It's great to see this old video, but I NEVER understood who possibly thought this should have been a first single on an album that included "Kiss on My List", "You Make My Dreams", "You've Lost that Loving Feeling", "Gotta Lot of Nerve (Perfect Perfect), and "Everytime You Go Away". This is really a rather weak track by comparison. I think it is most significant for marking the last time in the duo's history when John Oates was seen as an equal partner by the record labels.
A great song by Daryl Hall & John Oates, & quite an underrated song at that. Hard to believe it only peaked at #48 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart?! Should've been at least a Top 20 single!
I've always wanted to know the chords to this song. It's pretty easy but I don't know what they're playing in the chorus during the 'how does it feel to be back" part. Anyone know the chords in that part?
@Jules4286 I remember seeing this on MTV back in the day, always liked the video. It was cool then and it's cool now. It's always a pleasure when it's played live, a full-on John song, Daryl claims it as one of his favorites.
@TuxedoRay It's called a harmony guitar. Hall played those as well as the Mandar (a mandolin in the guitar range) through the 70's & 80's. He wasn't much of a six-string guitar player then.
If it wasn't for this song on MTV day one era Hall and Oates woulda been some 70's group with a couple of good songs. They got attention from the youth again and realized what the future would be and jumped on the new video bandwagon with terrific results, when other established musicians ignored video because why spend the money.
Always been one of my fave songs from the boys. Great job by John Oats on vocals. GREAT expressive vocals. Killer rhythm on the song too. Guitars are so rich and full too.
I seem to recall watching this same video of this without all the swirling colors and effects back in the 80s..I wonder if they added them on later? Anyone know?
John once said,"I am the world's highest paid back-up singer".This one and many more proves that he can solo the mike just as good as Daryl.Great song!
actually this song and video came out in 1980, the duo first single of the 80's. john oates and daryl hall swapped lead vocals rather frequently during this time. it wasn't until the "private eyes" and "h2o" albums that daryl's lead vocals dominated.
Not only was it the first single release from Hall and Oates of the 80's, it was also the first single from the "Voices" album.
In fact, the first two singles from the "Voices" album featured John Oates on lead or co-lead vocals - the only Hall and Oates album to do that. The third single from "Voices" paved the way for the duo's monumental success in the 80's - a nice little ditty called "Kiss On My List."
That doesn't diminish this song though. A great tune by Oates.
This is one of my all time favorite H&O tunes and videos! John Oates sings lead the whole time, love John's Rickenbacker on this one, what a sweet sound! This video always reminds me of MTV when it was too cool, back in early 1982. Live, this tune even has Daryl rocking and dancing! Dig the Pitts Performance cart racing t-shirt on John (Van Nuys California). Thanks for posting it Aboutacat!
28 years later, I still think this is their best song....very Tom Petty-esque with that Rickenbacker 12-string. But it was not that popular because Oates sang lead and radio programmers were used to Hall's voice.
Always Thought This was their Best Song...very Tom Petty-esque.But it was a rare song Oates sang lead and radio programmers wanted Hall's golden voice...
It's a myth that H&O became popular because of MTV.
This song, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling, Kiss on my List & You Make My Dreams already peaked by the time MTV started in August 1981.
