These remind me of the bombers that bombed my hometown in Germany, Dresden. The entire city was swept up in a fireball that melted humans. It was the true Holocaust. I lost countless relatives and friends. These planes should be pushed off a carrier into the ocean and forgotten. They never brought anyone freedom, just pain, misery and suffering on both sides of the pond.
Nice target to shoot?! WTF! I think you would be a nice little target to shoot . Dipshit. In fact I'd like to use one of the B-17s guns to do the honors.
They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. That's crap! If a woman could have a B-17 or a Mosquito fly above me i would throw myself at her feet!!!
My grandfather was the co-pilot in a B-17 and got shot down over germany but survived and saved everyone but the pilot, he was a great man and i will forever miss him
My grandfather was the co-pilot in a B-17 and got shot down over germany but survived and saved everyone but the pilot, he was a great man and i will forever miss him
My grandfather flew a B-17 in WWII. He got shot down over France and went into the French Underground. He survived and formed AFEES (Air Force Evasion Escapee Society) in the mid 60s. By the way, he's still alive at the bright age of 89.
@xazoulini1 you must know some pretty privileged girls...i'm pretty sure most guys treat their plane/car/boat/tank better than they do their own wife/gf. i mean, i don't expect my plane to make me a sandwich. but i do expect someone to g into the galley and make me one.
My Dad was a ball-turret gunner, flying out of southern Italy in early 1944 (50 combat sortees). What a airplane that was. I had the honor of touring and flying in one a couple of years ago (Tail #909, - Collings Foundation - please support these guys if they come around). Ripped my heart out to actually fly in one of those ships. God Bless those flyers of the 15th and 8th AAF...
deejakway... I wept when I read your post. My grandfather owns the P-51 Mustang which he flew in the Pacific in WWII. My most heartfelt sympathy, but yet my most high adorations for your grandfather. May he Rest in Peace, and may your family rejoice in knowing that he was honored by God for his committment to what he did for America and what he did while he served.
two of these hit each other while flying in formation returning from a bombing run in 1944.happened not far from me on canvey island here in england, they crashed and sadly some of the guys were killed.we have a memorial plaque here in rememberance of these brave men.
For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God(Romans 3:23). The wages of sin is death(Romans 6:23). Repent or perish(Luke 13:5)! For God did not send His son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved(John 3:17). As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live(Ezekiel 33:10). TURN FROM YOUR SINS AND SUBMIT 2 JESUS CHRIST NOW OR BURN IN HELL! Proverbs 29:1
I believe this is the Sentimental Journey. If so, this B-17 never saw combat. I have toured this one among others. She is an amazing plane to walk through. How the boys that flew them into combat is just awesome. We owe everything we have to that generation of men. Thanks to all who served and still do.
ya, but the british dont think so. besides , this thing could carry very few bombs, but it did great. the lancaster was a little the same but the b-17 was built for speed, thats why the body is so empty. they put everthing on the inside, notice how streamlined it is.
I have a son who is 25 and I marvel everytime I think about those young guys who flew these airplanes in WW2. Quite a few of them were younger, particularly among the other crew members. Very brave lads.
yep, this is before we had elactronics, or anything else. the landing gear hyd. pressure went down, you had to hand pump it. they took direct hits and some still made it home. if we used todays pilots and crew, we would have been slautered. they didnt have the technology, but they sure had the strength and determination.
very nice plane. There is a veteran in my town that used to test bombers but probably not flying fortresess. I have heard that without full throttle the thing just falls strait out the sky
RPMs in a B-17 can be reduced to around 1250-1300 for maximum long range performance, full throttle normally can't be sustained over six or seven minutes if the manifold pressure is over 42 inches.
There's been alot of cases where they would come back with engines shot up and not working....so if it needed all 4 engines full power this wouldn't really be possible...Would it. No one would fly anything that was all or nothing....
hey my great uncle was a p-51 mustage piolet and shot down 2 me-109's but u know what i think he escorted one mission of these bombers before. Not sure tho
My grandfather was top turret gunner in a B-17G he died before i knew him but his journal has an amazing story of his life and pics of his time in the service
Awesome. My grandfather was the belly gunner on a B-17 during WWII. Shot down twice and lived and made it back to allied forces both times. I love this plane.
New Castle County, Delaware, U.S.A. Fifty miles North of Dover, Delaware A.F.B. and just outside of Wilmington, Delaware-- a.k.a. -- The chemical capitol of the World -- home of the duPont Company. You may have heard of them.
What a beautiful sound of those prop engines .. really takes one back to the pre-jet age. What type of engine actually powered the B-17 .. Pratt & Whitneys or Wright Cyclones ? or some other engine-design ? I think I heard the commentator state (amongst all of the background noise) that these were Wright Cyclones.
The production version of the B-17 was powered by 4 Wright Cyclone turbocharged radial engines. The prototype that the military approved was initially powered by 4 Pratt & Whitney radial engines but the Wright Cyclone engine was found to be more powerful allowing for longer range & a larger bomb load.
I've been inside a B-17 at the Indy Airshow. Those things are surprisingly tiny. For example, it had two mock 500lb bombs inside the bomb bay, and the walkway through it was only about 6inches across, the room itself being 4-5 ft long. And thats the largest room on the plane.
My grandfather's crew was fighting a bf109 and a FW190 when they crashlanded coming home from Schweinfurt 14 Oct 1943. Bombardier told me that the 190 came in head-on and he could see pieces of the cowl flying off and an exposed piston for the split second they slugged it out, with the plexiglass exploding all around him. GF--left waist gunner--was hit in the head by a piece of exploding 20mm. Both said really scared the gunners was the flak because they could do nothing about it.
The Russians finished the job (after) the Allies bombed the holy crap out of Germany, for weeks on end, thus crippling the Germans ability to produce. The Glorius Russians, then mopped up!

A truely great aircraft if it had not been for the B17 I and my generation would not be here. Pity it did not have the bomb load of the Lancaster.
bigcat178 1 year ago
@bigcat178 Did not have as much pay load as a Lancaster because the 17 had more airmen on board and ammunition for their guns.

I think it's a bit naff to say it makes the Lancaster look crap! They both had their place and their role to play, both very important WWII planes.

The full throttle thing is not correct, because there are several stories of B-17s returning to base with just one engine during WWII.
