To bad the Elan is so ugly that no one would ride it. I see a lot of them for sale under 10.000 euros in here. The performance is really good, but everybody likes the MX5 much better. The shape is really not well, it looks big and fat. And maybe because it has FWD no self-respecting sportscar-fan wants it, no matter how well it handles. I prefer the Elise or Esprit, simply because they look better. I guess I can blame it on the Americans (GM) then eh... :)
@shadmonk - By making such statement you have proven to have very little knowledge of the Elan and the engineering that Lotus put into both its suspension/chassis and its weight distribution. Or, are you also going to claim the Mini Cooper S is not a "true" sports car because it's FWD and shaped like a box?
Or the 911 Carrera, because it has a rear seat...?
What other *true* sports car are you going to debunk because they don't fit a standard mold?
@hotchalupa ;;;;oh yes you're right ! all the great sports cars are FWD!!!. pleaseeee!> RWD is obviously the way to go.. ok fwd can be alright, but it just doesnt compare. ASk a car manufacturer to make a sports car for true performance, and not one of them will design it with FWD...... Only if they are trying to sane money or comporomise in some way...................This is a fact that is quite well known
10 years ago had one of these and it was very relliabe and lots of fun to drive. The car was actually owned by Van Halen lead singer David Lee Roth and then he traded it in and I got it. Silver with Black leather. Great fun.
The old Lotus Elan looked soooo much better... less weight, a little less horsepower, and no stupid, ugly bodywork or asinine electronics. It was a true sports car, one of a long-dead species of automobile.

This was the Lotus they unfortunately sold to Proton or KIA, didn't they?
They took good care and comprehensively ruined it. Great Lotus is still alive and well...
