i remember hearing one of the cranes songs about ten years ago when i was around ten and the haunting vocals and melodys actually scared me. ive listened to hundreds of diffrent bands and genres and the only other thing that has that effect is portisheads take on trip hop, just try to listen to the song cowboys and not feel impending doom
I'm glad I have an open mind. Otherwise I never would've enjoyed the beauty of Alison's voice, and I'd just be banging my head mindlessly to Cannibal Corpse and Slayer for the rest of my life like most teenage,American metalheads.
i found the song 'dont wake me up' from watching californication and loved it, but i find a lot of their songs sound the same to me and her singing voice is hard to understand. it's disappointing because their overall sound is gorgeous, but lacks clarity.
@cleaboy, that has to be fun. i 'discovered' them after i bought 'loved' from a used cd shop in 1995. i've been hooked on them ever since. amazing band, aren't they?!
have you been able to find any info on them recording anything new?
Rediscovered the Cranes only very recently. Saw them live only once in a small bar in St. Mary's in Southampton in 1989. Bought the album and thought that was all they had ever done. Turns out they are still going even today! I was amazed and just bought all their albums and am enjoying catching up. Would have loved to have seen them with the Cure, one of my other favorites of all time.
In a big sea of incomparable, amazing waif-singing bands (Portishead, The Sundays, Mono, Shelleyan Orphan, Sneaker Pimps, Cocteau Twins, etc etc), The Cranes have always stood out as exquisite & precious.
And that voice...
-3-3-3
I too saw them open for The Cure (with Dinosaur Jr.!) back in the day!!!
Gorgeous. It was a shame when they toured for Future Songs, they hadn't played this song in years, she told me. They didn't even know how to play it anymore.
this was the first Cranes song I ever heard, on the Chart Show (remember that?) on a Saturday Morning in the early 90s. i was totally blown away and went to buy the single and album straight away. Saw them play in Brighton in 93 on the Forever tour, which was probably their best album. so unique, fascinating, uncompromising. They're still going I think.
So beautiful. I remember going to a special signing they did at Tower Records in Glasgow in September 1991 and only 7 people turned up, which was a bit "avant guarde" for them. But they put all of us on the guestlist for the concert that night :-) In a parallel universe Cranes are always number 1...
piedad... por favor piedad... que no resistiría otra canción como esta... me llena de tanta nostalgia... Alisson...una inquisidora de la melanciçolía, excelente!!
Beautiful song. I was supposed to see them open for The Cure (must have been in '92) and they couldn't get their visas or something. Too bad I never got to see them.
Cheers for posting this! First time I heard them was supporting The Cure in Dublin '92, was at the signing in Comet Records earlier that day and it meant nothing to me at the time - kicking myself now!
Course there is. But you gotta realize how many of the "shoegaze" era band pushed their vocals down in the mix for atmosphere. This influenced the vocal sound of a lot of other bands.
a beautiful song from a beautiful album.. in the early 90's this was one of my favorites.. years later it still has the same effect on me... btw, the "baby in a biscuit tin" reference is laughs but that is part of their appeal.. love her voice
Hope history quickly saw that reviewer removed from their poorly chose of vocation (no doubt it wasn't their only faulty perception or failure to appreciate)! Regardless, from all I've read, this reviewer you speak of found themselves on the very lonely side of the fence with that opinion! : )
This is one of my favoritist songs ever. It's perhaps the only song that rivals 9 while 9 by Sisters of Mercy as my absolute fave. I don't think a year will go by, for the rest of my life, without listening to Tomorrows Tears at least a few times.
@mrethrift Outstanding reference there with the Nine While Nine Song by the Sisters of Mercy. That's probably my all time favorite song. Such dark lyrics yet the song is somehow upbeat in spite of the extreme darkness contained in the lyrics.
I'll never forget the last time I put my copy of Wings of Joy in the CD player. Tomorrow's Tears was the song playing when the accident happened and I almost died. I can honestly say when I thought for sure I was dying and everything started to fade out, thinking that Alison Shaw's voice would be the last voice I ever heard wasn't such a sad thing.
I've always found this song to be vaguely redolent of some sketchily-defined,poorly-dissembled childhood scar of the emotional kind that resists healing....Just my impression.
Thank you - first I've ever heard of Cranes, and this is wonderful! I've put it on my favorites. Does have a hint of the Cure, a touch of the Sundays, but wholly unique. Thanks again for posting it.
Is there nothing more beutiful? My heart almost stopped when I saw them live in chicago in 1997.The band was all energy and allison was stunningly radiante.

It was on the Chart Show on ITV that I first saw this and heard about
Cranes. It was played as a new release. I never thought anyone could
supercede the Cocteau Twins in terms of beautiful imagination but
instantly on hearing the old music room piano and then Alison's hauntingly
lovely vocals they became the best band in the world to me.

"Baby in a biscuit tin"
Kinda funny. Reminds me what someone said about my fav band. (A local band) Sounds like someone pissing in a steel-bucket.
As a fan I am supposed to be offended. But the description is not that far-fetched.
So what? Still a great band, and I like them the way they are.
This "girl trapped in a tin-box" is what makes Cranes genuine and beautiful.
