Boo! They should have just fought none of the stupid shit. Stand up Ali would have dismantled this guy and very much likely vice versa for the other guy with his ground game. This guy didn't want to fight all he was trying to due was subdue Ali and then possibly go for it.

It was actually pretty brilliant on Inoki's part. Ali had neither kicking nor grappling skill. Low kicks to Ali's thighs, followed by attacking from the mat, kept Ali entirely out of his element.
While I'm not sure what the rules of the fight were, it's obvious that prolonged ground fighting was not allowed. If the ref hadn't stepped in after Inoki scored a takedown, Ali would have been finished.
This fight was well ahead of its time.

You're absolutely right. I remember reading before the fight that by contract most of Inoki's weapons were essentially taken away. He never should have agreed to the fight.

yeah but by fighting on his ass the whole fight was ruined!.he was bare knuckled and threw no punch but his feet were shoed and those kicks hurt!ali should have stepped on his head.

I agree, it turned into a super-boring fight. But, as to the comment on punching, what kind of idiot would Inoki have to be to try boxing with Ali? He wasn't stupid-- even without gloves, Ali would have destroyed him, standing.
If Inoki had been allowed to grapple with Ali, the boxer would not have lasted very long, at all.
