This has to rank in the top-3 of all the great American National Anthems that I have ever heard. It is so hard to sing but the does it beautifully.

I don't now about anyone else, but personally I get annoyed by singers that try to use vocal tricks or yodel" their way through our anthem , to make up for their inability to sing it properly.

It wasn't bad, he himself was brilliant, but NOT american. I actually take my naturalization ceremony and become a citizen in September. Apparently we're supposed to say the pledge of allegiance and sing the national anthem-which is funny bc no one knows the words and they don't help you out.

I thought the first minute of the anthem wasn't that special, in particular the music was awful!

However, when he sings "and the rockets red glare", he really comes into his own. This version is certainly the one that most closely rivals Whitney's 1991 version.

Whitney caressed the song as only she could at that time. She did not try to show off, she just did justice to it and her voice was pure and glorious. And of course she is the only person ever to make the National Anthem hit the Billboard charts.

Let me guess, you LOVE Ewan McGregor's singing voice from Moulin Rouge; now McGregor is flat with no vibrato whatsoever. Groban isn't nasal nor whiny and his vibrato is a natural progression from years of voice lessons. He's earned his success. I can't even count how many times your national anthem has been ruined by a tone deaf, over-bearing celebrity showoff with delusions of grandeur.

I do not begrudge his success or talent, I just do not care for him. As for all the other people singing the Star Spangled Banner, yes usually they are overwrought pop stars who have no clue how to sing that song. Whitney Houston was the only exception and if she can hang with Pavarotti then she can hang with anyone.

@centaur532 Actually Mariah stayed pretty faithful until the "free," note and the brave at the end. Christina tends to over sing many things......

However I never cared for either of those ladies interpretations..... Whitney Houston did it right, her voice then was pure and she sang it with such class, dignity and fervor that it made the entire nation stand up and notice. There has never been a time in the history of this country that everyone literally stopped for a rendition of the TSSB.

I'm not very appreciative when singers alter the time signature of our national anthem. The song is in 3/4 time, and altering it to 4/4 like Groban does is really tacky, IMO. Plus, does it really need a synth orchestra click track behind it? I feel that some of the dignity of the song is robbed when artists alter the Banner to make it sound more "poppy"....

Got to love josh groban's voice. He is the idol for many male singers! He did change up some of the notes which is kind of a no no when singing the national anthem BUT it was still tasteful so I don't really have a problem with it. Great Job!
