the key here is using a small watt amp. IT will pick up small nuances better than software and won't create the phase issues that a higher watt amp is prone to getting. 1/2 watt would do the trick. A high-watt amp like that marshall, even at low volumes isn't going to work in an enclosure that small. Simulators are cool, but I guess it depends on what your trying to sound like. A lot of albums have benefited from a less than perfect sounding amp in recording. In my opinion
A friend of mine built an iso box for my amp. It cut out the sound down of course, but I got really weird frequencies in there. I don't know if it caused phase issues or whatever, but it didn't sound right. Made my amp sound shrilly.
How quiet is this? Got a video of you playing through it to show how much sound bleeds through? I'm looking to build something like this to record with in my apt. Amp Simulation software still doesn't sound right :/
@axxessdenied@axxessdenied .dont expect miracles but fairly good.amp simulation is best i reckon now..amplitube 3 my fave,,,great room mic feature...where if you use just these and turn off close mics and use good headphones or monitors sounds like playing in a room like real thing.ik multimedia done a/b vids on youtube with real amps and they sound identical pretty much...im not affilated..amp sim leagues ahead than getting real amp now i reckon..e.g. in terms of cost
hey im from germany, my english sucks. Didi u answered the question "how quiet is it?" i just want to know how many volume i can swallow with this isolation box..
@BRADHblackdragon Hey man, do you really think so, that GR sounds the same when recorded as an amp....I have GR4 and it does sound good but I can't say it sounds like my superchamp xd....it does sound good but something seems to be missing with the recordings...like fullness of tone and some other things....
@r33d2k hi ,i havent the box anymore..it sounded great though..although guitar sim software now is well on par..iuse that now..the likes of guitar rig 4 and the recent amplitube 3
fair enough mate, my friend uses progs like this, quick question its probably dumb because i'm one of those people who plays guitar but doesn't know anything about it XD is there a way of hooking up my guitar to my pc without using a pod or something, basiclly without spending a wod of cash. i do have a line6 spider 3 75 watt with all the presets n stuff, but there's no room for it in my tiny bedsit :p
@r33d2k well a great way is the alesis guitar link..its literally a guitar jack on one end and a usb link on other.the sound quality wont be fantastic but it'll do.next after that would be a stealth plug by ik multimedia or the guitar rig mobile,i guess
@r33d2k it isnt necessarily better..one factor here is the conversion...from analogue(your guitar)to digital(a form that is needed for pc to process the signal)this is done by 'converters' which vary in quality.
its more a case that u might not be able to just plug in to the mic jack..ive tried i think and i couldnt get to work..i think because the signal is too weak for your guitar software or daw to work with
this doesn't really answer my question dude, i kinda wanted a yes or a no, not i tried "i think" lol, so i know if its worth buying the adapter or not.
cool video, but in your box you havent got enough variation for your mic position, because you have a fix mic stand. better will be a "swan neck", i dont know how you call it in english. havent you enough money for some correct input/mic jacks?
@scottyBoland .its not primarily designed for dropping volume...although it does reduce it...its more to cut reflections ie reverb so sound is just the miked cab and not miked cab and reverb created by that..the box primarily is for dropping volume...try going on ebay to start a search
ahhh well i was just wondering i once dismatled an old jbl l100 century 3 way speaker, from the mid 70's? it was a really popular speaker at its time my dad had 4 so i took the one with most abuse and took it apart the box was stuffed with an insulation like material, so i was wondering if that like the foam you used would make a difference from a hollow sound too a deep sound, like i took it out played it and vice versa and it was deeper with it in, and sounded fuller
yeah good question.for a variety of reasons- ideally..e.g. speakers push air which shapes tone..this is hampered with isobox..no need to worry about damp..just open periodically..the heat could get up in there on hot day...use a thermometer if u like but no real worry as i dont think speakers heat up much
Holy crap, I have never thought of this as a way isolating my guitar amp before. Hell, I was gonna pad my whole closet up and use that to record, but damn it, you've just saved me closet space!
a speaker pushes air-this relates to the sound it gives off...an iso limits this pushing if playing at ultra high volumes...other than that its the preferred setup..e.g. reduction of ambient noise etc..the sm57 worked a treat for me..e.gsome use inferior mics..i tried not to skimp on that and the speaker
what is this, why you put speaker in and totally seal it up, is that a mic in the box?, nice workmanship btw, i have a 10" p,a, speaker do i just need a preamp or a poweramp or bot or is there more i need? thx hope you can help
reduces noise from amp and reduces reflections..the first is for where you cant play a loud tube amp at high levels and the second is so as to get a good recording..e.g. no background noise...it just an amp head into the iso box connecting to a speaker...its miked and then sent to a mixer and then into my pc via soundcard
you need a preamp and then connect that to a power amp. a mixer and power amp should do you fine. the preamp boosts it to levels high enough for effects, eq, recording, etc and the power amp boosts it to levels high enough for the speaker. good luck.
what are the dimensions of your box? im planning on building one and i cant really find any dimensions other than the one for the randall iso box which is 18inx18inx31in.
I live in an apartment, and my neighbors are just on the other side of the wall. They complain about the volume of my amp if it is over volume 3 during the day. So, I'm stuck recording straight into the mixer -which sounds like crap. How loud is the sound from the outside once youve closed it up? I'd like to mic my marshall avt-20, but i need something that leaks little to no sound - i do most of my work late at night.
hi well i was playing a jcm2000 in my apartement...couldnt hear speaker above the computer fan but then again didnt have amp way up....u may be pleasantly surprised..i was but please dont expect the impossible
depending on how loud your recording, you really shouldn't put the mic that close to the speaker cone. especially when it's pointing directly in the centre, because the cone exerts very high Sound Pressure Levels, which can easily ruin the diaphragm of your microphone. Just a tip. Since it's in an isolation box you don't need to worry about room echo. It's best to keep the mic at least 4-5 inches away from the speaker.
I would have to agree with @dsl100stack . You would probably get a better sound if you move that to the middle of the isolation chamber.
