  • Nice review but should not wear a black shirt, you cant see the camera half the time!

  • did he just say pentax k7D? nice vid nevertheless.

  • @11rastaman69 haha good observation... ;P

  • I almost cried when he was like, "Well Pentax just came out with this fantastic model and well we just so happened to have a prototype in our hands...la dee da" WHAT! I want free cameras!

  • I went to B&H and checked it for myself. Option 18 allows you to turn off noise reduction for long exposures. If your K7 doesn't, then just upgrade to the later firmware.

  • Not when you're using bulb mode.

  • Oh nice, giving me negative points . That amounts to a form a censorship! Did I make an offensive statement? Or you just hate it when someone points out a factual flaw. I stated nothing incorrectly so the problem is yours alone.

  • Only one problem with this camera for pros. It dosnt have a UDMA card slot.

  • Good review.

Unfortunately, Pentax didn't fix the one serious problem that plagued the K20D. Like the K20D, the K7 is unsuitable for long exposures because of the mandatory DFS (Dark Frame Subtraction).

Good luck taking photos of night time storms, fireworks, stars, or whatever. You'll be waiting double time, between each exposure, for the DFS to complete!

I was going to upgrade to the K7 until I was disappointed by that news. Looks like I am converting to Canon, after all!

  • I just upgraded from the K100 to the K7, and both of them have the ability to disable "DFS". I find it hard to believe this isn't available on the K20. On the K7, it's in the custom setup menu, item #18.

  • Actually no, that is incorrect.

#18 has no effect on bulb exposures or any exposure 30 seconds or greater. Hardly a worthy improvement over the K20D.

There is currently no way to disable DFS on either the K20D or the K7. Sadly, Pentax doesn't care about losing customers that want to shoot exposures longer than 30 seconds OR in bulb mode.

Actually, the truth is probably that the noise would be so bad without DFS engaged, they don't wish to embarrass themselves.

  • Your post said that it's "mandatory", not that it's only mandatory on exposures over 30 seconds.

Pentax listens to their customers (as evidenced by the speed in which the K7 1.01 firmware came out. Perhaps if this really bothers you, instead of trolling on youtube boards and trashing something which you have no firsthand knowledge, you might contact Pentax and inform them that this needs to be fixed.

  • "trolling" ?? Ah... the favorite words of a fanboy! Better learn the true definition of the word "troll" sonny b/c you got that wrong!

Please don't tell me what I don't know! Pentax listens to their customers? Really? Which customers told them to put the nearly useless (not even full HD) video on the K7, and at the expense of other shortcomings. Clearly this camera is not aimed at the semi-pro market... which is WHAT their customers have been asking for many years!

  • Why don't you try to shoot RAW? Noice reduction processing should be disabled in RAW mode.

  • I only shoot in RAW. Makes no difference, the Pentax K20D and the Pentax K7 are the ONLY mid-range DSLRs that are virtually useless in long exposure photography.

  • Hmmm, that's interesting. I can see (on dpreview website) that the custom option 19 turns off noise reduction, but that's only for high ISO. For long exposure (option 18) it only has two settings: Auto, and Standard. Maybe you should try higher ISO for long exposure? Just a thought. Anyway, I have an Olympus E-500, and I find long exposure pictures useless with noise reduction off. The hot pixels show very bright spots if the DFS is off. I usually have NR off, except for long exposure.

  • I love my K20 D and can't wait to get my hands on the K7.

  • If this did 1080p it would so be mine...damn.

  • Go buy a camcorder then.

  • Got two already.

    How about you?

  • I'm only interested in taking pictures.

  • Think you made a mistake. At 7: 54 you said the D300 doesn't have a 100% viewfinder? O.o

  • Thanks for updating it! Answered some of my questions I had on Pentaxforums (well partially answered anyways). :D
