@PrivateBuckwheat I stumbled upon the track again. For anyone who is curious, it is "The Devil is in the Details" by Boards of Canada on their album Geogaddi.
It's beautiful in the way it mimics natural growth patterns. It looks kind of like a jellyfish or a flower. Very nice.. What an undertaking. It must have cost a fortune... Its size must make it an amazing experience at almost any distance. I wonder what the google sattellite pics look like....?
Wow this piece is just sublime. I can't help but think of jellyfish and how fragile they are when I see this. I was wondering if the circular hollow underneath the main body of work is also an intentionally constructed part of the final work? Either way, this sculpture is nothing short of beautiful. I'm looking forward to seeing more like this in the future. (Now I just have to find a way to see one in person!)
And how does she change? I jsut see her rippling in the wind. Plenty of sculptures utilise wind for movement, even more so than this. It looks ok but it is nothing amazing
The people with the negative remarks obviously can't appreciate sculpture for what it's worth - disregard them - they're not worth it - it's a beautiful piece of art - I feel sorry for their narrow vision - let's hope they never reproduce....
@bubb1egir1 it wont change the fact that it's just a fishing net in the midle of the sky, but it wont chanche the fact that someone had the creativity and will to do something like that
Why is the artistic community at odds? Have we learned nothing from the works of Picasso, Monet, O'Keefe, Dahli, Michaelangelo, Da Vinci? What does it matter what the onlooker or beholder sees with in a work. A work is ment to dredge up feeling, much like a fishing net, catching its fish. One can never know what is caught untill the net is displayed for all to see. Don't be negative because a common fish is caught with an exotic. All are wonders to behold.
@bubb1egir1 "oh look its a net so im gonna call it a fishing net because i know so much about nets and therefore i can assume that a net = a fishing net" now you can talk about how its for fishing til kingdom come but it wont matter because its a fucking sculpture
The only way I can see this "sculpture" that seems like a fishing net to me, would come into my understanding of art would be IN an Jackie Chan move... He could fall from a building or so and land in the net... Or a fighting scene in that net would be nice :D
Cool, but how long is that going to last? Even if itsout of kevlar thatwont lastso if it' is a perminent instalment maintainence will be a bitch. Even sunlight exposure is likely to bleach the coloration, novel idea though.
@thetravelinghermit Yes, and if all our resources were dedicated to art it would be a negligent allocation of priorities. But art often has the effect of encouraging us to think outside of our routine environment and to pay attention to matters beyond satisfying our immediate needs and desires. Inasmuch, it can have the effect of making us more engaged in the problems facing others such as people in desperate economic circumstances.
@bubb1egir1 When you look at a bowl containing some fruit you can contemplate it as a set of separate objects or consider it to be one thing: 'a bowl of fruit'. The point is, you're enticed to reconsider what's in front of you. Your own remark shows this. I think the point of pieces such as this is not for you to decide on what they are, but on what they might be. They are not intended to make you feel comfortable but unsettled.
@tag7100 most of the "uppity, pretentious artsy types" of the world start with kids in high school or college who have no money, no job, are depressed and/or dysfunctional, and who have a passion for sending some sort of message. And with the exception of few, they work. Hard. And for less pay than you do. If you had even some inkling of modern art history you would know this. And you even look up what this person was paid to create this or do you just like to make hugely ignorant complaints?
@bubb1egir1 if you are a rudimentary person, who would only see the basic, then you won't see all of the background, it is a fishing net suspended off the ground, but it would be nice if you acquired more knowledge.
Actually I've read the information, yes I believe this is beautiful. I don't know why!! The way it moves in the sky, maybe it will catch some dust and debris over time, showing the changes in the air quality. I think it would be cool if it changed colour too over time. I wonder how the shape of it was derived, I would be peeved to know it's just something random.. it would dilute the sentiment..
Is that the kind of net the Corporate-Commercial Fisheries use to kill our oceans? I say throw-in all the CEO's and burn it.. She Changes must be talking about Mother-Earth ...save the oceans.
The huge bunch of morons that commented gives me avery pessimistic view of the the future. you're too many, stupid and keep reproducing like rats! Grim!
Why is it round? It doesn't change shape much. The color is not bright, not shiny, it does not glimmer ...
It cannot compete with the blue sky, slow moving white puffy clouds, the many colors of a sunset, nor does it compete with the wind through trees nor the flowing waves of tall grasses in a wind blown field.
Perhaps even a fisherman's netting is more beautiful. (Ouch).
really guys really! these comments are off base. this is very innovative technically challenging work. i do very difficult pieces and i get the same from my galleries occasionally. this work is a real achievement in design.
I really hate it when people refer to this as art. In a sense, it is art, but overall, I thinks it's pretty cool. You can actually see when the thermal air currents are at their peak, during the middle of the day.
the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.
This was sooo beautiful!! Looks both like a mix between an angel and a giant jellyfish moving in the wind instead of the water... Loved it! A favorite! Thank`s for sharing!
I did not really mean that we needed to go out and catch fish from the sea for $1.6 million children (I was being sarcastic).

It is Art...It is quality not crap.
"The poor will always be there, You will only have me a short time, Let the woman be she is doing a good deed." -Jesus
I am avid supporter of feeding children and of art. I love it!!!!
Yes we as humans need to take care of the hungry in the world but we must also encourage creativity. Public art is very important. The amount of money spent is very small compared to the amount of money that we as a society spend on many other things. PUBLIC ART INSPIRES MANY - IT IS FOR ALL PEOPLE - RICH AND POOR.
even if the net could get enough fish we would outfish the sea and the food chain would be ruined and some animals would be extinct. everything works its way for a reason.
The money spent on public art in general is tiny! Especially compared to say the gazillion of shopping centers and malls?... To me this is not a waste. Just to point out that the cost of this project is not only plastic and net, it is also the giant pole (undoubtedly steel) and cables for mounting, as well as the installation labor and equipment costs.
I'd like to see you poor. You'll be asking people for money and they'll say "No, I can spend my money however I want." and walk away, leaving you to starve.
nice video...=)

I am avid supporter of feeding children and of art. I love it!!!!
Yes we as humans need to take care of the hungry in the world but we must also encourage creativity. Public art is very important. The amount of money spent is very small compared to the amount of money that we as a society spend on many other things. PUBLIC ART INSPIRES MANY - IT IS FOR ALL PEOPLE - RICH AND POOR.

The problem is, most public art... is sortof......... BAD. This huge net thing is okay, as they go, but I have seen some truly atrocious stuff.

even if the net could get enough fish we would outfish the sea and the food chain would be ruined and some animals would be extinct. everything works its way for a reason.

you should get balloons shaped like fishes and giant whales, then let them drift into the sculpture
