  • Is the glass tempered? great tank

  • @TheVerblekint No it is not. All relevant info can be found within the build link in the vid description.

  • i understand that you droped 1400 on glass but what was the other 1300 spent on?

  • @TheBiggybig Ply sheets @ $69 ea(Got these for a steal) = $276. Screws were free as I have plenty of these laying around. Builders bog = $39 30m x 1m of woven roving mat(Fiberglass reinforcement) = $260. 18L Boat Cote Epoxy = $340. Black epoxy pigment = $12.73. Epoxy solvent for clean up = $20. Silicone x 8 tubes= $67. Polycarbonate for lids = $60. Plumbing and lid hold down pipes = $90. 36 x Besser blocks for stand = $115. Total = $1279.73 + $1400 for 19mm glass delivered .

  • @greenterra are your fish doing ok or has the epoxy effected them at all because everyone is telling me that epoxy is toxic to fish

  • @TheBiggybig Not sure where you are getting that info from but I can tell you those sources should do a little more homework. 100% solids Epoxy resins are not toxic at all once cured. They are not even water soluble.

  • why no side glass? you could have...

  • @altops The front glass made up for the majority of cost for this build and using it on the sides would have increased the costs too much. It would have also decreased the insulation capabilities of the tank, plus the sides are not really visible where it is located.

  • I was expecting a reef lol, either way good looking tank!

  • I read your build documentation and couldn't find a part where you mention how much this tank cost. Would you mind giving us a ballpark idea of how much you spent?

  • @Okiimiru The build cost was $2700au for absolutely everything except filtration. The front glass was $1400au delivered as 19mm glass here is not real cheap. If I dropped the height a little, I could have used 15mm glass and over halved the glass cost. That said, I thoroughly enjoy the height and look of it and do not regret the extra expense at all. The rest of the tank was built for less than the glass panel and that is even including the Concrete blocks it sits on.

  • how long did it take to cycle a tank this big?

  • @patronesmababy I transferred media from other filters along with the fish at the same time so cycling was a non issue.

  • What? No plants?

  • Oh yes ! I need a bigger house.

  • hi greenterra... how many layers of fiberglass you have applied on the plywood?

  • @saadackbarally There is 1 layer of 300gsm cloth over everything with an additional layer over all the internal corners, braces and supports which lap onto the flat areas by about 4". Next were 2 coats of epoxy resin with a good sanding in between, sanded again and another 3 coats which were applied in succession before the previous coat was cured. Epoxy will get a chemical bond if you apply the next coat before the previous has cured. See full build via the link in the vid description.

  • @greenterra thank u very much for the info.... btw this tank is extremely nice... am gonna do a 300 litres tank soon with plywood and fiberglass as well... :)

  • what is the name to this band?

  • @MegaMmcfarland

Music is "Nose Bleed Section" by Hilltop Hoods

  • is this still running?

  • @TheHobdenMarina Yes and I expect it to for many more years to come.

  • Did you use acrylic or stander glass?

Also what thickness of acrylic would you recommend for acrylic

  • @kingofking989 19mm glass. You'll have to research acrylic.

  • Btw, when I saw your frame I was like Uhhh, how is glass gunna fit in there.

But, you got it in. Did it go in smoothly? Was it planned? Did you have experience with this?

I would die if I went to put the glass in and it was like "uhh no" and I'm stuck taking everything apart.

  • @psychoninja911 Haha..Others thought the same at the time of building it. I knew it would fit however. You just have to make sure the tanks top opening is definitely wider than the glass is high. Getting the glass in was no easy task though as it weighed a 100kg with only 2 of us to maneuver it in. The sealing part went extremely smooth.

  • @greenterra Well, you made this look easy and inexpensive. The fiberglassing or the glass itself must have been the most expensive part...

  • @psychoninja911 Thanks. The build cost was $2700au for absolutely everything except filtration.

  • @greenterra Do you build tanks regularly? Or was this your first?

  • @psychoninja911 This was my first aquarium but timber and fiberglass is nothing new to me. I am a carpenter/formsetter by trade and have several years of experience with fiberglass having owned a business in that field in the past too.

  • Awesome tank.....poor filtration

  • @Spyder001oUSAo He changed to an external sump. Well designed. With mechanical and biological filter media.

  • nice vid. the music makes me wanna get shit done. LOL.

  • nice man looks amazing :)

  • Just finished building a 12ft aquarium using this method, I started it 1 week ago, only worked on it after work for a couple of hours a day in the weekday's , then spend a whole day on it today, finally finished it, it's f*cking huge!!! 12ft x 2ft x 2ft AMAZING !!!

  • @bradrrsz Sounds like a sweet tank. The 12' length would be nice.

  • @greenterra It is mate it's a beauty! i could actually swim in it if i wanted to :L aha

  • @bradrrsz are u gonna upload a video?

  • @stacyboi317 I would but I don't own a camera or camcorder, and my Iphone has just broken :/ Ohwell gives me an excuse to buy the new Iphone 5 aha :)

  • love this build going to start building mine next week. is there any way to get the plan pictures in the link better quality? you cant see the measurements when you zoom in closer. thanks

  • @00alx00 I have fixed that for you. There is a link to a larger downloadable image below it now. Cheers.

  • @greenterra thanks

  • My method uses fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin with a black pigment to color it. You wont even see the wood. If you haven't already, a read of the build process will help you to better understand.(link in vid description)

  • so if i was to do put it on the inside and out would i still be alble to stain the wood ?

  • What kind of plywood is that? it looks different from your basic Home Depot plywood.

  • @Moontanman It is 32mm thick CDA plywood. 'CD' =Construction Flooring. The 'A' = the glue quality. 'A' being the same glues as used in marine grade plys.

  • @greenterra Thanks, I've never seen that grade around here but they do have marine plywood but it is much denser than regular plywood more like cabinet type plywood but with marine glue. Is it as expensive as marine plywood or closer to regular construction plywood? The one i am planning will not be my first but I would like to use better plywood this time. I want some place around 360 to 480 gallons or so.

  • @Moontanman Marine grade is usually the dearest. Technically, most ply should do the trick if you are to fully seal it like I have. Just make sure it is structural ply. I was lucky enough to find these sheets at a local salvage yard very cheap.

  • this is awesome

  • do u have to put the black sealant on the out side aswell?

  • @stacyboi317 Depends on your build type. I wanted no framing on the outside and wanted to be able get the tank wet in any spot without worrying about wood rot or timber expansion over time. I actually hose the whole thing down when I want to clean it.

  • Would it be cheaper by converting a wooden chest or if its even possible?

  • to say I'm jealous would be an understatement...but best of all I've been inspired...awesome tank!

  • Hi, thanks so much for loading this & staying with it for us. So impressive. The effect of the design with the sort of "window" style in itself is great compared to an all glass tank. Now I'm settled in my own place I'm looking to do something similar. It's great to get a 4 or 5 foot tank going well but then just amazing when you first see a tank where the fish have been able to grow to the size a large tank allows. It's a whole new world isn't it ? Fantastic job.

  • @gcmc2 Thank you.

  • Sir, I have just went through your web page describing the build in detail twice. AMAZING JOB. WONDERFUL TANK. Thank you for taking the time to make to make the site and go ever everything in such detail.

  • Very nicely done. I always wanted to make one that size myself. I Just have to find the time... oh, and be in a house I'm going to stay in for a few years. I moved from Texas to Kentucky one winter and had to sell off all the fish, corals, and live rock. Bummer.

  • @mytonytiger I feel you there. It can be a real downer when life doesn't fit into your fish plans.

  • great tank man, would'nt like to pay your power bill tho

  • im sorry of all the fish you could have...........

  • @tapkqw lol...and what would you suggest. Another 20 fish in there so they all end up with battle scars and torn fins. I know! I'll just keep fish that only you like and not what I like. Maybe I should get your approval before adding any in the future too. That should work! lol..Seriously, comments like yours are just pointless. If you don't have something constructive to say, just move along. I am sure you won't be missed.

  • @greenterra im not saying that its not a great tank witch it is and i plan on using somthing like your designes to build my own tank but all i was saying is is it realy nesicary for a tank that big for that size fish thats all

  • @tapkqw Yes. It is if you wan't maximum growth of your fish.. The vid here is showing juvenile fish that have plenty of growing to do. Have a look at the latest vid. Titled "American Cichlids" and you will see just how much the final 6 cichlids fill up a tank of this size.

  • lol @ european rap. cool tank though man

  • @cpaint904 Not European. Hilltop Hoods are an Australian group.

  • @cpaint904 HAHAHAHAHA European? wow.

  • That is an AWESOME tank! Great job.

  • All that and it's not even planted or anything? Great tank, but research some aquascaping! At least you didn't go plain jane saltwater with it!

  • @radkerson lol...Research aquascaping? Maybe you should research large American cichlids. The type I keep would just destroy plants all day long.

  • @greenterra Research aquascaping imo...Fish are only part of the aquascape. I mean whatever, if you want to spend the time to build an awesome tank, then throw some average looking rocks and driftwood randomly in there, fine.

  • @radkerson Youtube, the home of passive ignorance

  • @radkerson Plain jane saltwater? ROTFLMAO.

  • that tank is Really really Good but it must be a pain having to not look at your awsome work when its in the garage lol

  • @RaveToTheSound It is not in the garage. It is in our back patio/barbecue area but is completely visible from the lounge, kitchen and dining rooms.

  • How much did this cost?

  • @TheFishHunta About $2700 not including filtration.

  • @greenterra :O huh better you bought a tank

  • Hey please answer back,

Do you have to sand after every layer of fiber glass? Like do you just paint on epoxy then put the cloth on and paint over it again and then sand and repeat. Or do you do multiple sheets at 1 time then sand?

  • @STProductionFilms All your questions are answered in the build link I have posted in the video description. Cheers.

  • legend... would you do a swap wiv a 60 liter??? Jokes ;)

  • Great work !!!

  • What is the song?

  • @tinytomlinson

Hilltop Hoods - The Nosebleed Section

  • Amazing could you tell me how much this build cost?

  • @1stcichlidfever About $2700au for everything except filters/pumps.

  • can you tell me what did you use to build the tank

  • @elviracd Read the vid description.

  • @greenterra Already answered on this very page bud.

  • @greenterra some people dont like to read threw 100 pages to find it,,,,,,,

  • @604GTown604 Yeah, I know. The term for it is laziness.

  • Super construction ! Very well done!

  • Wondering how much this entire set up is? Thinking about building it when i get back from deployment.

  • Man, water changes for this sucker must be stressful. XD

SO building one of these when I get out of college. This would make the ultimate paludarium.

  • how did u install the glass ? what covers the plywood ?is there a inner frame to the tank?do u think you would have to worry about a leak? also it is one of the coolest tanks ive seen would like to see updated pictures?

  • @bobertthebeast Thanks. There is a link to a build thread in the vid description. There are also plenty of images throughout my website for an update or see my latest vid "American Cichlids".

  • This is an awesome tank! And the Hilltop Hoods only make it better.

  • great job, with the tank

  • AMAZING !!!! thank you!

  • Молодец! Отличная работа ! Респект.

  • song name

  • @pingpongmasters88 It's shown in and under the video description.

  • someone likie fishies...

  • Great job man!!

  • Top tank mate !

  • looks amazing

  • WOAH! That tank needs a name. I recommend "Moby Aquarium".

I swear, you Aussies are the most industrious bunch of people on the planet. I have seen so many really cool, over-the-top DIY projects taken up in Australia it blows my mind. Makes me want to go there.

I know the climate there is not tropical. What do you use to heat the tank and how tough is it to keep temperatures steady? Is hot weather ever a problem?

  • @coochie2u haha..Thanks. I just run 2 x 300W heaters in it the sump now. The coldest night yet has been 2 degrees Celsius and they kept it at temp easy. The thick sides really do a great job at keeping it insulated. Summer time has seen the tank temp raise a couple of degrees Celsius over the course of a day. With plenty of water circulation, this was no drama though. Thanks for the comment. ;)

  • @greenterra,

Thanks for the reply. And thanks for sharing that wonderful build with us. I hope to see more vids in the future as the inhabitants thrive, grow, and spawn. I also hope to build my own in the 300 gallon range one day and yours certainly provides some great inspiration.

    Cheers!

  • @greenterra haha if your in perth its been pushing high 30s to 40s lately hows it been holding up?

  • thats an awesome set-up how long did it take from start to finish

  • @dennisr97206Thanks. I was over the coarse of 3mths as I built it in my spare time.

  • @p9dxmanrox Fibreglass cloth wet out with Bote Cote epoxy resin. It is black because I used a pigment to color it. You can get more details about it through the link in the vid description.

  • @OBrienScotland I have been in it a couple of times.

  • Dude, your tank is bad ass. What did you apply after the fiberglass?

  • @andyahai The same Bote Cote epoxy resin I used to wet out the fibreglass. There is a link in the vid description where everything is explained in detail.

  • sick !!!!!

  • thats fucking sick dude

  • put turtles

  • how much did it cost to build mate im deffinatly gona do somfink like dis 1 day hahaah cheers ?

  • how much did it cost you to make it and with the fiber glass dont you have to re coat it every couple of years ?

  • @BIGPOND400 It was about $2700au for everything minus filtration. The glass panel alone cost $1400 here. As for having to re-coat it every couple of years. Maybe if you use a cheap epoxy product or paint but not if a quality marine grade epoxy resin is used. The inside and outside is a good as the day I filled it up.

  • @greenterra looks awesome and re epoxy the tank will be a bitch :S

  • @greenterra oh yer i had an idea last night about a full aluminium (diamond plate/cross cheched) tank cozz it wound be light as to move

  • well i just made this tank here in ireland an it cost me €650 from start to finishe but its not as tall as this one so its 300g not 700g but its stil a shit big tank for little money

  • thats super cool.. how is it holding up?

  • @Joshh2k10 Thanks. Still like the day I filled it up.

  • how much did this cost to build?

  • Nice dude never seen this done that's bad ass

  • all i got to say is F********g SICK

  • awesome tank!!! if only it didnt weigh 6,672 pounds (water weight when full) I would totally want one in my place :) :P

  • awesome setup !

  • thats fukin sick man wish i had that inda money to do that and space

  • Dude this tank is sick wit it!!!! What did you use to seal the inside of the tank?

  • @GeneralGuanaco Thanks mate. See link in the vid description for details.

  • how do you do your partial water changes?

  • @snowboarderrx Syphon out and fill in tank using Prime.

  • That is just an AWSOME TANK!!! Great job, did you put fiberglass where the glass is sitting on? by any chance do you have blue prints on that tank you built? I wanna build one similar but in a much smaller scale.

  • @philolegario Thankyou. Every single part of the tank has been fiberglassed. There is a link to the build process in full detail in the description above.

  • how much a month does that cost to run?

  • @joesimcock No idea. I have never worked it out.

  • dude thats so tight. Nice job and congrats. Also, what music?

  • @pizcobabe Hilltop hoods - nose bleed section. i have it on my channel

  • Mate you build a stunning setup and end up with a swamp should do a reef tank probably cost alot more but worth it

  • @jacklad99 lol..A swamp to you maybe. If you like reef set ups so much, you are welcome to build your own tank and do it as such.( Insert "smacks head" symbol here.)

  • who sings that song?

  • great song whats it called ?

  • @rjcam1 Nose Bleed Section by Hilltop Hoods

  • where did you put it in, your garage of in your home? cool for inside but it might be too big and noisy and hard to clean inside...

  • @JBP46 It is very easy to clean, no noisier than any other tank but it is outside in the barbecue area.

  • did you buy the fish that size? i started building my plywood tank but is having problem with the fiberglass can i use the glue only or do i need to use the cloth to

  • @maytag5000 No. Most of them were around 3-4".

The cloth is the fibreglass. The resin is used to wet it out and bind it together. Without the cloth, you will have far less strength. Ply coated in resin only has no impact strength. The fibreglass cloth gives you this plus far greater structural strength, flexibility and durability. For a bit more detail on the fibreglass process, see the build link in the description above.

  • How much did it cost?

  • Nice tank build! What type of epoxy/liquid rubber did you use for interior? Trying to build a 300 tank out of ply as well this gave me some ideas for it.

  • @greenseverum78 No Liquid rubber. Inside and outside is done with fiberglass and resin. Bote Cote epoxy being the choice of resin. The epoxy resin has been tinted black with a pigment.

  • Nice build! What kind of epoxy did you use to cover the plywood on the inside fo rit to be fish safe?

  • @greenseverum78 Bote Cote Epoxy resin that was tinted black.

  • Very nice work

Great look congrats on a job well done

  • nice build, and nice song, thats how i feel sometmes lol. "this life has turned out nting like i had planned, right now i should have had some land, and some money in my hand, about 50 grand" /dance. ne ways, what did u use to frame the inside of the tank with?

  • bieautiful aquarium but why dont ad more plants and substrate?

  • I prefer it simple. It makes maintenance a breeze.

  • @greenterra nice build, and nice song, thats how i feel sometmes lol. "this life has turned out nting like i had planned, right now i should have had some land, and some money in my hand, about 50 grand" /dance. ne ways, what did u use to frame the inside of the tank with?

  • @xVeRRuCkTx hehe..thanks.The internal supports are from the ply rips at the start. All the timber needed came from the 4 sheets of plywood.

  • thats fucking sick bro

  • very nice tank and just fyi got really happy when i heard hilltop hoods

  • Ace... you have given me ideas for when I move into my new house :)

  • Thanx man loving the tank

  • that tank turned out great, what thickness is the glass, and your fish look awsome.

  • Thanks mate. The glass thickness is 19mm.

  • Wat song is it. Btw ba tabk
