TRUE Harry Caray story. In 1997 he got in the habit of figuring out how a player's last name would be pronounced if it were spelled backwards. At an Expos game, Mark Grudzielanek comes up to bat...so Harry says, "You know, if Grudzielanek spelled his name backwards (then a few seconds of silence).....I wouldn't be at all surprised.." Then he went on to call play by play.
I love the way he used to point out people in the crowd and be like "There's Fred and Deloris Yates. They're up here all the way from Russellville, Kentucky, celebrating their 32nd wedding anniversary. Fred is a shift manager at Logan Aluminum and Deloris is the junior English teacher at Logan County High School... Go Cougars!" or something like that... When I was a kid, I didn't understand that people were telling him these things about the people he was talking about...
Harry was the best! I grew up in S. Georgia, so we had the Braves on TBS. Our cable provider started carrying WGN, and we were hooked immediately! Loved to hear him gush about Ryne Sandberd and Jody Davis!!
@Caveboy Ummm, feel free to tell your dad that actually Harry was with the Cardinals from the 1940s until 1969, I believe. So there. Actually, he was an excellent announcer in his early years - descriptive, right on the money with his calls. Only in his later years on WGN did he begin to be perceived as buffoonish.
That is soooo perfect...but it was part of Harry's success, I think. Like just going to the ballpark with your uncle, who'd fill in all the gaps where nothing much was going on on the field. Just havin' a Bud, yammering on about everything under the sun, watching baseball. You could do worse. And don't forget, the Cubs lost all the time for most of his years, so he had to make some kind of experience out of it, something worthwhile to stay three hours for.
It's not about who does the better impression, it's about who has the better material. You can be dead on but if it's not funny then who cares? It could just be remotely close to the actual voice but if it's funny then it works.
Good point. I always thought that the guy from Mad Tv has an almost completely dead on impression of Bush; the best around. But Ferrel, who still does a fairly accurate impression, has much better material.
do a search on jim shorts harry etc. in youtube - kevin matthews used to use Volkman a lot on the radio. Volkman truly is the best. Will Ferrel's seems to be more of a caricature - while campanera's is trying to be accurate. But volkman is the still the best
This guy blows A**, come to Chicago and try making fun of Harry Carey you will get your A** kicked. John Caponera is the worst comedian ever F****** Moran
best Harry Caray impersonator around!

I once heard him say during a Cubs game at Wrigley on a sweltering, humid night, "What a great night to drink beer!!!"

Not even close. The best Harry impersonation, by far is Jim Volkman's.

For another shot at the impression, search Harry Caray on Terry Mulholland. Cubs Win! Cubs Win!! I gave it my best :)

True Cub fans could never accept an announcer who cut his teeth with the Cardinals, and made his name with the White Sox.
Did you bandwagon cub fans even know that?
Ronny Santo, and Pat Hughes forever.

Will Ferrell kicks this guys butt. He gets the "Heeyyyy!" down, but everything else sucks.
switchhitter07 3 years ago
Will Ferrell's impersonation blows goats. Campanera's is now just a weak, watered-down version of Ferrell's.
Jim Volkman did a better Harry than Harry did himself. It's a damn shame that there's not endless audio clips of him on youtube.

As a kid I gre up listening to Harry and Jack Buck as the Cardinals went to 3 World Series in 5 years. Too bad the magic didn't rub off on the Cubs.
Campanera's best is the bit about Davey Concepcion losing a pop-up in the sun.
