Late 19th and early 20th century western historians who were inamorata (in love) with anything Greek, saw ancient Greece as the cradle of the Western civilization. They regarded Philip II of Macedon and his Macedonians as destroyer of "Greek spirit and culture", people who extinguished the flame from the Athenian glory. Athens in particular, and the rest of the Greek city-states in general.......cont
These people couldn't accept the fact that the organism in the Greek city-state, as they've come to know, no longer breathed any signs of life, and that the Macedonians as a non-Greek nation possessed power, discipline, and inner strength to conquer not only the Greeks but the Persians too. EG : When Philip II and his Macedonians conquered the Greeks after Chaeronea it was not a conquest but a "unification of Greece" (HOW CAN YOU CONQUER YOUR OWN LAND ?)......cont
When the Macedonian Army conquered territories from Greece to India, it was the "Greek Empire" that received the recognition, not the Macedonian Empire (although Alexander's empire had never been called Greek in any ancient sources). More modern inventions were added - that with the conquest of Asia the "Greeks were spreading Hellenism", and that the Macedonian kingdoms after Alexander, (which were ruled till their end by Macedonians, not by Greeks), were "Hellenistic kingdoms", etc.etc.
Claims that Macedonians are Bulgarians is false. Ethnographers and historians have concluded that Macedonians are a separate people. Greek claims also are undercut by historical Greek census data revealing the Macedonian language was spoken in Greece in the 1920s, counted separately from Bulgarian, Greek and Serbian. Furthermore, the Greek government in the late 1920s published, but later banned and burned, several thousand grammar books for Macedonian schoolchildren, written in Macedonian.
PEOPLE! Stop arguing about Greeks and Bulgarians and the state of the Greek economy and enjoy the awesome video! Keol101 just made it for class at school and I'm sure he didn't want all this arguing going on in the comments. PEACE!
@WSWarthog you had a primitive language that didnt advance ...... the Latin and Saxon Germanic is what English is comprised of now. nearly 60% of English words are actually greco-roman.
A primitive language is not the same thing as no language whatsoever. And there are places in Britain where people mostly speak some native British language with little or no influence from other languages. Besides, can you name a single major European language in existence today without heavy influence from Ancient Greek, Latin, and other dead languages such as Saxon or Frankish?
@nikidi1992 - Nationalism is just a title created by those who want to keep us divided by creating victims and criminals. If this were not true you and I would not be having this conversation nor would you have cited albert einsteins words simply because I defended history.....
@nikidi1992 - Yes we do need to see each other as brothers but brothers r not identical even when they r twins. Brothers celebrate each other’s achievements & contributions just as they understand each other’s limitations they don’t negate their accomplishment’s when they exceed their own & they don’t hate them for it. Personally love to acknowledge people as being from Ghana, Russia etc. In doing so I understand who they r & what has shaped them. Loving my culture doesn't mean I hate theirs.
@nikidi1992 - just for the record i said that Greece (the topic of the video) took and gave just like other nations took and now are giving. All nations from start to finish should be given their due respect for the parts they played and are playing....
@nikidi1992 - from your fervor to criticize Greece you did not even read my post correctly. I'm afraid that the only bigot here hell bent on criticizing and debasing a nation is you and personally i feel sorry for you. You have my sympathies....
@nikidi1992 - yes Greece took from other civilizations and developed them into something great much like Michael Angelo took from life around him and created masterpieces. Thanks to Alexander the Great who spread his Hellenistic culture throughout the world we are now able to see other civilizations build on what the Greeks gave them. This is how it should be and we must pay homage to then and to now and give both of them respect.

Ah, ancient greece... highly overrated in the modern western societies. It was more of an oriental civilization, truely ancient with all the limitations of the era, plus vices of it's own. Not the least of which being it's utter perverted mindset, hello paedo! Irrational superstition, yeah "consult the Oricle" will you not. Very interesting how the majority of "democratic" Athens were actually literally SLAVES! The "decadent" and eastern Persian Empire was far more enlightened than these savages
@HellesBringer To talking to the oracle well that is like any religons plus many people in Ancient Greece were threatened for not believeing in the god's and that is why Sophocles was killed.
I'm so proud of Greece.We were one of the greatests civilizations along with Egypt and China.Egypt was the greatest one and we Greeks learned a lot from them.Can someone please answer to my question??? I heared on a documentary that Cleopatra was decended(sorry for wrong spelling) from Alexander the great,is that true?
There is no direct link between ancient Greece and present Western civilisation. The Greeks as we all know are people from the Mediterranean and they came from a macho culture. Present Western culture is influenced by the Celtic and Germanic culture of North Western Europe. Ancient Greek based their culture on the ancient Egypt and Mesopotamian. Pretty bad that those ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamian did not leave us with any books. I believe Ancient Greek is part of the Near Eastern culture.
Such as the democracy, the western musical scale and many many others...
Maybe the Greek culture did not spread any more to the modern world, as in the ancient times, but if there was no the Greek ideas and discovers then we wouldn't be like today.
We speak now that they created automatic doors about 18 centuries before the West to do the same invent!
The true beneficiary of Greek culture was the Hellenised Middle Easterners of Eastern Mediterranean. These people were conquered by the Muslim Arabs. Arabs just absorbed the Hellenic culture to make it part of Islamic culture. The Umayyads were defeated by the Abbasids and moved to Spain. The Umayyads brought with them Hellenic culture from Syria to Spain. The transfer of knowledge is from Moorish Spain to Italy. That's how Italian Renaissance began, hence Modern Western Civilisation.
@beauvoir1949 you have no idea what you re talking about... Northern European nations are Celtic in tradition, greek in mind and ideology. And for your information, the Egyptians and MEsopotamians did leave us with writings.... But not a much, nor as splendid as the greeks did....
@beauvoir1949 And from all those byzantine scholars that went to Italy after Constantinople fell in 1453. Ever herd of Plethon Gemistos? (NeoPlatonic philosopher. Google him)
As a young man he went to study at Adrianopolis, by now the Turkish capital following its capture by the Ottoman Sultan Murad I in 1365. Adrianopolis was now a centre of learning modelled by Murat on the caliphates of Cairo and Baghdad. Here he began to study Plato, and admired the philosopher so much that late in life he took the similar-meaning name Plethon.
by Adrianopolis became centre of learning bcos of Sultan Murad I. What I am trying to say there was a gap between the Classical Greek era and Renaissance. The gaps was filled by a few Muslim dynasties.
@beauvoir1949 lol. Offcourse there was a gap... the MEdieval centuries, due to Christianism. But that stands for the western Europe. Thi gs in the East was a bit different, but it would be something difficult to discuss on tube. Read PAul Lemerle' s books: The 1st and 2nd Byzantine Umanism, and Arwelle' s book "Why Byzance?". The byzantine era is being neglected and missunderstood in the West. Perhaps because of the 1054 A.D. events, perhaps because the byzantines saw themselves as the
@beauvoir1949 only "Roman" emperors... Be that as it may, the Byzantine east has been more open to ancient greek culture than the West. Maybe because they spoke the same language. Homer, for example, was being taught in Byzantine Unis 500 years prior to the Italian ones. Thucidides' History was kept and read in the epmperian library of Constantinople till the Venicians conquered Constantinople in 1204 and stole the book. Along with the 2/3 of world s gold (according toCrusaders' Chronicles)
Nice of you. Actually there's not so much gap between "European" civilisation and Middle Eastern. Only recent nationalists I think were trying to create that demarcation.
@beauvoir1949 I strongly believe that there s no gap... Both European Nationalists and Arab-islam fondamentalists did the job... For example, the absolute medieval best seller, a book consisted by small stories, relleased as "Dolopathos" in Latin, and i cannot remember the greek title, was based on the arabian 1000+1 nights!!! The "turn" in history could be dated back in the beggining of 20th century: the reason why Europe turned its back to the East and vice versa, is the German Collonialistic
Great Job. I teach ancient history to 7th graders and they loved it. Problem is, I can't access Youtube at school anymore. Do you post it anywhere else? CD
Wow, this video is great! I have a Ancient Greece video project that I'm doing in social studies on architecture. I had no idea how to make my video interesting, but this just gave me a lot of great ideas! Thanks!
once Greece was beautiful, now it is full of niggers, muslim rapists and all that shite subhumen.
Enough is enough, 1 in 4 people in Greece is no Greek. They are getting passports, jobs, everything... shame to our marxist government. Shame to our soft police force
The birth place of western civilization has ended up a landfill of refugees and filthy immigrants who are taking our jobs, thanks to our stupid government and the fucking eu that allows every one to get inside
Greco-Buddhism, sometimes spelt Graeco-Buddhism, refers to the cultural syncretism between Hellenistic culture and Buddhism, which developed between the 4th century BCE and the 5th century CE
Oh pathetic red faced monster!..My father is a doctor saving lives!!!..We have nglish lady to wash our toilets!!!..She is an immigrant from England,like YOU!
You are pathetic and jealous!!!!You are not touching us ,with your pathetic comments!!!......One last word of advice ,....Do not show your barbarism so much!!!!.
when we discovered maths, geometry, philoshophy, drama and politics, you english were still in furs eating and living in the woods like animals....so dont speak...
the "stories" were not just dumb stories created to explain things. In a thinking society such as the Greek one, this form of thought couldn't have existed. These stories were taken literally by many, but some saw them for what they are...metaphors. Thinkers of the sort included the Platonists and Pythagoreans. Those who saw the Gods for who they really are. The form of thinking you demostrated in the video is invalid and offensive.....lets hope you don't get struck by lightening ^_^ :P
yeah i watched this with the song by GUI BARATTO "BEAUTIFUL LIFE" ON HIS CD CHROMOPHOBIA TO THIS VIDEO AND IT MADE IT EXTREMELY EPIUC .. BANGING VIDEO WITH THAT SONE BY GUI BARRATTO GICE IT A SHOT
@7numrat why so obsessed with Greece u ugly filthy monkey slut? Get lost, there are ancient scripts and monuments that CANNOT be falsefied or invented bojo...IS PARTHENON FAKE? WAS IT NOT THE ATHENS OF PERICLES THE FIRST DEMOCRACY OF THE WORLD? FUCK YOU IDIOT
I did it purely for extra credit, so I didn't get an actual grade on it.
When we did our unit on Ancient Greece in class my teacher split us into groups. The group which scored the highest amount of points (which could be earned both in class and with extra credit) would be exempt from the end of unit test.
Me doing this video gave my group enough points to be exempt from the test. Which was awesome.
everytime i'm sad... idk y but i watch this video and it ALWAYS makes me smile. i thought it was great and i liked da music and everything. mi favorite thing was da "cant ctop thinkin bout love" verse and u showed da guy thinking. PRICELESS!
cool video, but not really informative.After suffer through reading the "darth Vader" style info,which would be much faster and more comfortable reading in a book, then there were just images from Greece but no info about what we actually are watching.."this is the Parthenon in athens".."This is Delhi" and so on..But hey..who cares as long as its cool..RIGHT? Go USA...
i say restore every temple in Greece to its original glorious appearance! especially Delphi!! with the birth of neo-paganism, Delphi has become important again.
that was a very good video, brilliantly excecuted, well edited, im currently studying the greeks and thats a great way to learn. the power of the greeks through star wars
I'm an elementary teacher and I was wondering if you could send me this file so I could use it in a lesson plan for my class? Our school blocks youtube or I would just bring it up
It is "cool" ok..But it really doesn`t teach the kids much about WHAT they are looking at, does it?
It doesn`t say this is the Parthenon, or Delphi..it just rushes through images from Greece with a bad "Hollywood" playback.JESUS!!! No wonder americans know SO little about the world outside USA..SAD...
I don't think you can actually learn from watching pictures... maybe just the surface of Greece. The text was the only informative thing in the video :S, and it was just as boring as reading it from a book and playing music. But it was a good try

The ONLY reason the Anglos came to power is because the ROMANS conquered them and put their seed into them and Taught them Civilization. LOL

GeorgeLambropoulos97 1 year ago
@GeorgeLambropoulos97 not exactly. Cleopatra was the decedant of Alexander s general, Ptolemaios

I believe Ancient Greek is part of the Near Eastern culture.
beauvoir1949 1 year ago
@beauvoir1949 No! There is!
Tritalas 1 year ago
@Tritalas
That's how Italian Renaissance began, hence Modern Western Civilisation.
beauvoir1949 1 year ago
@beauvoir1949 you have no idea what you re talking about... Northern European nations are Celtic in tradition, greek in mind and ideology. And for your information, the Egyptians and MEsopotamians did leave us with writings.... But not a much, nor as splendid as the greeks did....
vabilas28 1 year ago
@vabilas28
how on earth Europeans inherit the Greek philosophy? Through the Moorish Spain!
beauvoir1949 1 year ago
@beauvoir1949 And from all those byzantine scholars that went to Italy after Constantinople fell in 1453. Ever herd of Plethon Gemistos? (NeoPlatonic philosopher. Google him)
vabilas28 1 year ago
@vabilas28
from wikipedia - Gemisthus Pletho
As a young man he went to study at Adrianopolis, by now the Turkish capital following its capture by the Ottoman Sultan Murad I in 1365. Adrianopolis was now a centre of learning modelled by Murat on the caliphates of Cairo and Baghdad. Here he began to study Plato, and admired the philosopher so much that late in life he took the similar-meaning name Plethon.
beauvoir1949 1 year ago
@beauvoir1949 Yes, and years later he went to Italy. Andrianople was the 2nd biggest Byzantine city.
vabilas28 1 year ago
@vabilas28
by Adrianopolis became centre of learning bcos of Sultan Murad I. What I am trying to say there was a gap between the Classical Greek era and Renaissance. The gaps was filled by a few Muslim dynasties.
beauvoir1949 1 year ago
@beauvoir1949 lol. Offcourse there was a gap... the MEdieval centuries, due to Christianism. But that stands for the western Europe. Thi gs in the East was a bit different, but it would be something difficult to discuss on tube. Read PAul Lemerle' s books: The 1st and 2nd Byzantine Umanism, and Arwelle' s book "Why Byzance?". The byzantine era is being neglected and missunderstood in the West. Perhaps because of the 1054 A.D. events, perhaps because the byzantines saw themselves as the
vabilas28 1 year ago
@beauvoir1949 only "Roman" emperors... Be that as it may, the Byzantine east has been more open to ancient greek culture than the West. Maybe because they spoke the same language. Homer, for example, was being taught in Byzantine Unis 500 years prior to the Italian ones. Thucidides' History was kept and read in the epmperian library of Constantinople till the Venicians conquered Constantinople in 1204 and stole the book. Along with the 2/3 of world s gold (according toCrusaders' Chronicles)
vabilas28 1 year ago
@vabilas28
Nice of you. Actually there's not so much gap between "European" civilisation and Middle Eastern. Only recent nationalists I think were trying to create that demarcation.
beauvoir1949 1 year ago
@beauvoir1949 I strongly believe that there s no gap... Both European Nationalists and Arab-islam fondamentalists did the job... For example, the absolute medieval best seller, a book consisted by small stories, relleased as "Dolopathos" in Latin, and i cannot remember the greek title, was based on the arabian 1000+1 nights!!! The "turn" in history could be dated back in the beggining of 20th century: the reason why Europe turned its back to the East and vice versa, is the German Collonialistic

the "stories" were not just dumb stories created to explain things.

PIRATESROCK101 2 years ago
I did it purely for extra credit, so I didn't get an actual grade on it.
When we did our unit on Ancient Greece in class my teacher split us into groups. The group which scored the highest amount of points (which could be earned both in class and with extra credit) would be exempt from the end of unit test.
Me doing this video gave my group enough points to be exempt from the test. Which was awesome.

cool video, but not really informative.After suffer through reading the "darth Vader" style info,which would be much faster and more comfortable reading in a book, then there were just images from Greece but no info about what we actually are watching.."this is the Parthenon in athens".."This is Delhi" and so on..But hey..who cares as long as its cool..RIGHT? Go USA...

ARE YOU for real?
are you seriously going to use this in class?
It is "cool" ok..But it really doesn`t teach the kids much about WHAT they are looking at, does it?
It doesn`t say this is the Parthenon, or Delphi..it just rushes through images from Greece with a bad "Hollywood" playback.JESUS!!! No wonder americans know SO little about the world outside USA..SAD...
marina6y 2 years ago
I don't think you can actually learn from watching pictures... maybe just the surface of Greece. The text was the only informative thing in the video :S, and it was just as boring as reading it from a book and playing music. But it was a good try
