Pete, Under the leaves of the old tower, as the almond tree blossoms, a friendly swallow has returned. Every year she returns, always in the same day. She crosses mountains and sea to get back here. Only love flees and does not return. It makes you hope in vain, but it does not return. It makes you hope in vain, but it does not return. Godspeed
I know this version for nearly 20 years now. Who could forget how Pavarotti sings "In the soft twilight of evening springtime is passing... But I am sad and lonely..." It's like reading your favourite poem in the warm sun. Thank you, Maestro!
I learned this song after hearing it accompany the Bellagio water show in Las Vegas. Unfortunately YouTube didn't exist then, and the only complete version I could find on the Net was a RealAudio format by a Korean (!) baritone.
I managed to learn it and sing it in front of my entire company three days later - quite a different timbre than Luciano's ringing tenor, but beautiful in its own way. Wish I had a recording of that moment in time :(
To me this this is Pavarotti's signature performance. The song is perfect for his voice. When one listens to it, your heart and mind dream of Italy (Sorrento for me) - that wonderous country!
Pavoratti is of course my favorite tenor..I was devastated with his passing, though I am only in my twenties. We have been so fortunate and blessed on Earth to have shared his gift. This song captures for me a bit of my sweet childhood (For the musical arrangement reminds me of Disneys Sleeping Beauty". But it also capture the resonant, and unforgettable passion of a young fair youth in love! This is one of my favorite songs by this master Tenor!
I want to thank my mother for the same! I was ten years old when this concert took place, and my mother introduced me to it when it came out on video cassette soon after. I have loved this performance the most ever since.
yes - he'll always be with us - thankyou to you that said that, and to Luciano Pavarotti himself - I've cryed out all moisture from listening to this heartfelt music - it keeps our souls alive THANKYOU
The Bellagio fountain's feature of this song is really icing on the cake, you have to watch that, it's a unique experience hearing this song, watching the fountain dance to this song up front! Can't describe in words..
Where is this video from? like which concert/what year? it was in 90s right?
Es la primera Navidad sin Luciano, cantando, embriagando a la gente con su deliciosa voz, haciendonos soñar y confundir la realidad con la fantasia...Grande Pavarotti, tu voz por siempre!!!!!
This too has become my favorite song since I first heard it at Bellagio's dancing fountains a number of years ago. His outstanding voice and zest for life will be surely missed. There will never be anyone to even match him. May he rest in peace.

Since my last Las Vegas visit, this is my favorite Pavarotti solo. I am saddened by his death, but uplifted my the immortality of his voice. My thanks, Luciano. You are truly the finest of your kind. RIP, paison.
Piango e sono triste, da Amantea -Cosenza un pensiero per il big maestro spero che il signore ti accolga assieme al tuo nido sul palco del teatro che ha messo in piedi appositamente per te , ciao lucià...

It actually is. Try searching Amazon or other online shops for "The Original Three Tenors Concert".
It took place 1990 in Rome, at the Baths of Caracalla and was conducted by Zubin Mehta.

Sotto la gronda della torre antica
Una rondine amica,
Allo sbocciar del mandorlo é tornata.
Ritorna tutti gli anni,
Sempre alla stessa data;
Monti e mare essa varca per tornar.
Solo amore
Quando fugge e va lontano
Speri in vano ma non torna più
Speri in vano ma non torna più

100% fitting melody, isn't it? I love this song. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. After E lucevan le stelle, it's one of my favourites :-)

Nella penombra dolce della sera
Passa la primavera.
Cinguettano le rondini nol volo,
Ebbre di luce e daria
Ed io son triste e solo;
Mia piccina,
fosti tutta la mia vita;
Sei fuggita e non torni più
Sei fuggita e non torni più
