Evolution created us to find certain sounds pleasant and certain sounds unpleasant. What on earth did it have in mind when it makes anyone that listens to that go tingly all over?
Concorde (for BA at least) was profitable right up until the crash. If you do not take into account the develoment costs then yes it was.
Bit like saying a car costs very little to run if you do not account for depreciation, unfortunately as it is a thing of beauty and and engineering triumh.
@brightlights456X Concorde wins, it doesn't piss fuel everywhere when its not going supersonic! It carries 100 people, not 2! Any military can strap 2 massive jets onto a sleek fuselage and make it go really fast, but for 2 countries to come together and make a profitable (back in the day) aircraft that can super cruise on the edge of space, get from LHR to JFK in just over 3 hours, and drink champagne while not wearing a space suit! Thats Engineering!!
@jonny96 Concorde (for BA at least) was profitable right up until the crash in Paris and then the September 11th attacks. Besides, she is profitable beyond measure when it comes to soul, prode and spirit!
@sthill1993 Nice comment, Oil prices now would have killed it for sure though. But saying that, september 11th did have a direct result on world Oil prices as it sparked more conflict in the gulf, who knows! She's still the queen of the skies in my eyes.
I must be misunderstanding you then. From BA's point of view, there were 4 scheduled landings to/from JFK every day from 1976 until 2000 and then resumed for a year until 2003 when they retired the fleet. There were also all the chartered flights to the Caribbean,South America, Africa, Middle East, Far East and Australasia. You do the math, and not once was there a crash. Air France ran a similar schedule for the same amount of years and only had that 1 awful crash. More crashes than landings??
@keelbluese The Lightning could, it was proved in 1985. BA tested Concorde against A Lightning, F104, F15 and a few other fighters, the Lightning was the only thing that could pull on Concorde, the rate of climb on the Lightning is unbelieveable, it can zoom climb to peak at 88,000ft or something rediculous like that.
@pilotanthony and now the USA has no means of putting anyone in space thanks to the disaster we have in the White House and Congress. The world is less advanced now than it was in the 1970s...
You gotta be joking. You're trying to blame the current President and Congress on something that was more or less decided a decade ago? Get educated....

@ThePiouuuuu YOU started the shit talking. Whats your fucking problem? We bail out all your fucking countries when its time for war. And you have the nerve to shit talk us and put us all in the same category. Do I sit there and talk shit about UK and European people? No.
@ThePiouuuuu looks like your a little obsessed with the USA. I didn't even know anything about "rican" poverty. Must be slow news over there to report that kinda of bullshit. BTW what country do people immigrate to for a better life?
@superskullmaster what country ? well europe isn't a coutnry, but there are more africans and romanians, russians who immigrate in europe (uk, france, spain) than mexicans to the usa
Love it, I only flew on a Air France Concorde once from Paris to JFK and it was fantastic!. I sat in seat 2A and just remember pretending that I did this all the time, especially when it came to in the info on in-flight trimming using the fuel tanks. I was like a kid in a candy store. Would have been nice to be sitting next to Uma Thurman but that would have pushed the envelope! What a BEAutiful aircraft! and Uma has nice ankles :-)
if it wasnt for those french c***s who couldnt make it pay and their buddies at airbus who pulled the plug , she would still be flying . ba made a profit with concorde,
My mistake. I figured from your tone that you were one of those people who mindlessly hate the USA (and there are plenty of reasons to have issues with us, believe me). I apologize.
@danstarone With respect, if you want us to reduce carbon emissions, then help us god damn it! So long as people around the world allow themselves to be suborned and bought out by American money and allied business interests, for just so long will they say and do nothing about this. The UK needs to tell the US to fuck off, but like our politicians, yours are a bunch of invertebrates, as are most of your people and most people in most places. Declare war on us you wusses!
@danstarone PMT? I guess that means "premenstrual tension". Ok, perhaps I could have put it more eloquently and subtly, but it is difficult not to overstate the case when the circumstances are so dire. Frankly, I sometimes despair of humanity. @MICKEYISLOWD Not entirely Anglo/French. You also have to add Canadian too, as several of the engineers from AVRO Canada, lead by Jim Floyd developed the Concord. The engines were based on the Iroquois engines that were going to be used in the Arrow before that project got cancelled.
It was grounded because people didnt want to fly Concorde anymore due to the Paris crash, it was losing lots of money and wasnt financially stable to fly it anymore.

i remember i was in an open shopping center in london on holiday and a tribute filght was on above us they even stopped the casual music so we could hear the raw of the gorgeous pratney & witt engines R.i.P
@DrCabbage1 They were also Afterburning Rolls Royce Engines too. The RAF Olympus Vulcan actually had Afterburning Rolls Royce Engines in flight until 1965. I would have loved to have seen that Vulcan. Should have saved a couple for Air Shows. The Concorde with Afterburners on is said to have 50,000 lbs static thrust each engine. World record. That's 200,000 lbs static thrust combined
what have we got now that even comes close to this aircraft ? Even the Harrier has been
given away ? Cant beleive how good this plane looks not even out of place in 2012.

One crash, and Concorde gets grounded. People are so scared and paranoid nowadays!
PlaneAndTVtechfan 1 year ago
@PlaneAndTVtechfan
It's not THAT it crashed, that caused the grounding. It's WHY it crashed: a single-point failure, involving a known structural defect.
That sort of thing does indeed scare the crap outta regulators.
It's also not the first time it's happened.
Similar circumstances befell the DC10 (in all countries) as well as the 727 (in several Latin American countries) before this.

@tomibewi Concorde had Rolls Royce Olympus Engines (modified Avro Vulcan powerplants) - not Pratt & Whitney
