  • I like thinking of calories like money. I can only spend 1700 to maintain.

  • I lost 100 lbs last year just from exercising and cutting back on food and changing the type of food that I ate. But I'm still one of those people who LOVES to eat just because I like the taste of food.

After losing all that weight; I went on a 2,500-3,000 calorie diet after I went to start trying to build muscle. I dropped that down to about 2,000 calorie diet again to help me lose(more) weight and not lose muscle.

I still get cranky sometimes when I can't eat as much as I want to at times.

  • counting calories is not fun hehe

  • @FiresJake it may not be fun, but it sure as hell is a lot more fun and simple than following a raw vegan diet, a low carb diet, a low fat diet....and so on... Sure, I could eat low calorie foods and eat a slightly larger volume, but I'd rather eat less food, not food with less taste^^

  • i can'tunderstant why someone how is weight loss expert has to cover up his upper body all the time ??? his body image is his tool to prove to us what he is saying is right

  • well, im 160 lbs and i take in about 1500 a day, if i eat in the morning like a beanut butter sandwitch then at launch eat another one becuase thats what i love to eat for some reason, then i come home and eat a small pizza to my self, will all that go right to storage or will it be used even if im not doing any thing, like im walking class to class at school so the sandwitches are getting worked off, but the pizza is just sitting there in my belly when i get home, will that just go to fat?

  • @BodyPerformanceTV steve i don't understand why on nutrition label everything has a measurement except vitamins and menerals especially vitamins its in percent like 6% calcium or 10% vitamin A what does this mean? Aren't vitamins and minerals suppose to be measure in IU?

  • @IPWNBXRmash you weigh 160, eat only 1500 calories a day which consists of peanut butter sandwiches and pizza? Sounds very unhealthy.

  • @787Matatan I answered your question on my 4-23-10 BlogTalkRadio show. Go to BlogTalkRadio and search Steve Turano. The show can also be downloaded from iTunes. The most recent shows can also be heard on my website home page (at the bottom) once it uploads. Tell a friend!

  • what if puberty is making you eat alot? will i need to burn more calories or will my body use them? im 13 by the way

  • @NavySealsDucky If you're not over weight I wouldn't worry. And even if you are a little growing uses up lots of calories.

  • My god Steve! Your bicep looks friggin' huge in this vid.

  • Thanks!

  • Sex? Need more, lots more!!! MORE!!!!

  • muscles need energy to grow.

  • lol, good one. Pretty comon sense. Thats what I do. Just found out recently my body fat is going up quickly so Im just going to start drinking reduce fat milk cause I havent changed anything in my diet just went from drinking reduce to whole milk. FYI - im a hardgainer ready to cut as soon as I gain 5 more lbs :-)

  • Chaaarge you can build that muscle bulk as you lose fat you know. 30 years ago every bought into the bulking muscle- higher calorie idea. I know that having more lean muscle mass WILL burn some extra calories, but I don't think it's as high as some have claimed..AND, as Steve pointed out to me, it really only burns a few more calories while your up and doing something...cardio, walking..whatever. It doesn't burn all sorts of calories while your sitting and watching TV as many once claimed.

  • steve, I was wondering if it wouldn't be a simpler approach if I just focused on building bigger muscles all the time, even if I want to lose fat? more muscles burn more calories right? I would like to get my six pack back, but I'm thinking of actually bulking first to make it easier in the long run

  • it looks like ur in good shape strength wise, but if u are an expert on this, why do u still have a considerable amount of "baggage"

  • LOL! Go to my You Tube site, page down and take a good, long look. Dude, if that's baggage I'll take it anyday. And so would most other people!!!!!

  • lol baggage?

gotta stop concluding to the visual appearance of people man.

Seriously, if it was considered baggage then A LOT of people are aiming to result with "a baggage".

    anyways, love your videos Steve

    keep them coming ;)

  • i already apologized for my comments. i admitted to judging too quickly. i looked at his full body shot on his profile and admitted to be wrong. get off my case because i know what i did and said and know that it was wrong okay?

  • All good ; )

  • Keep up the good work!

  • this guy knows what hi is talking about

i follow all his coments and is working for me

  • if larger people need more calories, then how are we supposed to lose weight :S im confused....

  • You just consume less calories than you need to maintain your weight. It is the deficit that matters not the absolute number of calories.

  • yes they do need more calories, but at the end of the day you need a calorie deficite, thats all that matter!

great explanation steve!my cat understood that :)

  • simply, exercise

loose fat by exercising. don't care too much about calories. calories are your energy.

and more muscle mass means higher metabolism

  • larger people need more calories becuase they burn calories quicker. so eat less and exercise more.

  • Males are larger than females. Males have more muscle than females. Therefore more calories are required.

  • Sex as in gender, Male or Woman.

  • u gotta hav fun whether ur losing weight or not ;)

  • hahahahahhahahaahahha dummie of the week goes to...........jda4160!!!!!!

    CONGRATULATIONS!

  • 5 months ago..i meant getting in bed with someone and fucking their brains out..no need to waste your time commenting on me

  • Coward. Go somewhere else for that. Pure health and fitness here on Steve's videos!

  • wow everyone took what i said so wrong. what the fuck guys? theres no reason to be all uptight about it.

  • It can vary. Man or woman? Active or sedentary? In shape or out of shape. Want to gain weight, lose or stay the same? Young or old? As a GENERAL rule 150 lbs x 10 calories/lb = 1500 calories.

  • I just got a question I weight about 150 pounds How much calories do I need to eat

  • im 17 years old and im about 175 to 180 or so and i eat around 2500 cals a day well maybe a little bit more but not much. i do push ups crunches and switch them up every 5min and about 20min total and about 20min arobics every morining. then i just walk to any place that i have to go to which ends up being several miles a day but im not losing weight i do have quite a bit of muscle but not in the areas that i really want what am i doing wrong?

  • maybe u do not eat protein. cause if u eat lots of protein ( carefull cause food with a lot of protein have a lot of fat :S ). Eat a lot of protein and vitamins and there we go :)

  • callories arn't needed at all i can eat maybe 1 thing with 100-200 cals and still get by inthe day as if i had eaten 1100 as somepeople liek todo. yet i cant lose weight even though i excersize. i figure thats wierd.

  • this is because u are sending your body into starvation mode and it is holding onto any calories it gets which makes losing weight difficult.

  • Steve doesn't really answer the question in this video. There is a much better way to know how many calories you need. Go here

Put all that back together in your browser and have a look.

  • check out my calorie video

  • thank you for these videos!! thanks to your help i lost 70 pounds!!! thank you!

  • I never realy question'd that as everything I read said "at rest". Anyways, makes sense what you stated.

  • You need to weight train as cardio only really burns calories while doing cardio, while if you add muscle you will also burn calories at rest

  • People believe this but it's not quite true. If you have lots of muscle you will burn more calories once you're active and using those muscles. You don't burn that many more calories if you're muscular but not doing anything.

  • to follow up on this. if you wish to burn more fat calories throughout the day when your not working. I believe if you do cardio with intensity. You will continue to burn slightly more calories for a period up to 24 hours after the workout.

  • True. Exercise and eating are very similar. If you change either one it can affect your weight. Most people don't exercise so there BMR is darn close to their RMR.. Please give me an idea of what type of exercise you do and I'll give you an idea of how many calories you're burning. We subtract this number from your caloric intake and this will be your RMR.

  • Well, I'm 5' 3", 118 pounds. Pretty much the only exercise I get is through cardio so I don't have a lot of muscle. I walk 8.5 miles everyday and on weekends burn 1400 at the gym running. I only eat about 1500 to 1700 calories a day. And my weight has pretty much stay the same over the last 7 or 8 months. I feel like my metabolism is really lagging. I'm not really looking to lose weight but shouldn't my metabolism be burning more than just 1500 to 1700 calories a day without so much effort?

  • Yeah, but that doesn't take into account my activity level. If I ate the same things I usually eat and did absolutely nothing that whole week, then wouldn't I gain weight?

  • The easiest way is to 1) Look back at the last 3-6 months and see if you're gaining weight. 2) Write down what you've been eating the last week and total the calories. If you haven't been gaining weight this is your RMR.

  • How do you figure out RMR?
