I was surprised at all the damage Fran did to Raleigh with Raleigh being so far inland. I lived in the Perry Creek subdivision at the time and, out of 66 houses, only 20 of our houses didn't get hit by trees. Mine didn't, but I had flooding due my house being very close to the Neuse River. We got evacuated, and it was a big mess. I had to have some friends move all of my stuff out of my house that night in the dark with no power. It was a nightmare.
It sounded like a jet was hovering over the our house for about 10-15 minutes and RDU was closed. It was terrible when the sun came up the next morn and our yard was the only one on the street without a tree down. 80mph gusts and 13 inches of rain in 6 or 7 hours. Fran will always be the hurricane that hit Raleigh / Durham
shoot! i still remember how she howled in wilmington with 120mph winds and gusts higher. the walls of this stick build house were vibrating. had to say goodbye to most of our pecan trees.
I'll never forget the sound of 60 mph sustained wind. I lived 2 miles north of Crabtree Valley Mall. No power for 8 days. Remember the smell of pine the day after the storm? Hey, at 1:10, did anyone else think the truck was going to hit the pedestrians?
Man, i remember the howling wind, trees everywhere and lots of houses with trees all the way through them...hope to never have another. hurricane Hanna made me look to see if any videos of Fran were on here. No damage here from Hanna.
It was bad. I believe we went about two weeks without electricity (sucks living in a rural area)and we have well water here, btw...therefore, no electricity means no water. It was freakin awful but I made ir.
