There must be some good coming out of psychiatry, these videos are very biased, and none indicate any postive cases whereby 'patients" quality of life has been improved. Talk therapy has shown to be very effective for improving the life of people who have mental abnormal issues (due to it's plasticity). I believe that most, if not all mental illness can be overcome by improving relationships within the affected individuals' life. People need to be more educated.

If we want to progress in treating mental illness, the answer isn't to write off failed efforts and conclude from these past failures that future treatment is impossible. I'll give you an example: Someone has long term cronic headaches. He has been taking Advil for 2 years and it dulls the pain and gives him relief for that headache. He goes on for 2 years taking Advil and it basically dulls the pain. The Advil now doesn't work anymore, body to used to it. Doctor finds out he has had a calcium effeciency the whole time which caused his headaches. All the Advil did was dull the pain. It did not handle the SOURCE of the problem, therefore the problem persisted.

Depression isnt a disease nor does it need dangerous psychiatric drugs that have no curative powers. Psychosis is caused by psychiatric drugs. Mental illness per say does NOT exist. Diagnosis in general medicine is not much more "Scientific" than diagnosis in psychiatry.

And in terms of evidence, consider this: did you know that of all of the treatments in all of the fields of medicine, the one with the most evidence is ECT for treatment of major depression? It's true.

As in psychiatry, diagnosis in other fields of medicine comes down to the clinical picture.

Is the patient sore over the area of bone corresponding to the white line on that xray? If yes, maybe it is a fracture. If no, probably not. Does the patient with the high white cell count look sick? Do they have a fever? Are they taking medication? Sometimes, you just KNOW a certain patient has a particular illness, even though the tests all come back negative. No test is perfect.

As a medical practitioner I take exception to this. Medicine in general is NOT an exact science. It isnt even a science at all. It's an art with scientific elements.

In areas of medicine other than psychiatry, biochemical and radiological tests do exist. But they arent exact either!!! Its rare to have a given test result and be able to say, "this means one thing and one thing only" or "this is proof that patient A has or hasnt got disease X".

It is true you can have 'general anxiety' in the sense that you can have panic attacks, but it's not measurable. It's not really mental illness as much as it's a mental exhaustion and bad habit. But people can and do get better and get over their fears.
