I just need to know the first 20. My teacher said that is all you will need to know at my school. I don't understand why we only need to the know 20, why not all, or none at all?
PeaceLvr34, try this... (even though it's really stupid) Harry Herman liked being big, cause no other forest near national mount goon allowed sick puny sasquatches. Clearly arbitrary, this caused scads of tiny vermin to cry. (sorry, I think that's more than 20)
This is too long to learn. Well I have another shorter version of it but it's Hindi though. But it has helped me so I have no use of this one' . So for me it's long, boring & useless.
Do this then go to the Sporcle website and test yourself... test yourself until you can finish the test... then test yourself until you don't need all those tips... then test yourself until you can finsih it within a certain time... Once you see you can teach yourself this you can teach yourself anything... including languages... the difficulty in many things is knowing the language... including the language of chemistry... all these so called teachers are idiots... good job man...
Ive memorized the whole periodic table from hydrogen to the unun-whateveriums(depending on what table you are using) ive memorized it horizontaly... it too me a whle but i finally got it. It is honestly not that hard and i only did it as a bet against a friend, i won. my technique was, for example. Saying hydrogen with my eyes closed, looking to see helium, then saying hydrogen, helium, the looking to see lithium and saying the first 3 and so on... I started again at each line. next up is pi!
Why do you have to memorize the periodic table??? Is it required by your school?
In the US I can't think of a single university or other institutions that require
memorizing tha periodic table. Yes you have to know all the elements, the properties of the main groups, the atomic masses etc, but memorizing it like that seems really pointless. In my oppinion there are much more important things that need to be memorized than the periodic table.
Wow, I'm in New York and we had to memorize all the symbols (1990s) but not the atomic numbers! I could never remember the stupid rare earths - so I programmed them into my TI-85 to sekretly cheat during the test, w00t! Really, I was only cheating myself because to this day I can never remember the difference between praseodymium/promethium and thulium/thallium.
What kind of lame-ass class makes you memorize the periodic table? It is the most ubiquitous scientific chart in human history. I know most of it because i use it often, but the only reason i can think of memorizing it was if you were in some sci-fi story where i was trying to smuggle the scientific knowledge of the ancients into some land that forbids all learning not in the holy book.
Tell your professor that another teacher says he is a naughty little clown.
i dont think it's as much the teacher's fault as it is the curriculum's fault. you're supposed to learn all kinds of crap you never need again. one of the most hilarious things is having to have a nice scientific calculator to use in regular class, but having to calculate everything with pen and paper in exams.
...or, having to memorize exact temperatures, pressures and minutes it takes for sterilization of something, and then only needing to press a button on the machine. :P
@bionerd23 I so agree. Whe had to buy TI Nspire with that fancy touchpad for 100 euros, but we arent even allowed to use it during normal tests!!!! That makes completely no sense...
@bionerd23 In my chemistry class, we only have to memorize the most commonly used elements. Not the obscure elements such as reuthenium and technicium and all those elements you never use.
Besides, we're allowed to use reference tables, so it makes no sense to waste time memorizing the periodic table, there are more exciting things to do.
no seriously, if you work in nuclear medicine, it's the most common element you'll have in your hands every day when working - even more so than the elements your lunch fork are made of!
but still, memorizing it is rather weird indeed... oh well.
hey, i gotta admit i like knowing it, though. but... i guess people who learn Pi to 150+ digits just for fun are worse, still... :P
@bionerd23 I learned pi too 20 decimal place then thought what was the point. unless you want to do a seriously accurate equation in you head i don't think you need it. Plus it would take to long to do the extremely simple equation of finding the area of a circle using A=3.14159265358979323846rr The rr isnt a mistake just cant be bothered to put in squared. I also have learnt the periodic table in 2 hours including all the Relative Atomic Masses, the Symbols (easy as hell) and the Atomic numbers
@bionerd23 Well, i am all in favor of students knowing how the operations in their calculator are performed and being able to do mental math because that helps them handle equations their calculator doesn't, but having to do science problems without using a calculator is just stupid. You can't make the problems interesting or difficult in the right way because students are wasting their time and attention on arduous multiplication and division problems.
Funnily enough, if you're an undergraduate chemistry student at Oxford University, it's a basic assumption that you know the elements of the periodic table, in order, seeing as one isn't provided in the exam.
@ohwell186 Lame-ass is as Lame-ass does. (paraphrasing forest gump) It is not unreasonable to expect students to know 10-20 common elements. But memorizing the whole table is utterly useless. You might as well memorize the birthdays of the royal family of Malta. If you need it, look it up. There is NO scientists in the world that does not have aperiodic table handy. I say this as aperson that memorized way more elements than my class mates and can tell you a use and story about almost every one.
@michalchik well i have a pervert teacher and we can't tell if " it" is a woman or man..."it" goes by chipered reen...we have to memorise the whole table in one week...:(
@azsxdcfvgbhnjmk128 Good luck. You might want to point out to your teacher that a better use of your time would be learning how to use the periodic table quickly and effectively and memorizing those elements that you use the most by working problems with them. I say this as a successful science teacher.
@moonrockguy Thank you, glad to hear it. I am not against memorizing some things like the basic multiplication tables, the parts of an atom, but more is not always better. You grind people down and make them hate science and math when you heap lots of tedious work on them . If kids are not enjoying science while they are learning it, you are guaranteeing they won't grow up to be scientists or even think in scientific terms.
@SevFTW That a lot, probably more than necessary but that is still not as muts as all of the, I would gues that around 30 would be fine for most chem students.
@michalchik Hi. Memorizing periodic table is pretty stupid idea, I agree. But... As chemistry student and later teacher of chemistry I found it is very practical to know from where certain element come. If you want to explain chemistry bound, you must know how many electrons are on external orbitals and if you have memorized elements of main groups of periodic table, you can understand what is going on in chemistry bond, much easier and faster. So it is not totally useless. Cheers!
As funny as this memorization technique is, I do see one problem with it. When you match carbon with "concrete," you may confuse cobalt with "concrete," since both begin with "co." Other than that, great job.
hmm, well i'd know Co doesnt belong in the main group elements, but yeah, if you dont know that... quite a bit of an issue. i found it hard to remember which words were fill words at first, though, and struggled with that a bit.
This is really funny, but I won't be able to remember it at all. And unfortunately just knowing the symbol wont help me know the element. More power to ya if it helps though.
well, at least it's loosely connected... and i found e.g. "somebody bit off someones secret telephone pole" pretty funny, so that was one of the first bits i remembered.
