Koivu would have been a big help by being a cheap experienced veteran for a few years, a leader and an model for the young players. The fact that he had been the captain for many years is a big plus too.
The new team is gonna cost us like 20mill more on our cap for 3 years and 13 for 6 years. The old team would have cost us like 5 to 10 for like 3 years so a decent amount of cap space to develop a future.
You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure this out.

The point is that signing Koivu should have been the obvious of choices if he wanted to stay. It was for the best of the franchise. We are now further from the cup than we were this summer since we are overpaying many players with none of them being the impact player we were desperately looking for.
Look at Toronto. They were in the same spot as us but declined to sign Cammalleri for the same price we pay and went for young players and a core. It will pay off better for them than for us.

Koivu would not have been useful due to his skill, but due to his leadership as the captain of the Habs for over 10 years. Overpaying multiple veterans will do us no good, especially this summer and the upcoming one when we will have to get rid of players like Hamrlik to free us so cap space JUST TO KEEP players like Plekanec.
Meanwhile, Toronto got really talented prospects about to make the big jump in the NHL and they will free lots of cap space this summer. They will surpass us soon.

I think you overestimate the Leafs future though. Their farm is NOT strong by any stretch, and until they actually get players signed, having all the cap space in the world doesn't mean anything.
As for Montreal, again, I agree they're in a terrible spot, but arguably I think they would want to trade a player like Hamrlik or Spacek to open up a spot for Subban come next year anyway, so if they can pull that off and free up the space to resign Plekanec while doing so, it's win/win.

I seriously doubt Gainey was the main reason behind Koivu's departure. I'm not only saying the Gomez trade was awful, i'm implying that if Koivu really wanted to stay in Montreal, he could have signed for much less to finish his career here and even a GM as bad as Gainey would have signed him over Gomez because we all know we are not gonna win a cup with a bunch of overpaid free agency signings.

Koivu would have been a big help by being a cheap experienced veteran for a few years, a leader and an model for the young players. The fact that he had been the captain for many years is a big plus too.
The new team is gonna cost us like 20mill more on our cap for 3 years and 13 for 6 years. The old team would have cost us like 5 to 10 for like 3 years so a decent amount of cap space to develop a future.
You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure this out.

The point is that signing Koivu should have been the obvious of choices if he wanted to stay. It was for the best of the franchise. We are now further from the cup than we were this summer since we are overpaying many players with none of them being the impact player we were desperately looking for.
Look at Toronto. They were in the same spot as us but declined to sign Cammalleri for the same price we pay and went for young players and a core. It will pay off better for them than for us.

Koivu would not have been useful due to his skill, but due to his leadership as the captain of the Habs for over 10 years. Overpaying multiple veterans will do us no good, especially this summer and the upcoming one when we will have to get rid of players like Hamrlik to free us so cap space JUST TO KEEP players like Plekanec.
Meanwhile, Toronto got really talented prospects about to make the big jump in the NHL and they will free lots of cap space this summer. They will surpass us soon.

I agree the Gomez trade was terrible. I really don't know what Montreal will do this offseason. No wonder Gainey quit while he did, he probably realized what a clusterf*ck he had wrought by having over 40 million tied up in a dozen or so players.
I think you overestimate the Leafs future though. Their farm is NOT strong by any stretch, and until they actually get players signed, having all the cap space in the world doesn't mean anything.
