There IS a substitute for class, it's called truth. Something Mr. Mandelson has a hard time grasping. It's what MOST allegedly upper class british people lack. Truth and humility. It's why America beat britain in 2 wars, and can now count the queen and the prime minister as pets.

The British won due to the fact that they completed their objectives; defend Canada by killing the Americans who tried to invade.
The outcome of the treaty of Ghent highlights the blatant fact that america took a backward step from the Northern Territories and allowed Britain to rain supreme in the empire. so you basically have won only one war with the British, a war that our king really didn't give a sh*t about. Say what you want about american history books,Ill probably agree, but its the individual who decides what he learns after the age of 18. And I have a PHD, so fire away if you think you can keep up... By saying the USA "came late" to WW2(or even 1), is to over look a simple fact. The USA wasnt binded into ANY pacts,and germany hadnt declared war.. WHY would the US get involved?

You conveniently forget that apart from England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and the rest of the allied forces were fighting well before you got involved. And the uncomfortable truth is the Russians broke down the Nazis and even Germans will admit that.

As far as the class issue? It was the same attitude the ruling class took towards america, that they took towards "uncivilized" India, zimbabwe, zululand. Class driven economics/foreign policy led to the subjugation of half the world, to the benefit of the same ruling "class", not the average briton, and certainly NOT the people of the occupied countries. The long term damage is tremendous

In fact, it can be argued that british class is responsible for most of the worlds problems today. From India/Pakistan, to Iraq and iran.
If the colonies in america were treated like members of the british empire, the separation would never have happened

Washington failed to get a British admiral post, Jefferson--despite being highly intellectual and admirable in many ways--was a spend-thrift and slave-owner. Franklin may have been the most admirable, but the intent and the means by which your great sovereign nation was forged were dubious and behind closed doors. As much of an empire as Britain has arisen.
