@Jamesivob I have a great evolution to this video and it is a must see; "Sledge Hammer Golf; shawn clement" is the title and you will FEEL exactly what it is you need to do in the complete swing; when you are able to hit balls with this drill, you are on your way! Shawn
I really like this video, do you think you will ever do what Sean Foley did, move from Canada to Florida and work with the pros? I think you are better then him, no bs.
Shawn you are the man !!!!!!!!!!!!! have both your videos great stuff !!!!!!!!!!! the golf channel sucks for not giving you the next great instructor show!!!!!!!!!!!!! Martin Hall and the chippin chamber comon golf channel stop being political and open your eyes this is the next big instructor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi and thanks for these videos ! great stuff... question on your grip in this video. would you consider it a strong grip as your left hand looks like I can see quite a bit of the back of your glove. just curious. I struggle with having too strong of a grip I'm told so thought I'd bring it up.
I'd been following your swing vids for a year or so., and i owe u a BIG THANK U..!!
i'd finally groove my swing but i realise i have the tendency to over-swing. my body will keep turning even though i try to control it / stop it. U can see it in my swing video.
do u think i shld just ignore it and focus on releasing club to the target and ignore all the swing positions??
Hi Shaun I'm fourteen and just starting to get the handicap down off seventeen. And I was just wondering there in your video you have the ball very forward in your stance for a six iron do you change ball position for every club or keep it the same. What video do u think would be the best for me to look at for consistency. Thanks
I have noticed that you open with Hi, Guys, I think that you aren't being political correct you are leaving out all the gals, which is how it should be.
No just kidding but you could gain more viewers if you were to include them. Something like Hi, Guys and subordinate others. This might not be the way to go but you get the idea.
Exactly!!! This is a spine tilt angle issue in the backswing; please check out "golf pro lesson proper spine tilt angle" which addresses the overswing; thanks for the question! Shawn
I wanted to say thanks for these lessons. I have been very sketchy with my irons and have never been able to take divots until two days ago when I started watching your videos. The idea of momentum shift and cracking the whip have done wonders for my irons.
Last night was the first time that I was able to strike the ball consistently and take nice divots. My swing feels effortless and smooth.
I can't thank you enough for your instructional videos.
Great observation! Sorry I did not get back to you on this; it is hard keeping up with 150 videos...:) I enjoy swinging against the left side and the traditional way with the left heel coming up and then planting for a little extra kick in the momentum; see the following video: "Golf Pro Lesson 2008 golf swing review" part 1 and 2 Shawn
I notice on your practice swings that you just brush the grass with the clubhead, but on the shot you take a Divot. I'm curious what you think about to take a divot on the actual shot. very often I do perfect brushes on my practice swing, then top the ball on the actual swing. Topping is my main problem.
Have a look at the following videos which should help; "Through the ball" and try the 2 ball skip through from this video; then watch the "Contact and spin" and the "Compress through the ball" videos. The grip needs to be solid and the swing must revolve around a very steady axis so if you have more issues, watch the "no Bones About it" and the "Tilted spiral" series. All are on the "You Tube Shawn" page of my website; Shawn
Shawn, Thanks to your Wrecking Ball analogy and wrist hinge info, I finally have a backswing. Just tried your "toss" backswing and I hit the snot out of my fairway woods (never had that feeling or distance). Felt like a pro. Question: Looked at my backswing on video & noticed my left arm breaks down, but the club only goes to parallel. What can I do and how much power am I losing? P.S. I sold all of my instructional videos/books because you are my new coach!
Have a lok at my "Golf Pro Lesson Left Arm Straight?" video and you will feel how much power you are leaking if any at all since I do not know to what extent you are bending it since you seem to be hitting the ball well according to your description! :)
Thanks for helping me enjoy my game, You are a great teacher.
Two questions: 1 after the toss what is that you let fall? Often it is said to let the CLUB fall but from this video I get the idea that is the weight of the whole unit - trunk, arms and the club. Is this correct?
2 when you are "assisting" the downswing momentum, (a) at what point in the swing to turn it on and (b) what area do you use. Is it only the Butt "counter weight,"or + the arms,+right shoulder or something else?
It is the whole shoulder-arms-club unit that falls and this unit stays in the position it acquired in the backswing when the right arm folded out of the way of momentum and the wrists hinged for the same reason...the arms will stay in this position until the hands get past the ball and then gravity will act on the club head and release it through the ball...You would assist with the whole body; the harder you assist, the more the body reacts and will clear out faster...Shawn
Hey Shawn, I've watched a lot of your videos, but this toss-fall concept is interesting. I've primarily been a Hogan junky, and his five lessons helps me a lot when I start playing poorly. This idea of toss has really helped my takeaway. A lot actually. So much, that today I finally broke 100. In fact I shot 12 strokes under my previous best. I almost played the entire round with 1 ball! Lost it on 18 :( Two thumbs up! PS shot 94 today. Now my next target is to break 90 :) Thanks again
That's Marcelo here from Ireland. I've just started playing Golf ad I'm lovin'it. I was checking on youtube for Golf lessons and found your video. What I can say is WHAT A LUCKY FIND! Very good videos, indeed. I wish I live in Canada (or you in Ireland), so I could get some coaching. ;)
Definetely theses videos will make a huge positive difference in the wa I play. I will subscribe now for your videos. All the best and God bless you! Marcelo.
do you advocate not pushing with the right armin the swing at all? i ask because 3D machines have proved that you will never gain your total distance if you dont PULL at start down, and PUSH as you approach impact. i have gathered you dislike 'shoving' and instead prefer 'whipping' and 'pulling' the club through
Try to boil it down to even less than that; it would be too difficult for the average person to think of doing this in such a short amount of time; I describe it as assisting momentum...you assist momentum with the whole body; and the right arm is definitely part of that; and the right arm pulls as well...like pulling a stone through to skip or pulling a racket through in a tennis serve...the sequence is elbow, hand, club...Shawn
Shawn - would you agree that the "whole body assist - including the right arm" requires your wrists to remain loose and passive. In my case, the hardest part of assisting momentum is keeping my wrists out of the equation and flipping the clubhead at the ball. Chris
Hey Chris; Remember that the focus should always be through the ball towards a target; have a look at my new "Alignment Tweaking" video to get a hang of how to LET THE MOMENTUM GO in the direction you want it to go; you never want to feel that you are MAKING GO anywhere...Shawn
Your videos are great...your describing everything I'm not doing...I'm just using brute force...:(
I would really like to try the toss/fall, but I'm not sure how you differentiate between 50% and 80%...what are you acccelerating addionally? (arms, body,??)
Hi Alex and thanks for the comment; you can have a look at my "Golf Pro Lesson Power Sources" video on the "you tube Shawn" page of my website; it should answer much better than a reply of less than 500 characters! :)
Your videos have been stellar and improved my shotmaking more than I can describe...but being the good student that I am for you now......I noticed that your setup is conflicting to another video Ive seen on your videos.....Your setup with this six iron in "Momentum Toss Part 1" is more forward (ball to front foot) I thought all iron shots until you get to 4 iron and below is middle stance alignment? Am I overanalyzing or missing something.
When on course, the camera angle is sometimes off and this causes the viewer to see something different; it is the same when you are watching a golf event on TV! Great Question! This is why the role of the analist is important because they can describe the kind of shot they are executing and this helps the viewer get all the facts...
My ball position was just slightly forward of centre on that shot... Shawn
Hey Shawn, does your dvd have new video footage or is it compiled from all the videos on Youtube?
On another note, I seem to get very sloppy results with the toss idea. Almost like I toss the club back on different angles every time and my follow through also changes. Is there a certain direction that I should focus my toss on the back swing because I think my toss is all over the place...lol.
I am having this same issue, but I believe it should feel as though your hands are raising straight up your chest, right in front of your sternum. Your hip and shoulder turn will give you the required backswing completion without having to reach back further with your arms. Your posture will dictate swing plane.
Your "hub" or head is the top of the axis that your swing turns around; to feel the right movement you want to perfect the themes of the "Head Steady" and the "Feet together" videos(all are on the You Tube Shawn page of my website)...The DVD is from scratch and has all the themes in order of importance and has a few surprises along the way; it also has a hands on with every shot on course from Driver to putter in the bonus DVD (3rd DVD)
It matters big time and the answer is well after impact through the "second ball" (Go to my website at shawnclementgolf and see the video "Through the ball" on the "You Tube Shawn" page as well as the "Catapult Power" vid; Thanks for the question! Shawn
No bragging but yes; and effortlessly...but this is not the typical distance I will hit it...last year it was my 185 club and this year it seems to have become my 195 club at 80%...
Question-I'm working on changing my backswing (I was getting my arms WAY behind me and hitting big chunked shots). When you say 'toss' the arms back, what part of your body is initiating this move while keeping your arms out in front? Do you focus on the left shoulder going back, or is it a chest turn...? Love the relaxed look of it.
I'm moving to Canada from the UK soon, near Richmond. Be great to come over and get a few 1-on-1 lessons when you're available.
Shawn, When you say toss with the body do you mean any particular part of the body - the left shoulder, torso, hips?
Thanks for all the vids. JamesIvob

Shawn,
I'm trying to reduce the length of my swing. I have a tendency to severly overturn and get way past parallel getting wobbly at the top.
I think my problem is that when I do a 3 quarter swing I feel that I don't have enough momentum.
Please advise. Thanks! =)
