I think it's funny how my brethren fellows from Kokomo are sad to see a gas tower be destroyed and say it was a part of our rich history. A GAS TOWER. I can only imagine how people in Washington D.C. would feel if the Washington Monument was torn down or destroyed...
OMG this makes me want to go home so bad! Im stuck in Groton CT right now at Naval Sub School, and I just found this video and remembered how far away I am from home. I remember that day like it was yesterday! I listen to the Kokomo police scanner everynight, its familiar and recognizing the street names makes me feel like Im in my old room :D
@xshootertilidie It cost $75,000 a year to maintain and up to $1,000,000 a year to paint. That was just too much money to spend on something that was no longer functional.
The gas tower should have NEVER been destroyed. Kokomo will never be the same without it. Many people will tell you when traveling that it gave them a sense of "coming home"
@Sugarlandjackson thats GateWay. speaking of. there still there to this day. i live right across the street from there. but we bought the land the tower was on. and were soon to build a hotel or somethin.
I'm from Mich, but have relatives in Anderson. The tower rising in the distance over 31 was a welcome sign that a good meal in a friendly town was approaching after several hours in the car. Some of my earliest memories are of Kokomo, so I miss the tower too...
I still think it's funny that people got on roofs and stuff to see it blow up. I miss it though. I would always look for it if we went ona long trip so I would know how far waay from home we were.
that gas tower always took me home whether it was coming home from my grandpas or bringing me back the right way when we got lost on a roadie...lol. good times. sad to see it go.
I remember it being the talest (or at least one of the talest i dont think it is taller than any of the delphi or chyster plants) it was a land mark to Kokomo but yeah it was tall and wide
That really sucked. I grew up in Kokomo, but I was in Kansas for a few years. I come back, and this landmark is completely gone! It was a sad day indeed.
i was about 10 when this happened.
