It's not a Chrysler Imperial, it's simply an Imperial Not all Chrysler Plymouth Dealers were Imperial Dealer. Only the best Chysler Plymouth Dealers were allowed to sell Imperials. Calling it a Chrysler is like calling a Lincoln, a Ford Lincoln or a Dodge Charger a Chrysler Dodge Charger. Chrysler first Bankruptsy was an controled Bankruptsy in 1980, a year before this car was even launched. This helped save Chrysler Corporation, not hurt it.
These Imperials are indeed breathtaking in design. For people that have no sense of taste or style, they find the trunk design odd. Also the same people who think that salt and pepper are exotic spices to put on mashed potatoes. Others will quickly agree that the odd placement of the lic plate holder is a visual delight - a feast for the eyes.
PICK IT. A beautiful car. The Imperial ran through the sixties and seventies - the name isn't from "the fifties". In fact, the Imperial was a separate line form Chrysler for many years. The engine was a 318 as it wasn't meant to be a muscle car but rather a cruiser. The 80s years were years marked by "dwonsizing" and "ecomony".
My Grandfather had one. Absolutely beautiful car. The fuel injection computer was a JOKE! It failed about every 9 months or so if I remember correctly.
It's one of the most comfortable cars I've ever driven. It was fun just to be a passenger in that massive machine!
Pick It last ful size rear wheel drive Imperial. Very Rare, If the orginal Fuel Injection System is in tact and working,it is even more rare. Most were converted to a 4 barrel carb. by dealers after the 5 yr/50,000 mile warrenty expired. Value with Fuel Injection $5000, without $3500-4000. A long term Investment Car,not a flip-it.
gorgeous car....made in a time period when cars actually had style, and you could tell them apart a mile away, unlike the econopods of today which all look alike, this car has more style in its hubcap than new cars have in their entire design!
I really Liked the Imperial look during this time. I always wanted the 81, Due to Sunroof. Most I have found are in really bad shape. I'll continue on looking to I find a nice one to add to my collection
It didn't compete with the Lincoln MkV, but the clumsy-looking MkVI- in my opinion, the Imperial is the better-looking car. The Aspen/Volare/Cordoba/Mirada chassis was never much fun to drive though: the transverse torsion bar front suspension gave it a very rubbery feel, and numb, inaccurate steering.
The only bad thing about them was some had fuel injection. They had problems when they came out and no one knew how to repair them. My old boss had one with a garnet red metalic paint and white interior. I still like them.
@jfrey1 Some people just don't appreciate beautiful cars. They just go by the bandwagon opinion that it's a Chrysler and automatically hate it. The Imperial always was a breath taking Automobile. I would love to see the Imperial brought back, but not based on the 300C. Something completely new.
First off, you should know that this is not a "Chrysler" Imperial. Simply "Imperial". This car did NOT put Chrysler Corperation into bankruptcy, rather the management of CC before Lee Iacocca.
Get your info straight and stop misinforming people. This car is not typical 80's styling, rather , a unique design that set it apart from the pack - an activity that the Imperial marque has always been quietly famous for. Seems 80s to you in retrospect, but was ahead of its time when new.
PICK IT The 81-83 Imperial is very rare and competed with the 79-85 Eldorado and 80-83 Mark VI. This Imperial did not put Chrysler into bankruptcy. This Imperial was the car Lee Iacocca decided to put into production as the corporate flagship to rebuild Chrysler's image after bankruptcy. Very solid hand built car, fit & finish amazing and very extensive quality control including road test. The EFI 5.2 V8 is incredibly smooth and quiet and torque flight transmission shifts silky smooth.
A re-skinned Cordoba/Mirada and those cars looked better and were more reliable with their non-fuel injection motors.

This would not compete with the Mark 5. The last year for the Mark 5 was 1979. This would have competed with the Mark 6.

Pick it. You can make a 600hp stroker 318 for about two grand.

Pick it! If you can get past the awkward location of the rear plate (should have been in the bumper, Mr. Iacocca!), this is a great car!

@jfrey1 Got the facts to back it up? It was a nearly 2 ton car using a 318 cu engine. Nice looking, but slooow.
