I used to walk by Jake every Saturday morning at the same time on east 56th street where I lived in the late 80's and he always walked with his head down so I never bothered him. My father knew him and told Jake that I never acknowledged him because I was afraid I might piss him off. Jake said, "oh no, he doesn't have to be nervous I'm just always in thought." I finally had the chance to say hello to him and from then on it was always,, hey kid how ya doin?
this guy is my hero... Jake LaMotta was not the greatest boxer in the world but he was tough and feared no man, he wanted to fight Joe Louis but wasnt big enough as he was middleweight (before he ballooned up to light heavy) he used to shrink himself down to middleweight as he had trouble making weight alot and still fought 10-15rounds, yeah he was a vicious cunt outside the ring and dont condome his wife beating but there's no denoying the man is a legend in the boxing world!!!
Jakes personal life may have been screwed up however the man has admitted he made mistakes and he owned up to them like a man should . He's 90 years old and my favorite boxer he just recently got married I wish him the best . The man fought ray Robinson 6 times and didnt go down and hes all there mentally I wish him the best amazing he outlived Joe Fraizer
i read his book not long ago, 'raging bull' a great read, at some points in his book i didnt like him, he did alot of bad things in his youth but i very much respect him as a boxer, the only guy to ever beat sugar ray robinson, that deserves alot of respect
@comets00 - just for the record, Jake was not the only guy to beat Sugar Ray Robinson. He was the FIRST to beat him...but not the last. He later lost to Gene Fulmer, Carmen Basilio, Joey Maxim and others..although he was well past his prime.
I'm only 23 and when I was about 16 I used to purely look at fighters records and judge them on that. For somebody as old as this to still be happy and to have lived such a life and fought like he did in the ring though is a mentality he must have had throughout his life. I love watching interviews with great men, inspirational video.
Great job with the interview. I am a life long boxing fan who used to collect old fight films, books, magazines etc... Dabbled around in the sport a bit to. Once in gets into your blood it never leaves you. I'm 53 and still workout on the bags and spar a bit. What a thrill it must have been for you to meet JAke. Most people don't realize ho different boxers are from other athletes...the old timers at least. Great guys. Many as gentle as lambs. Again...nice job.
@oldschoolsaint Sorry, I didn't see your comment. That wasn't actually me interviewing Jake, it was just on a DVD of mine and I thought I'd put it up on here. You're dead right about boxers being a special breed, though (especially the old timers). And as you say, often most of them are good guys too. :)
Very sharp even at that age. Dropping a lot of wisdom.

Ive seen some interviews where Jake sounds punchy, but here he sounds pretty freakn good for a 90 yera old fighter with over 100 fights
