@gurololipop I don't think he'd gotten his Remastered DVD Box Set of Star Trek: TOS to study at this point. So he was probably just working from memory. Me, I've seen every episode at least 20 times and know you're right.
For those who don't know what's happening in the Enemy Within clip: The Shatner in eyeliner is evil, the Shatner without eyeliner is NOT. And if you meet a man in eyeliner in real life -- RUN!
This special aired the night before Star Trek 2 was released in the theaters. After this special, the eposide "Space seed" aired. That was the show that star trek 2 was based on.
I was scared Spock would get burned before the meld would take place, The Horta was really taking a chance there, since every humanoid had attacked it in some form or another...
If you ever learned CPR you can do the vulcan crip for real, there,s a muscle in the neck that if you pinch it the right way it hurts so bad you have to react, so they used that so concure if someone is really unconcuse because you can,t fake that and not react;-)
In 3:02-- uh... if i remember that correctly, I believe that they wanted to convince the enemy that Kirk was dead, not McCoy. Wasn't that the Enterprise Incident?
@MissionObsessable23 : Indeed. Slips like this are a bit annoying. Yes, it was "The Enterprise Incident" and yes, it was Kirk. Leonard's Star Trek Memories seem to be somewhat flawed here. How could he get that so wrong?
actually i thought it also looked like a pizza back when I was a kid and watched this show originally... I loved the tribbles and when spock fell in love..
My brother watched "The Devil in the Dark" as a kid, too, and said the same thing. The part about this episode that cracks me up the most is when does the Vulcan mind meld, Shatner was not on the set. He was at his father's funeral, so he asked Nimoy to re-enact it for his close ups. Shatner then yelled, after Spock yells "PAIN!" "Somebody give that Vulcan an aspirin!" Everyone laughed except Nimoy who was pissed! I read that in Shatner's book.
lol never heard that one but I can believe it. I have never really liked shatner even in the original shows. he thinks he is a comedian and he is just plain "stupid" an ahole if you mind my pun..
I'm forced to agree on that one about Shatner. He sort of walked onto the set with that attitude and was ready to say, "James T. Kirk" the way he said "Denny Crane." He supposedly patched things up with everyone after the movie series was up. Basically the only friend he had on the show was Nimoy.
@Neville6000 : 43 years... and William Shitner can't be bothered to pronounce George's last name correctly. My opinion of Bill, once high, has flagged substantially over the years, as I've found out more about him.
@sbergman27 I agree, "...once high, has flagged substantially..." I had heard that Doohan had said, "I like Capt Kirk...don't have much like for Bill Shatner."
3:21 and Nimoy is WRONG. Then again Nimoy himself admits that he soften to the character and Star Trek more as he got older. It was Captain Kirk he used the Death Grip on and it was an actual nerve hold that only "stunned" - but faked death.
Hey, you are absolutely right! It wasn't McCoy and it wasn't any death faking! As you say, it was Kirk. The episode is called The Enterprise Incident and the main plot is Spock and Kirk are ordered by the Star Fleet to take the Klingon Cloaking Device. I'm glad you noticed as well as me :)
Little known fact: At 0:35 seconds that is not William Shatner but a Body double. Shatner was with visiting his family because his father had died. Notice how the phaser is down and then he's pointing it. They filmed the facial shots after he got back.
i love leonard nimoy. spock is AWESOME... BUT how does he screw up an explanation of one of his best episodes? it was KIRK he pretended to kill with the non existant vulcan death grip, and it was the romulans he was trying to convince! silly spock, forgetting all that DX
I have no idea why but when he said 'and that was the first time i ever played a scene with a rock' it made me laugh, i think Leonard Nimoy is truely a great actor, and i will always think of him as Mr Spock :D
"Devil In The Dark" is the episode when Shatner's father passed during filming. Shatner actually was not present for the filming of this scene. His reactions and lines were filmed later. Actually, it was Kirk that was "killed" by the "Death Grip".
It's funny. This special was the first time i had ever seen the first Mind Meld scene, although I knew the episode very well. In the New York area, on W-PIX syndication..the scene was cut out. Can you believe that? Shows how much syndication stations cared about continuity. Only when the videos first became commercially available in 1985, did the syndication packages change.
Great Video. Leonard Nimoy tells all in this detailed narration of Star Treks favourite episodes. There's no such thing as a Vulcan Death Grip is one tid bit of juicy information. Thanks
I LOVE "Devil in the Dark!"

I saw this back in 1983. They mixed this show into the syndicated rotation of TOS for awhile.

@Milkpaw Yes. Leonard Nimoy is THE Spock, and NOBODY ANYWHERE could EVER EVER EVER EVER (EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER...) TAKE HIS PLACE.
Zachary Quinto can't even come CLOSE. He was BORN for this role.
