I listened to all the other live performances with other drummers, but this one is THE BEST! Everytime I heard, I gotta stand up and just bump my head to this jam!
agreed with you Ami G ! with all respect for Breakbeatuksp point, Gerald is not overplaying, it's just so groovy that he could have play anything he wants in there...which he is doin actually, he and mary are just pyromaniacs in this wonderful band + i guess they are uplift by the lyrics, they do mean a lot! And maybe he could have got fired... for other reasons than musically ones. Who can say he's not serving this music? peace out ;-)
@Breakbeatuksp Naw not everyone is a idiot there are some logical opinions on here about this performance .
You do have to admit and no disrespect to Gerald(because he paved the way for many "Gospel based" players) but he was overplaying on this one performance...like if there was another less known drummer up there instead of Gerald I know he would've gotten fired for sure!
@Moog167 why do you feel as though he was overplaying...as the drummer your job besides keeping the pocket is taking the intensity to a higher level...he did that...if u look at the band and watch mary they all goin hard towards the end of the song, he made it hype...there wasnt anything that he did in the course of the performance that wasnt musical or was placed anywhere that would take away from the music.
@STIXAHOY Completely agree. Heyward can play the hell out of his kit and that's been established, but he's definitely not playing the track here. Shoulda dialed it down a notch or two.
i thought some of his fills were a lil over the top too, but he was having a ball playing the drums and the song still grooved, and at the end of the day thats what its all about so i say PLAY ON GERALD!!
@wardrumma Thats' cool, except that Gerald don't 'play on' in this case. Stuff like 1:35-1:38 is what got his ass fired. You ain't a partner, you the drummer, don't matter how long you been here..Don't be tryin' to show what a great drummer you are during the vocal, man, especially after the singer asks you not to...(if you do, don't fuck it up)..& don't argue about it!
@bigxjon91 I don't explain 'em, I just know it happened: Gerald was putting riffs in that he was asked not to, argued about it, and got fired. Whether it was specifically this riff or not, it was riffs like this. I called attention to this one because it's a hair out of the pocket .
@bigxjon91 Sorry, I can't rat out the guy, he's in the middle of all this. That's the best I can do in good faith. All I know first-hand is that the groove got stronger after Gerald left, but obviously, that's subject to debate.
Gerald was killin' on this set! Yeah his fills was a little over the top, but Gerald nailed it! And THAT,S why Gerald Hayward is of one the baddest in the RnB/Gospel game along with Teddy, Marvin, Nisan, John & Aaron!
This song is just supposed to groove REAL heavy with those 8th notes. Heyward messed up a bit by putting complex fills in the wrong spots. Great skills though.
yeah apparently before the gig mary j blige told him he was playing to much at her other gigs and told him to tone it down!! and he want the other way and took the piss .... then got fired ....... then months after was back working for her again lol
i have that problem also. i tend to overplay live sometimes. been really practicing on playing the song, instead of doing complex fills all the time. afterall, i want to keep the gig i have. if they tell me to show off, then fine hehe
Respect to Gerald....He's played for everyone. He started out long before a lot of these young cats did. He may not be as quick as some of the newer cats are now....but guess what. Dude stay working cause he ALWAYS on Point. And isn't that what really matters? Lots of people post sheds...etc...on youtube plyaing for free. If you see gerald....9 times out of 10....he's getting paid. Shout out to the man.
its not about money my friend, its about the respect and reputation that he built regarding many different artists, thats why he's up there right now, getting paid ;)
Gerald is just doing what he does best, and that's blaze!! It's his killer groove that's drivin' mary's band. Yeah his fill's were complex, but he didn't lose mary's groove!
it's a shame to see so many poor musicians commenting here. Whether or not his drumming is to your taste, its important to recognise the style of this music (hip-hop/gospel).Gerald does exactly that - he infuses sick grooves with gospel fills.I think people need to do some research before commenting. For anyone out there who believes 'less is more': you're not wrong, but Mr Heyward probably plays THE best straight 8 groove in the world today. Considering that, surely he knows what this song needs.
it's like they've never seen gospel drumming before. its meant to be very elaborate live, if you were listening to a studio version the chances are it wouldnt be a live acoustic drummer. gerald has a rad groove.
o.k. for the last time, gerald has been working since the 80's , how many of you can say the same thing? style, interpretation, passion, are all important, but at the end of the day it's what the artist wants and can you give them what they want. if not your career is cut short. technique is great, but it doesn't keep the gigs. it's about the love of the music, it will come out in your playing, if the artist likes it your good if not ,your out of work period.
i think for the most part, he did a great job with maintaining the energy in certain parts. THe problem is, he threw a lot of complex fills and odd rhythms during parts where it just really needed to drive.
well well!!!! Mary is out of this world! The best live performance of this most groovy song!! Oh! by the way!
Gerald is the anchor in this track! without his feel and his positive pulse Mary could not have brought out what she did! Credit to the bass player for holding out on the groove and not breaking into a Marcus Miller/Meshell style! Unbeleivable
Man Who Care, That Shits Poping, Ima Drummer man And That Shiz Is Good Aiite, Soo If Yo Aint No Drummer Dont Say Shiz About overplaying aiite, and hey they were having fun that what its all about;)
Theres no such thing as overplaying, just fills that dont fit and the fills that I heard fit fairly nice and then some. When being a live drummer for any singer or performer you really need to be able to pick what does and doesnt fit and when you do things. G.H. just killed it.
Overplaying Exists....It means when a drummer/musician adds to much a it doesn't sound right! The phrasing of the fills,dynamics..etc! There's lots of ways musicians can over play! Saying Overplaying doesn't exist was just stupid! some of those fills sounded too long!
No it wasnt stupid, the only thing stupid was dissing someone else's opinion...there are different kinds of musicians, there are those who can play just what the music needs and stay in pocket, and then there are some who can do that and then some(i.e. G. H.) that can do that and have fun with it at the same time, thats not knockin anyone else's style. But in my opinion it doesnt exist because it comes down to individual style and composure.
Its cool man, I just see you it a lot and it bothers me, especially on youtube, its a shame every disagreement doesnt end as peacefully as this one, live well!
Well because see we're open minded true musicians...because at the end of the day! We do what we do,"For The Love Of The Music" and we all need and deserve Respect!
He's not overplaying, because there's nothing to get in the way of. It's overplaying when you get in the way of the other players and disrupt things. Besides the main melody, which repeats almost the entire song, there is little going on.
I'm sure they gave him a pass to shows off his chops before the show. Probably because they knew how boring the song would otherwise be.
totally agree, Gerald kills it. he plays it perfectly just trying to play to the intensity of the vocals. all fills were techical and clean. well done
you guys make me laugh. gerald has been playing for mary for years. why? because he gives her what she wants in every performance. as well as everyone else hes worked with. yes its about the artist, but also about making the music feel good. besides if the artist wants it play what they want.
my goodness.....the comments on this vid are just amazing...i'm sure that most of u who are sayin he overplayed dont even know shit about drums (no offence). both fills were well played and non were "off" timing. U could tell that mary wanted to increase the intensity of that part from 2:50-2:55 and gerald did that...and for the dude that said thats why he got lashed of the M.J Blige gig, why dont u get ur facts right. He's Up there and the rest of us aren't even close, remember that!
Come on guys First of all the 1:29 fill fit perfectly. 2:55 he was just following her and helping her make a better impact. Besides if he is "overplaying" her thats not his fault, the sound guy should be turning him down a little bit.
i think that gerald played out marys voice at times but i think the performance overall and lexuspimpin was right about the fill at 2:55 was out of place
the fill at 1:29 was out of place and sounded horrible!...it sounded like the drums droped out of the song...and then came back in! Not good! and the one at 2:50-2:55....was out of place!
Hey i agree with you ...But that 2:50-2:55 was needed ..watch Mary @ 2:45, she wanted it to go up and he backed her up. Because he did, it went to another level. '' Watch the artist @ all times'' , is rule #2 with ''Less is more''. ...I'm surprised you didn't notice
No its not so much that he's over playing,... but his phrasing is horribly OUT OF PLACE, and does not go with the natural feel of the song,.. maybe if he sat his ass still, he could get the job done!!!
I think this one was a simple song and he should have played straight grooves. And he needs far more musically challenging players and composers to use his full potential. He tried to do too much here and it didnt sound good at all.
Sorry boys I think he overplays, dont get me wrong hes amazing drummer but Im more of a groove player. But hey If you can get paid for it and get away with it why not I guess ha ha
bro, this guy is nasty good and is just trying to keep Mary feeling it and just copying her dynamics. Trust me, they didn't need a full band for that... they could have just used a sound track or something, but it just wouldn't feel the same so there was a need for a real hip hop drummer and he DIDN'T over play..u just don't know how to feel music.(groove player;my ass)
the great thing about mary is that on her upbeat songs she has a real sense of rhythm and so sometimes she sings the lyrics with the drum beat...i guess as a drummer i notice it more and really appreciate it. She does it in family affair on this line...
'With a great track pumpin', everybody's jumpin'
Going ahead and twist your back and get your body bumpin'
I told you leave your situations at the door
So grab somebody and get your ass on the dance floor'
I dont think the part were he plays is meant for pocket. I think he was following Mary J. idk. But it all fits together in the song. Plus this song is kinda ... hype and stuff so I thought it was all good.
ha ha you guys make me laugh. yes the drummer is amazing without a doubt. but the comments about mary for god sake people she is one of the best in the business. if she was so damm good why would so many artists want to work with her. come on think about it
its Loren (dont know the last name) but you are right its the same in the Tony Royster Church video. I got him at myspace. Check my site: myspace[dot]com/rmg2409
and whoever said gerald is a nobody obviously dont know anything. the guy is one of the tightest around. but he should stick to playing like this when its needed. there are so many other tracks that gerald plays on that just blow my mind more so than this. because its needed and its musical....not just everything he knows in every bar.
I don't know man, he IS showing off but it's all in the pocket and nothing stood out as sounding bad or taking away from the music. He is drawing attention away from Mary, but not enough to blind you from her awesome performance. I like this show. Kudos to him for having the balls to not just play a groove the whole time. :)
its funny cus gerald is one of my favourite players and my favourite groove player his main intention in this track was not to play groove (although he does) but to make this performance about him, so much so that this video is named GERALD with mary j blige when the open credit of the song just says mary j blige. doesnt even mention geralds name. and you may not know this but gerald didnt leave mary j, he was fired for doing exactly this. basically what im sayin is there is a time and a place.
i saw him at drummer live last year!! he was really good!! MJBTheGreatestSinger, she wouldnt be any good without a beat!! and he is doing an amazing job, id like to see u try and play like that!
why is anyone posting about mary on this? read the title again, this is ALL about Mr. Heyward doin what he does best... destroying sets leaving your jaws on the ground.
MJBTHEGREATESTSINGER, gerald is not a 'nobody'. Thats a pretty ignorant comment to make. Especially since no one sees YOU playing or singing behind major recording artists. You should really think before you say things like that.
This comment would come from a dumb-ass vocalist. Any singer who doesn't appreciate their band, won't go far in tours or live gigs. Good luck w/ thattho :) lol
I agree with you "exceslsior03". This clip is for the drummers and musicians. And "mjbTHEGREATESTSINGER", gerald is not a 'nobody'. Thats a pretty ignorant comment to make. Especially since no one sees YOU playing or singing behind major recording artists.
I think it's hilarious all of the comments regarding Mary's talent. Haven't you realized by now that record companies don't care about talent, it's all about selling units! Half of the young artists out there today are putting out garbage (including Alicia Keys) because record execs think it will sell. Cut Mary some slack, she may not be the most talented but she is singing from her heart. A lot of people can relate to her which has been a factor in her popularity and longevity in the industry.
I promise, I think this bitch was high, drunk, or both before she went on stage that night on this silly ass show. Maybe K-Ci gave her another beatdown and she was buying "boulders" of crack again. LOL!! I can't wait for her label to drop her ass, and it's hilarious that her single "just fine" flopped so badly on the Hot 100...lol...you can't force the Pop Mainstream audience to digest your crap Mary!
OKAY....yall need to understand something...Mary was marketed by the labels to become a new aretha, but for the hip hop youth who were growing tired of REAL r&b artists, and mary never had vocal training. Im not a fan of hers since I think she is one of the poorest excuses of soul music but i understand where her fans come from
i dont understand hype about mary j blige cause she always screams and acts crazy in her songs on stage. i prefer regina belle and anita baker's voices over hers anyday of the week. but lets try to all get alone though, even if marcusrob02 is being a pest
Even IF she's one of the BETTER artists of today (which tells you how ridiculous toilet-bound music is today), it STILL doesn't excuse the fact that she lacks talent all around. ANYBODY who THINKS she can sing needs to listen to R&B artists from previous decades. Hell, even her peers like Shanice and Deborah Cox and Fantasia have REAL vocal talent!!!
Each time I waste my time watching this gutter shit, I see more and MORE things about it that's utterly horrible, disgusting, and shows me how bad Mary J. Blige has always been as an artist.
Normally, I would say 1 out of 2 ain't bad..in her case, she lacks both the skills and voice....she's just going deep in her throat and singing from the throat and nasals....so in her case, 0 out of 2 is indeed bad...very bad. LOL.
Gerald is a great drummer and it's great to hear his flair in everything he plays but in my opinion this performance didn't sound as tight as it could have. I deffinitly couldn't do any better.
i find myself doing the heyward bounce more and more u gotta feel the music(or do a crazy fill before u crash lol)

you guys make me laugh. gerald has been playing for mary for years. why? because he gives her what she wants in every performance. as well as everyone else hes worked with. yes its about the artist, but also about making the music feel good. besides if the artist wants it play what they want.
frankcaton 2 years ago
my goodness.....the comments on this vid are just amazing...i'm sure that most of u who are sayin he overplayed dont even know shit about drums (no offence). both fills were well played and non were "off" timing. U could tell that mary wanted to increase the intensity of that part from 2:50-2:55 and gerald did that...and for the dude that said thats why he got lashed of the M.J Blige gig, why dont u get ur facts right. He's Up there and the rest of us aren't even close, remember that!
Ace3mb 3 years ago 2
Come on guys First of all the 1:29 fill fit perfectly. 2:55 he was just following her and helping her make a better impact. Besides if he is "overplaying" her thats not his fault, the sound guy should be turning him down a little bit.

i think its awesome! way to go gerald heyward!

man talk about over playing..... jesus what the hell ever happened to playing in the pocket?

Oh yeah you're right, there aren't opinions, only facts.

i think that gerald played out marys voice at times but i think the performance overall and lexuspimpin was right about the fill at 2:55 was out of place
KEASTONBWOI 3 years ago
i think da only fill dat was out of place was at 2:55 but da one at 1:29 fell rite in
lexuspimpin 3 years ago
it sounded fine.
callmesteeze 3 years ago
the fill at 1:29 was out of place and sounded horrible!...it sounded like the drums droped out of the song...and then came back in! Not good! and the one at 2:50-2:55....was out of place!
He over plays everything....less is more!
ARisenServant 3 years ago
Hey i agree with you ...But that 2:50-2:55 was needed ..watch Mary @ 2:45, she wanted it to go up and he backed her up. Because he did, it went to another level. '' Watch the artist @ all times'' , is rule #2 with ''Less is more''. ...I'm surprised you didn't notice
rayraybrin 3 years ago
Yeah man!....your right! My bad!
i know I always watch the artist when I play gigs! But you have to admit! he does over play???
ARisenServant 3 years ago
h o mary jblige your soo good mary mary mary J Mary Mary Notoriopus ohhh Notorious 2009 is iout MAry J size

i love gerald heyward but his filling is not in tune with the song..
Drummerspaz 3 years ago
No its not so much that he's over playing,... but his phrasing is horribly OUT OF PLACE, and does not go with the natural feel of the song,.. maybe if he sat his ass still, he could get the job done!!!

LOL........I'll tell'em....

Who am I to judge...
He's got the gig, and I don't.
Amen.

i appreciate both viewpoints but i dont think hes overplaying here. hes just feelin it
dangerousdinosaur 3 years ago
This is why he got lashed of the Mary J Blige gig. It sounds messy
20sanfoe 3 years ago
At the end of the day, he obviously got the approval of the MD xD
alexmathew09 3 years ago
Hes a very skilled player, but i dont like his style.
He put too much stuff, where less is needed. And the fills sounds out o place.
byLivio 3 years ago
I think this one was a simple song and he should have played straight grooves. And he needs far more musically challenging players and composers to use his full potential. He tried to do too much here and it didnt sound good at all.
saqib09 3 years ago
Everyones entitled to their opinion man. Hes good but just the way I feel. Im not getting into an argument of what a groove player is
hytgggg 3 years ago
Sorry boys I think he overplays, dont get me wrong hes amazing drummer but Im more of a groove player. But hey If you can get paid for it and get away with it why not I guess ha ha
hytgggg 3 years ago
bro, this guy is nasty good and is just trying to keep Mary feeling it and just copying her dynamics. Trust me, they didn't need a full band for that... they could have just used a sound track or something, but it just wouldn't feel the same so there was a need for a real hip hop drummer and he DIDN'T over play..u just don't know how to feel music.(groove player;my ass)
Drummaguy10 3 years ago
the great thing about mary is that on her upbeat songs she has a real sense of rhythm and so sometimes she sings the lyrics with the drum beat...i guess as a drummer i notice it more and really appreciate it. She does it in family affair on this line...
'With a great track pumpin', everybody's jumpin'
Going ahead and twist your back and get your body bumpin'
I told you leave your situations at the door
So grab somebody and get your ass on the dance floor'

gerald overplays a bit no? anyone agree that that 4 bar fill is a bit over the top?
lindenlinden 3 years ago
I dont think the part were he plays is meant for pocket. I think he was following Mary J. idk. But it all fits together in the song. Plus this song is kinda ... hype and stuff so I thought it was all good.
MichealJohnsonJAZZ 3 years ago
there is very fine line between a monster and overplay dude
gerald is defo a monster

Gerald was not perfoming he was jamin with the song just in his own world having his solo
Kidzps3 3 years ago
ha ha you guys make me laugh. yes the drummer is amazing without a doubt. but the comments about mary for god sake people she is one of the best in the business. if she was so damm good why would so many artists want to work with her. come on think about it
nigiellis 3 years ago
Mary J is the headliner, the focus yet Gerald is given freedom to do what ever he wants. Thats respect to his playing

and whoever said gerald is a nobody obviously dont know anything. the guy is one of the tightest around. but he should stick to playing like this when its needed. there are so many other tracks that gerald plays on that just blow my mind more so than this. because its needed and its musical....not just everything he knows in every bar.
dandadrummerman 3 years ago
I don't know man, he IS showing off but it's all in the pocket and nothing stood out as sounding bad or taking away from the music. He is drawing attention away from Mary, but not enough to blind you from her awesome performance. I like this show. Kudos to him for having the balls to not just play a groove the whole time. :)
ssnatcherss 3 years ago
its funny cus gerald is one of my favourite players and my favourite groove player his main intention in this track was not to play groove (although he does) but to make this performance about him, so much so that this video is named GERALD with mary j blige when the open credit of the song just says mary j blige. doesnt even mention geralds name. and you may not know this but gerald didnt leave mary j, he was fired for doing exactly this. basically what im sayin is there is a time and a place.
dandadrummerman 3 years ago 2
who ever said is gerald is a nobody is dum. his pocket is crazy. he already a legend and he from bk. let me hear u challenge a drummer from bk. im 1

MJBTHEGREATESTSINGER, gerald is not a 'nobody'. Thats a pretty ignorant comment to make. Especially since no one sees YOU playing or singing behind major recording artists. You should really think before you say things like that.
yamahazil 3 years ago
This comment would come from a dumb-ass vocalist. Any singer who doesn't appreciate their band, won't go far in tours or live gigs. Good luck w/ thattho :) lol
romeo282000 3 years ago

LOL!! I can't wait for her label to drop her ass, and it's hilarious that her single "just fine" flopped so badly on the Hot 100...lol...you can't force the Pop Mainstream audience to digest your crap Mary!
marcusrob02 4 years ago
damn dude... she rip you off or somethin?
calm the fuck down already, shit.
liennto 4 years ago
OKAY....yall need to understand something...Mary was marketed by the labels to become a new aretha, but for the hip hop youth who were growing tired of REAL r&b artists, and mary never had vocal training. Im not a fan of hers since I think she is one of the poorest excuses of soul music but i understand where her fans come from
nickdr316 4 years ago
Does she have to "holla" all the time? She looks street, sounds pathetic
demrob83 4 years ago
i dont understand hype about mary j blige cause she always screams and acts crazy in her songs on stage. i prefer regina belle and anita baker's voices over hers anyday of the week. but lets try to all get alone though, even if marcusrob02 is being a pest
rr103306 4 years ago
Even IF she's one of the BETTER artists of today (which tells you how ridiculous toilet-bound music is today), it STILL doesn't excuse the fact that she lacks talent all around. ANYBODY who THINKS she can sing needs to listen to R&B artists from previous decades. Hell, even her peers like Shanice and Deborah Cox and Fantasia have REAL vocal talent!!!
marcusrob02 4 years ago
Each time I waste my time watching this gutter shit, I see more and MORE things about it that's utterly horrible, disgusting, and shows me how bad Mary J. Blige has always been as an artist.

Gerald Heyward baby!!! heaviest right foot in the buisness!!
pdrums777 4 years ago
she got no skills, but a good voice.
RWIron 4 years ago
Normally, I would say 1 out of 2 ain't bad..in her case, she lacks both the skills and voice....she's just going deep in her throat and singing from the throat and nasals....so in her case, 0 out of 2 is indeed bad...very bad. LOL.
