1'st I've heard it on my radio in 1979. I was only 13 y.o. It sounded like an angel's voice for a young boy from wrong side of the Iron Curtain. Empty shops with no goods, tired people and grey, dusty, smoke-filled industrial city - that was my everyday landscape. Friends just discovered punkrock, so everybody talked about The Clash and Sex Pistols and me against the stream - Joni Mitchell
I falled in love imediately, and I'm still in love with this song and Joni
What is not apparently understood is that this song is as much about wanting to never be one of these stoned and isolated hippy chicks, as it is about pulling up a kitchen chair and having some smoke and cannabis klatsch. Joni is saying, I love ya ladies, but get me out of here!
Joni still owns the house that she was singing about in this song! Friends of mine rented it from her over 10 years ago and apparently she felt she never wanted to sell it. A house with a heart in Laurel Canyon and no where near where Sharon Tate was murdered, which I believe was on Coldwater Canyon.
@IndiaClarke1: That is so cool! Did they say anything about how she is as a person? Can you imagine having Joni-fucking-Mitchell as your land lady??? How cool would that be? :)
Oh! Joni was singing about Laurel Canyon alright but to understand the real nature of that place you should check out the excellent research work by Dave McGowan!..........Remember the Sharon Tate murder and Charles Manson? That all happened up in that canyon and things much, much worse!
Thank you for posting. This song could have been written fr my old neighbors in Santa Barbara. Early 1970s, the hipy enclave known lovally as "Hidden Holliow". Lynn, Celia, Sue, you all will never be forgotten.
I love this song. Reminds me so much of a very dear friend who passed much too early. We shared many of Jonis tunes together. Phyllis- you'll always be in my heart & soul. Thanks for watching out over me from above. Love, Steve

It IS about Laurel Canyon:} She was cited as having written it about her time there.

Nice 12-string. I think this might have been written about LA's Laurel Canyon.
