The question is what did the Muslims accept during the life of the prophet (peace). They accepted what came from the prophet? Prophet was only source acceptable to the Muslims regardless of channel. And that is Islam from Allah and the rasool. Channels are means to the end. The focus has to be the Quran & authentic tradition, because that is what it was during the 23 years. If the prophet is not alive, it does not mean Allah accepts other than that for salvation.
