I was blessed beyond belief to see Honeyboy play just before he passed. He was playing the after show for a giant jazz fundraiser at the Apollo theatre (of all places) in Harlem called "A great night in Harlem". Even though the event's purpose was to raise money for aged jazz/blues musicians, only 8 or 9 people stayed behind to hear him. According to the New York Times obituary his last show was at a festival in Mississippi in April. I saw him May 19th...
Got to see him perform twice and meet him personally. Great man, great entertainer at 96. A true living legend. I'm afraid there just aren't anymore like him. All the great ones have now gone on. Gonna have a great blues band in heaven. R.I.P Honeyboy. Never forget you.
Gone but not forgotten,NOT remembered either.Who the fuck was this dude,he was a long time famous without anybody knowing it ! Just watch loads of "lifelong fans" come out the woodwork overnight. Jockey?
So sad to hear the news of his death, though it may have been expected. Not many men (especially musicians) live to the grand age of 96! He was a great man and a great musician. The world has lost one of it's finest cultural and historical treasures.
Nothing like hearing the blues in this day and age coming from an African American man pushing 100. I can only imagine the things he has to blue about. Makes listening to guys like John Mayer playing the blues even more laughable than it already was. It must be a strange thing for him when white people come up to him after his shows, shake his hand, and tell him it was an honor.
@MattMonk Thats a real bs thing to say!! Blues is a universal theme, interwoven into the national fabric. To be high-handed and prescriptive enough to claim that white people shouldnt play or appreciate the music or the performers is just ridiculous!! I met Honeyboy at the 2009 Mississippi Valley Blues Fest and shook his hand, addressed him as "Mr. Edwards" and told him it was a "true honor"-- Im also a blues guitarist-- But because Im white I had/have no business doing so?
Honeyboy Edwards plays the Chicago area regularly. GO SEE HIM WHILE YOU STILL CAN. I hesitated on the last Miles davis performance in Chuacago and will ALWAYS regert it. (and forever be reminded of it : ( He'll be @ the Chicago Bluesfest this June, 2011. be there or be SQUARE.
And before I forget, just who the hell were the two people who disliked this? Probably one was the one out of five dentists that didn't recommend Trident gum.
@elc1960 I wouldn't worry about them. They don't have any taste in music they probably like that godawful hip hop and rap. Mind you there are a small minority of rap artists that don't spout of hatred and violence. Their stuff isn't too bad and I can tolerate them.
@elc1960 Ha Ha Ha ! Why the hell can't someone dislike this! People can dislike anything they want to. If everyone allways likes the same thing the word dislike would'nt exist along with a lot of others.
Honeyboy and Pinetop Perkins are the only remaining bluesmen of their era. Great to see that, despite the limitations and frailty of age, he's still out there letting us all know how it's done. Sharp as a tack, too. We need to recognize these people while they're alive, not after they're gone. R.L. Burnside, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Roosevelt Sykes and so many others deserved much more recognition than they received in their lifetimes.
@elc1960 Well said! Its sad that we as a society do that give recognition to people after they have passed on. They need to know what a contribution they made before they leave us.
@elc1960 I'm glad we still have some of the old bluesmen with us to show these kids how its done however, theyre starting to pass on now. It bothers me that we don't have many bands playing the old style blues any more its more rhythn/blues/soul. The Blues Brothers have done a great job drawing attention to this genre. Any way you have a nice memory of meeting a great man.
@blueagate I met the late Carey Bell as well there, on another night. Hubert Sumlin as well (but he's still with us, thankfully). Gotta go see the older bluesmen and women while we still have the chance.
@blueagate Re your comment about "not many bands doingthe old school style of blues": the Northeastern US has a number of great performers doing acoustic country style blues, such as Paul Rishell & Annie Raines, and Paul Geremia. Canada has a man named Paul James who plays acoustic resonator guitar (dobro) in the style of Robert Johnson. Still some out there; you just gotta know where to look.
@elc1960 I'll have to check them out on YouTube. I'm in Maryland which is considered the mid-atlantic states. We don't have much shaking in the way of blues around here.
@blueagate Well, you're close to VA, which is thriving, from what I understand. Alligator recording artists John Cephas & Phil Wiggins are from that area (Cephas died a couple of years ago, though). Blues Revue columnist/acoustic bluesman Doug MacLeod lives there too, as do "Steady Rollin' " Bob Margolin, Deborah Coleman and Shemekia Copeland. And of course, MD has a very famous blues festival every summer that always attracts the cream of the modern blues crop.
@elc1960 Thanks for the info. Its only been within the last few years that I've gotten into blues so I'm not up on where all the blues happenings are. I always loved the Blues Brothers but I never bothered checking out the original songs they covered.
When I was about 11 years old (2004 I believe)I went to this really small school, Pasadena Waldorf School, about 200 kids. Back then I had no Idea who Honey Boy was. My teacher told me this blues musician was coming to our school to play for us. We all sat in the pretty small room and he played for us about 30 minutes and then we got to ask him questions. I asked him if he still had his first guitar and he said someone broke it. Then I found out who he was about a year ago. Wish I could go back!

Nothing like hearing the blues in this day and age coming from an African American man pushing 100. I can only imagine the things he has to blue about. Makes listening to guys like John Mayer playing the blues even more laughable than it already was.
