded but these guys talent...Patitucci's bass playing made me want to practice and sell my bass at the same time, as I will never be anywhere near his skill...but they were awesome!
Shouldn't it say 'Elektric' Band? One of my 99 favorite tunes. Saw them live on their title album tour. (Chick is an alien, I think). Have you ever tried playing those mini keys and making it sound musical? Amazing.
Man, to me, any piece on which Chick plays the KX5 is wonderful! To me, that's like ultimate in keyboard playing, aside from what Hiromi does with the piano and the Nord Lead, of course.

holy crap this sucks, that whole Beneath The Mask album sucked, real bad, probably the worst one they did, cheese for jazz FM or whatever it might be.
Funky and smooth, J.P.s bass work is awesome here as well, he sits in so well in the pocket, and he leaves the open spaces for the other players to shine in.
That's what a pro does!
He gives that damn yamaha J.P. signature a hell of workout though, right?
The KX5 is a fantastic instrument, especially in Chick's hands. To me, nothing touches the KX5 as far as portable keyboards go. I prefer it in black color, though.
I think everything is a trend to the degree that as time and music both progress, so too the heightened awareness and the imminent need and desire for change which concurrently builds upon the former.
The progression of music itself reduces all bygone influence to that of a "trendy nature" I think -- a trend being nothing more than a passing of fancy of course.
Albeit trends of their own accord do seem to scratch the itch with more profound nuances, cliches & niches attached to them.
You are entitled to your opinion. Sadly, you posses neither the depth nor intellect to fully appreciate the magnitude of musicianship displayed here. Run along....Coldplay is calling....
I said nothing that underestimated the musicianship displayed by these world class musicians. Musicianship is always there. They are truly virtuosos, but, as the 80s infected all music, they tended to make it a lot more cheesy and with "astral" sound effects that are way too ridiculous. I personally prefer his akoustic band, or the latest elektric band CD, "To The Stars". Now there you have musicianship AND good taste in both musicality and use of electronics.
Everything you said has credence only to the degree that it is one man's perception; therefore in that light is your comment to be respected, but never taken beyond the single-sightedness of its efficacy.
"Cheesy" is in the perception of the beholder, and if it weren't then my statements and opinions would be in agreement with yours, but alas I love the sound.
Those who created the sound know a little more than you or I about creativity and therein lies the differentiating factor.
You are absolutely correct. But as you said, it is all about perception. Now, I may perceive 80s influence in Chick's music as "cheesy" or "industrial", and it is exactly what I wanted to point out. It's my point of view, not to be accepted as an invariable truth, since nothing in music is exempt from personal opinion. What you can say objectively is that Chick's virtuosity as well as all the other musicians' is present, since this is not commercial or pop music. It's just another trend.

Ackerlaw: unfortunately, the only commercially recorded live performances on DVD that I know of are the following: "Live in Madrid" (1986 and very rare today), "Live at the Maintenance Shop" (recorded 1986 but released only in 2004) and the band's reunion featured in "Live at Montreux" (2004). I don't know of any similar DVD of the "Beneath the Mask" tour from where the above clip of "99 flavors" is taken. But let's hope there are more videos from more fans...!

@Whit3n3lack Thank G-D we have all sorts of people in the world, otherwise we'd all talk like Dr.Dre or Justin Beiber, though I haven't actually seen them,I realize that their are those who like them. How would we appreciate a good smelling rose if there were not people who give off the stench of sewer from their brain?

@vithaj92
My facility with an instrument (or anyone's for that matter) is irrelevant.
This music sounds like Japanimation.

These guys were just the SICK3ST. I'm going straight to Chick's site and see if this is commercially and immediately available on DVD.
