I think most drummers do notice this type of playing and are not impressed with it because they don't view drumming as a musical but rather as an athletic endeavor. To play "behind the beat" like Gerry Conway does in this song (and he does it impeccably) is soooo much more difficult than to play 64th notes at 842 beats per minute, because it requires the ability to have great *time* and musical *feel*. a skill that very few drummers will ever have.
@ultrakool You have discerning taste in drumming - that's London's Gerry Conway, one of the best rock drummers that nobody's ever heard of. Following six years of playing with Cat Stevens, he joined Jethro Tull after drummer Barrie Barlow left the band, He has also done session work with Paul McCartney.
@billyjoeboomboom right, thx. how can any drummer not notice those off-kilter, snare fills? herky-jerky and yet dead on in their timing. truly inspirational..thx gc..and bjboomboom for knowing about it and keeping it alive..
@billyjoeboomboom It must be Gerry Conway in amazing "Angelsea"? I'm not a musician, but enjoy singling out each instrument in a song as I listen over and over. (40 plus years a fan of Cat)
@pamlindersmith Yes, that's Gerry playing in Angelsea. If you listen to songs over and over, singling out each instrument like you say, in my book you ARE a musician. (Just one that doesn't play any musical instruments.) My first - and most infuential - college music instructor used to lecture us that the most important attribute of a great musician is the ability to listen.
@billyjoeboomboom Thanks for the huge compliment. I am a visual artist and am fortunate to work in the visual and performing arts, "listening" and "seeing" all the time.
@ThevanGoghBlues Is your story on your site? I did not see it. I am a female and when I was young I should have tried to audition for Cat's band. I am revisiting his music. His album called Yusuf has a few good tunes on it. This one is my favorite song by Cat.
@csgoldengirl1 i think he has another broken heart, or is looking for the right gal and is afraid of getting burnt again , and maybe putting his life in the hands of fate,, just a thought it's deeply worded for sure
My father used to listen Cat Stevens when i was young. Recently i discovered in my mom's house a bunch of LP's from Cat Stevens that belonged to my diceased father! So great to revival those great songs!! Today i know how to speak english (im from Brazil) and the lyrics are awesome!! THANK YOUUUUUUUU!!!
Cat Stevens tried to have Salmand Rushdie killed for free speech he is no different from a Jihadist in Stockholme jihad against the West, that the freedom of speech is one of the foremost battlegrounds of this war. Jihadists like Taimour Abdulwahab Al-Abdaly, the suicide bomber who killed himself in Stockholm on Saturday was trying to kill those who insult the prophet as Cat Stevens tried years before both are criminals
and Cat Stevens is the worst coward of all since islam bans his music
@clucaspik awww! You are sooooooo lucky, I AM UNBELIEVABLY JEALOUS!!! :( Seriously, I wish the 70s' could come again...we need another CAT STEVENS\YUSUF ISLAM.
Cat Stevens is and always was, on a very high level, very evolved, he had a unique ability to create the most whimsical and deep melodies and yet, had a child like ability to express his yearning for peace and tranquility in the most simple way. His music is a testament to his place world history as beloved, with a one of a kind musical talent.
i love cat i dont understand why people hate him just because he became a Muslim i think that we should all be able to see past this and not hate people just because of there religion. Peace
I appreciate the fine music the Cat Stevens gave us, and I thank him for it. As far as your question goes about people hating him because he is a Muslim... The answer is clear: People who hate Cat Stevens because he is a Muslim are religious bigots.
The instrumental interlude that begins approximately at 1:40 is deeply moving. I could listen to it for an hour at a time. Thanks for posting! :-)

Yusuf Islam has no right in British society to call for death threats against a man who wrote a book
it is sickening that Cat Stevens can sing about peace and love yet when the muslims get him he turns to hate others

I'll echo those comments. The "Cat" was one of the great artists I grew up with in the seventies. Loved this tune most of all his stuff.
I hadn't heard this in decades, when I heard it yesterday on the radio, and went looking here for it again. Glad I found it.
