  • What I loved about the old Beetle was the 0-60 time of about 25 seconds, the auxiliary heating system, (the cigarette lighter), the way it wandered in high winds, the ocean liner like throttle response at speed.

  • When they make a really fast car for it's time, that doesn't break down, looks great and at a ridiculously small prize again, THEN they'll be able to call it beetle.

This is just another worthless try to sell overprized rebodied golfs to rich kids.

  • new bug sucks, I'd pick the old one anyday

  • 21 million just isnt enough, make more mk1 beetles!! my aunts husband has a mid 60's sitting on their yard wasting itself!

  • Nice car, but i prefer to go to my work with my 1979.

  • Let's be clear. The old Bug is just amazing it's just an Symbol. But let's be honest, the new one is a PIECE OF SHIT.

  • @espectro2n I own a 68 KGhia and a 72 Beetle, and lets be honest the new car is superior in every way. It will outhandle, out accelerate an old beetel and gets better fuel economy. You don't have to adjust valves, adjust Carbs, wait an hour for the heater to warm up and instead of an electric fan you actually get AC. The original Beetle had a 12000 mile warranty, this one has a 60,000mile warranty and if adjusted for inflation the new one is cheaper. The new is about 60 years more superior.

  • @desertsoldier81 Right but i don't know i think that the new Bug is just ugly

  • @espectro2n Actually I will be honest. Compared to the old car, the new one is superior is every single way.

  • The used to make old bugs to last, my 69' autostick has the original engine, interior etc. No rattles. You should see my 06 jetta..............rattles all over. Everything now is made to be disposable. Manufacturers claim it's green tech lol....

  • They should have just left the engine, transmission, & drive wheels in the back. Using a 2L version of the Subaru water cooled boxer 4, with an exhaust that makes the nostalgic tweet we all expect a beetle to make. THEN I could without flinching accept the new aesthetics. That would feel like a modernized type 1. Done in this fashion I've laid out here, they should replace the Toureg with a re done type 181 safari(Thing).

  • As with all companies, they took an amazing design and made it boring.

I miss the aesthetic detail work they used to put into car designs. :-\

  • Looks nice but ill stick with my '73

  • Old bugs weere and always are the bomb!

  • VW just did too well of a job, the original can never be beaten

  • old beatle is nicer

  • Driving an old beetle '66 is a lifestyle, like choppers. It's easyriding, it's calming, the sound of the engine a warm embrace, knowing it's a strong car with its limits you have to manage it gently, with care. I am always amazed how when I let My friends ride My car the make it cough and refuse almost to respond. It takes skill and love to own and drive a car as the old beetle. The new one, anyone can step in and make it go, it's for toddlers ;)

  • God, that green 52 is just beautiful!

I do like the new Beetle in gray though I still love my Golf TDI.

  • old= gold

  • Porsche kept the motor in the rear. Why can't VW? At least with the E Bugster. Until VW sobers up and gets their taste back, I'll just stick to driving my air cooled Beetle (witch is still on the road as a daily driver). Just sayin

  • I AGREE WELL SAID

  • Wtf he new version is sexy from a guys point of view!!! That old rounded piece of shit you guys called a car is ugly to say the least

  • They are completely different cars, is not possible a comparation. The Bug is not just the design, si the air cooled too, is the engine on back... well are many things.

  • I'd def go with the 52 beetle... But couldn't resist snatching the motor and throwing a 2332cc Pauter Turbo motor in it... That would be an epic win!!!

  • NO

  • isnt it technically the 4G? correct me if im wrong, but; split/oval, super, new, 2012

  • Hey motor trend! The first bug was late 40's!! NOT the late 60's get it together please.

  • GREAT REVIEW!!!!

  • I wouldn't mind a modern water-cooled engine, but they put the engine in the wrong end!

  • if you're looking for a 2012 beetle go an buy a 911 porsche. its more bug than 3. gen VW beetle will ever be. one issue though. the price. not that it matters, as you can guess by the price of the 2012 beetle ;)

  • I'd rather the old one to be honest :D

New ones (both gen) look like uglified Audi TTs

  • Only if it comes standard with the VR-6 engine

  • This is nothing but sales BS. This car is no more related to the old Beetle than it is related to the man in the moon. In my opinion, the old Beetle is nice, 2nd gen Beetle is OK, 3rd gen is not even a Beetle.

  • when i watch this, i found white supra at the right... so i clicked to supra...

  • It looks like a plastic turd. I hate it. If they want to "bottle lightning", all they have to do is make a small, metal car, with an aircooled, reliable engine and transaxle, keep the interior bare and elegant, and sell it for a reasonable price. All the people who put that new PT Cruiser together and called it a Beetle, should lose their jobs!

  • The headlights and tail lights are ugly ricer crap. The new car is probably 50,000 $USD, and nothing like a real Beetle. Waste of materials!

  • I have 2 old school air cooled VWs myself. All of you people saying bring the Beetle back in it's original form sorry it aint happening. I would love to see that too but there is no way they could make a bug just like the old one and meet current EPA and DOT standers. Emissions laws is the main reason why VW abandon air cooled engine in the first place. If someone knows how they could do this I would love to hear it.

  • I want the old bug and van back so please Volkswagen!

  • go back to the original! make the old bugs again!

  • เจ๋ง!

  • Please redesign everything! It's just a body on a Golf chassis. This is the "Peoples Car". Who car afford this? It's suppose to be a basic no thrills, get you from point A to B car. To many gizmos. I can pull a Type I engine in 45 minutes. Like to see someone do that with these New Beetles. Yes, Beetles not Bugs! Rear engine, rear wheel drive. You don't see Porsche putting a 911 engine in front, with front wheel drive do you? To bad Volkswagen can't listen to the people for the "Peoples Car".

  • I love the way it looks, and it's about a million miles ahead of the 'new beetle'

  • Engines in the wrong place.

  • Fail.

  • great beetle

  • Listen to all this crap about what a failure the New Beetle was... in the service of hyping the new (3rd gen) model. This thing isn't closer to the original Beetle. If anything, it's more of what they're complaining about with the New Beetle. Plus that flattened, non-Beetlesque roof.

  • I like the Old one BETTER!!!!

  • The old one is better

  • looks like a chubby porche. still better then the one before it. out with the old, in the with new.

  • I am a VW Bug Lover. My 1st car was a 1970 Bug.I am on my 3rd Bug a 2010.I do not care for the latest style. Will NOT be buying one of those =(

  • Bring out the New Bugs did the Old Bugs a favour.

The Old bugs became more Iconic and Old Bugs, Value went up.

  • the old bug: its retro and simple and possibly the sexiest old car anybody knows of (yea thats exaggerated) but its still cheap to buy and to be honest a $5000 bug will stay a $5000 bug if you keep it in the right condition

the new bug: looks like shit, probably drives like shit, heavy as shit, the wheels are shit, the owners are gay.. and shit and no matter how much anybody hates hitler, he does a better job designing a car than the faggots who designed this huge, ugly SHIT!

  • the new one is just screwed. keep it oldschool thats just the way i like it. it dont have a boxer engine and its not aircooled. and its on the wrong place. just keep it oldschool maybe put a better boxer engine in it and dont change more then that. water is for cooking not for cooling

  • fuck, i hate new VW .... mk3 is the latest graeat vw car !

  • not nice in my eyes ! far too samey. could easily be a chrysler :(

  • no it does not look better!!!!!!!!!!!

    people open your eyes!!!!!!!

the classic originals were class and quality!!!!!

the new ones are no class and less quality, now its just mass production!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @lordshitsalot

Dude the original car was mass production. Up until a couple of years ago it held the record for most single model of cars ever produced. But yes, the new Beetle, and new-new Beetle are shit, that no self respecting car guy would buy. They're heavy, too chunky, water cooled, ff layout drivetrain, and are trying so hard to be "sexy" and "cool" that they've completely lost the simple, genuine and straight-shooting attitude of the original. I'll stay with my '66 Beetle.

    -Joe C.

  • @360spinetransfer

Also, to me, it looks a bit like if a Chrysler Sebring f*cked a Porsche Cayman.

  • 0:36 °,° Lol

  • I hate,agly beee

  • Kinda looks like a PT Cruiser...

  • it tries to copy porsche now...

  • @kimjb95 The Porsche 911 was derived from the Beetle.

  • @kimjb95 Dr. Ferdinand Porche designed the Type 1. How did you arrive at your thoughts of "copy"?

  • Engineers now days have absolutely nothing on the engineers designing VW's 40 years ago. I say give up and let the icon be an icon....

  • OLD IS GOLD ! NEW IS FUC*ED UP !

  • I love this model

  • Bottle lightening? It's called a Leyden Jar.

  • @mpc07005 touché!!

  • "how on earth do u duplicate a video thats perhaps the worlds most recognizable, let alone improve on it?" well if you're vw, apparently u dont, u make a piece of shit nothing like the original and call it the same name (y)

  • needs a cummins! lol!

  • the old one is bttr....

  • i remember when the "new" beetle came out the main complaint was that it was not a rear engine. Well WTF, I really thought they would fix that. Oh well... sticking to the old school bugs! THEY DID IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!

  • Surely they can do better than this it still looks naff compared the the original.

  • i hat the new bug

  • they should give it 300 hp!!!

  • rear engine Diesel would be nice too...

  • Air cooled rear engine, made simple & dependable with a similar body that does not have the rust issue of the original. I would buy that!

  • wtf this isnt no beetle

  • Wow, thats a nice baby hitler you got there

    (Hitler called beetles "Baby Hitlers")

  • only reason they dont use the old body shape is because old beetles are very dangerous, only 2% of beetle owners in accidents survive. VW is actually trying to get rid of all old VWs bc of the safety risk.

  • @SuperBrokenJ You are an idot. Volkswagen isnt trying to get rid of the old beetle becasue 1 - It was their biggest accomplishment. First beetle made in 1938. And second - It would be physically impossible, there was 22 million beetles made from 1938 to now. And anyways how would volkswagen go about wiping out the old beetle? And that 2% thing is total horse shit. Yes the acr is alot weaker than a car of todays standards but it still holds its own in an accident.

  • 0:00

  • Just give it another name, like WrongBodyKitted Golf or something. This is just an insult to the Beetle and it's owners.

  • its fukin gross.

  • NO ! JUST KEEP ALL THE NEW LUXURY AND PUT THE OLD BODIE ON .. IT'S A NO BRAINER ...PLANE AND SIMPLE .. NOTHING BETTER THAN THE OLD BUG. STYLING . I DON'T UNDERSTAND CAR MANUFACTURERS NOT RESTAMPING THE OLD BODIES AND PUTING IN NEW RELIABLE, SAFE INTERNALS ... YOU SAID IT YOURSELF. WHY CHANGE A GREAT THING. .....

THIS MEANS YOU TO CHEVY,DODGE & FORD ..NO BRAINER

  • naahh i stick to the old version. Mutch cheaper and more car for the money

  • who the hell cares its just a car and if u like well u like if u dont then kick rocks.

  • Getting an ad for Ford before this video. AS IF I WANT TO SEE A FORD WHEN I'M WATCHING A VIDEO ON VOLKSWAGEN!

    /rage

God I love the original Beetle, it's been my favourite car since I was a kid.

The new Beetle and this 3rd gen? Hmm, they're really not the same. Kinda like the new Mini, these remakes look cool at first but then you compare them to the originals and you realise they're nothing but cheap imitations.

I do like the new Scirocco, but it wasn't pretending to be the original...

  • @mesmerizeme LOL @ your last sentence. I own a 63 beetle myself.

  • @mesmerizeme Hitler didn't design anything himself. He stole the design from Tatra and made Porsche copy it.

  • aff...so mais o antigoo!!

  • 66" ftw

  • Okay, so I like Fords as well but that's a different story lol

  • I'm a pure VW fan but my gosh I HATE the New Beetle of the early noughties. This car is better, but still miles away from the success of the original Bug. The engine is in the wrong place, power goes through the wrong wheels, it's water-cooled (which is wrong), too big and heavy, too expensive, and too many gizmos and luxury. I'm not impressed to be honest!

  • @FordV8Supercar I agree I used to be into the classic beetle(well all of the rear wheel drive rear engine rounded body volkswagens of the past). As a kid. Im not really into Volkswagen anymore. But still remain a fan of rear powered cars. So No to front wheel drive. :P

  • @FordV8Supercar I agree with you. However I think that this car is one of the most charismatic new cars on the market. As much as I admire the old car, I think this one hits it where it counts:in spirit. Plus, It's easier to live with than the old car. People should give this car a chance to develop. I f this one's a big success, maybe VW will make it more like the original. Now that they have access to Porsche engines, they might put it in the rear again.

  • @FordV8Supercar YEAH!

  • New Beetle = Plastic Shit..

  • @aafkgirl91 All the new cars are plastic.

  • come on there isnt going to be a new bug...that is one to even get close to the spirit of the original...the new "bug" is a complicated expensive car like any other...they use the bug name to fool people that they are buying a piece of history

  • New bug actually looks pretty nice. I'm impressed VW :)

  • @Anoush13 I agree , the new bug looks much better . whats the drivetrain?

  • the old one still looks better but the new one is def a good improvment from the 98 ver

  • i have a 1956 beetle and a 1967 vw camper.

  • Ugly forever.

  • The one major mess-up on the 2012=ENGINE SHOULD NOT BE IN FRONT!

  • the roof line is awsome front and back suck

  • no

  • My grandpa told me a story about how he sold the best car he ever had because in the 70's a used beetle sold for more then a new beetle; people didn't want to wait to drive one.

  • 1:20

is it just me or the front end looks like it's taken from porsche ??

  • I would gladly exchange my defective 2012 Beetle for an original Beetle. Manual windows that work. Steering that does not wander into another lane. The 2012 Beetle may NOT be ready for prime time, at least those being made in Mexico.

Mine is going back. Ouch VW.

  • Sorry to pop bubbles...the new Beetle, actually, almost no modern car can stand up to the old Beetle. Simple, reliable, inexpensive mechanics over complex, unreliable, expensive circuitry any day.

  • Id rather stick to the old one "-63" id rather walk then buy the New Beetle.

  • Many people know that the original VW Beetle was produced by Ferdinand Porsche but few know that he was given the design sketches and ordered to produce the "people's car" by Adolf Hitler himself when he came to power shortly after in 1932. It was Hitler who also ordered the construction of the Autobahn back then when only 1.3% Germans owned cars whereas in America it was 20%. Both designs have stood the Test Of Time. And we thought ol' Adolf was good for nothing except killing Jews, no?

  • @AccordGTR and fewer know it was a design taken from the Tatra, which means Porsche pretty much stole the design and settled the final law suit with Tatra in the 60's for a huge amount. Yup, Hitler and Porsche stole most of the ideas behind the Beetle from the Tatra company. Still, I like the Beetle more than the Tatra it was copied from. Even the flat engine was a copied concept, but a damn good improvement.

  • @Deathpunkization Hitler drove the Tatra and liked it, told Porsche to produce so every German could afford it. That's different imo. Remember Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia and could have produced the Tartra but he sketched his own and gave specific conditions to Porsche to follow for a German VW. I agree Porsche stole some patented design aspects from Tartra like the air cooling system. So even it wasn't an original idea, it became The Best-selling car design of all time

  • @AccordGTR Adolf was a very hands on guy, he was very into aesthetics and design, sorta like Steve Jobs.

  • @stronty haha well I dunno about Steve Jobs. Hitler fought in WW1 and after the war when he was Job-less (no pun intended) he tried to sell his paintings and wanted to become an artist. Wealthy Jews of Germany controlled the fine arts trade. At the same time he was "discovered" by a fledgling political party the Nationalist Socialists German Worker's Party or its shortened nickname the Nazi's. His oratory skills far out-shone his art skills so he had to choose politics instead of art

  • The new bug is beautiful. A worthy replacement and a superb job of refinement. However, I still prefer the old Saab 900 of the 90's with its much more ergonomically correct curved windshield and short pillars. It was a classic Swedish beauty, and still is.

  • the new beetle looks fucking shit, i would have my '75 bug over that any day.

  • Turbo :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

IDIOTISM, They just need to took old beatle and make new one, just with el. injection. THAT'S IT-No new interior, no new design, and no turbo of course

  • @MrPekisha No El. Injection please, the actual mechanical pump that comes with the original is one of the things I love the most about the original Beetles. The less electrical components the better in every way, no power windows, none of that is what makes older cars and especially our Beetle special, simplicity and total reliability.

  • @MrPekisha LOL you want turbo, just drop in a porsche 911 engine.

  • @luigi2999 Porshe's rubbish :(

  • another mess!

  • My firs car was a 69 beatle I drive a a4. love german engineering

  • old school beetle is better one of my fav cars

  • I think this new one looks alright.

My first car was a '73 bug. Now after many vehicles later I have a '75 bug and an '01 Dodge. (Both bugs Standard, not Super). I would still rather drive my old bug. The only thing I want more is a '66 or older bug (preferably '63 or older). The bug is my primary ride; I drive my truck about 20 miles a month.

Seemingly this new design is better looking than the last generation, in my opinion.

  • Why can't they make on SIMILAR to the original Beetle, not all futuristic and new-ish? I don't like it.

  • I think it kinda looks very good although the interior is a bit out of proportion. I like the original Beetle too but who has the time to waste driving slowly on the highway in an underpowered engine without any air conditioning in this decade?

  • Audi TT on meth...

  • sigh the new beatles are as fast as my GTI, maybe even faster due to the weight. sigh time to send my car to APR......

  • rear, boxer engine - in the old beetle. The new is a fake, disposable beetle.

  • Utter

    Complete

    and

    Abysmal

    Failure.

The Dodge Charger for the German car builders.

Once again, a perfect and complete styling failure.

  • @Wikipunani Unforgivable.

  • too expensive. and it still looks like a car given to a girl's sweet sixteen birthday.

  • our first car was a beetle followed by passat. so hands down to VW in general. german cars are awesome. precision, design, and safety -- all in one.

  • What song is this? Its beautiful. If someone knows, can you share that information with me please?

  • the wheels, just dont fit on everybody's eyes these days

  • I don't think so

  • Wheels look dumb.

  • OLD>NEW

  • I bet if VW would return to produce original Type 1 they would sell way more specimens of old Beetle whan of this new shit!

  • i would take the old bug over the new bug any day. why? because i can easily get 25k+ for THAT split oval

  • NOOO!!!!

  • I think it looks more like the super beetle then the earlier ones .

  • I love it

  • The second gen beetle sucks, this one will suck as well. VW will never be able to recreate the awesomeness that is the classic beetle.

  • at least it doesnt look as gay as the "new beetle" wich i always called the "gay beetle"

  • We don't need yet another golf... The scirocco is cool this is just repetitive.

Why not making a beetle that IS a beetle? A really tough, simple, cheap and safe car? Something that is really good german quality but it's basic enough to be cheap? With simple mechanics? We have a golf that is cool... but i bet they'd sell a faster, better handling, safer, modernized version of the old beetle.

  • I would like a comparison video with all 3 generations

  • My neighbor has a type 1 beatle and the new one too lol . The old one is just more detailed and the craftsmanship was there. The new one just looks bland and silly compared to the old beatle.

  • it looks like a squished beetle that has chopped up Chrysler 300 tail lights O_o

  • Well, the 1960's and 1970'sbug was more affordable to people !!!

That was why it was first manufactured !

  • f%^*k brand new cars, I'm ridin' old school :)

  • The Original Beetle has more style and detail

  • @Charger5001968 The old skool Beetle?

  • VW guys should have learned from the Fiat 500 lesson given by the Italians.

  • vw's new lower grille design sucks..

  • I see the new VW 50 times per day, and i don't see the old VW for some years.

  • Looks better than the "MK2" but that isn't saying much now is it?

  • Put a $12,000 base, and I'm a buyer!!!

  • @EUROPEANSUBERALLES you're absolutely corrrect!! :)

  • trying to bottle lightning is worth while?

  • Make the outside look EXACTLY like the old one update the inside and you got a WINNER....WINNING!

  • I'll go down here as to being the absolute only person on YouTube who actually bought a brand new 1960 VW Beetle. In 1960!

I paid $1600 for it. I added a radio (option) for $20.00, and whitewall tires (option) for $20.00 more.

I financed it! As that was some very serious money for me back then.

I traded it in for a 1965 Bug.

Today I ride a 2010 Ducati Multistrada bike.

    You do the math!

    Dan

  • If you think it looks cool, buy one and write again in two years. These cars are well thought out, but the materials are very poor. It fell apart unlike anything I've ever seen. I'm a former new beetle owner....never again.

  • Now, if VW can just manage to build a bug that isn't a piece of junk mechanically and electrically, we'll have a winner. I've known 2 people with 2nd gen bugs and both owners sold them vowing to never own another VW. 1st gens were way better (and probably always will be).
