  • *origins, me pardon

  • @jameswcollette: Lol, that kinda reminds me of the irigins of the word quiz. And with the effect of people wondering, the lyrics kinda get a certain literary value =)

  • This song is old but gold <3

  • nice song, but, can anyone tell me in what the lyrics are about?

  • @Jesteria78 The lyrics are, I believe, officially nonsense. I recall reading on a Nik Kershaw website or blog by the man himself many moons ago that he had a tune but no lyrics and was running out of time to record the song in the studio, so he went off and blitzed out a bunch of random stuff that subsequently got people wondering about its true meaning.

  • 3:16 fail..

  • It's so lovely to listen to REAL music. You know when it's real when you get chills, and just feel like the world is a happy place.

  • @Meroboy

It sure does this to me still after nearly 27 years of listening to it! It means so many things to me on so many levels.

  • Actually not a stadium music, but Nik performs as if it were. That is one of the greatest songs ever sung, really. Love it to death.

  • Nick Kershaw , we will always remember you , the legend .

I was a big fan in the 80s when I was a teenager and I still am .

And he still write music today , go check it out.

  • I like the version of Gigi D'Agostino better but I like this one to :D P.S. I'm a 16 years old boy

  • @JannickVaars

I'm 13, and I like Nik's version better. Gigi's was good, but the origional is always the best.

    I wouldn't know about this song if I didn't get a dsi...flipnote hatena....

  • Such a beautiful song...it hurts!

  • @Perle3456 It's true. And totally amazing considering the lyrics were literally nonsense.

  • round and around

  • very underated artist great talent

  • I was born 4 years too late for this, DAMN IT!!!!!

  • I remember sat on a lad's shoulders in '85 and screaming my head of to Nik Kershaw - best day of my life 13 July 1985!

  • Rest in Peace Nik. You deserve it.

  • @suprtommyman ??? He's still alive, at least according to Wikipedia.

  • @suprtommyman Mr. Kershaw is very much alive and well.

  • @suprtommyman he is still alive ive went to see him

  • 11 people don't know how to solve the riddle.

  • Gahd I love that song ^_^

  • his songs fill me with joy and theres a lot of thought goes into them! I know he wasent to keen on I wont let the sun go down on me but what a tune that was!

  • fantastic

  • aces pub in lafayette ,indiana nik play a gig!

  • 11 people doesn't have strong arms.

  • I remember I used to listen to this every day a couple of years ago. I had this small (big, hehe) crush on Nik, believe it or not.

The Riddle is still the most played song on my iPod, if you know what I mean.

  • 0:37 jizz in the pants

  • His co-singer is out of tune...

  • @dziltener he is out of tune sometimes too, like at the first verse

  • @sabirulo most live stuff does that, not just nick but pretty much everyone

  • Wow, clear Pinstripe on the snare... a rare sight indeed!

  • this song never gets old...

  • @acegotflows you´re right one of the greates songs in our time

  • wattttt()

  • Brill song! Love the hair!!!!!

  • grahamroo, thank you for the compliment. All credit however should go to artists like Nik Kershaw. This man is talent personified.

  • Hahaha, they should rename themselves "Mullet band".This song is pure legend!

  • this is a performance to die for! the drums at the beginning sounded amazing!

  • I really love this one. All the music of 1960- 80 is beautiful. Not like this fucking new bullshit , like Lady GaGa, Jason Derulo, and all this motherfucking idiots. How I'd like to be born in that time.

  • @Eframeful maybe between the years 1960- 2000 (chart) music (like this stuff) was at it's best. But yeah your right good point about older music being much better and meaning more than it does now. Nowadays i wouldnt even call some of that stuff on the UK top 20 any form of 'music'! Stuff in the charts now, well It's more like a piercing noise now with no thought behind it at all. To be fair to Lady G, she has the right idea at least as to what Music is (unlike Pitbull, Derulo, Ne-Yo, Snoop, etc

  • why I burn at 90's? and not at 60-80's ?

  • I was 7 when the whole 'live aid' thing happened. love the 80s to bits :D

  • 3:16 backing vocals fail.

  • @Aehro yup its fail, but song still rock!

  • @Aehro And will still be remembered over 20 years later. Hehe

  • I love his smile at the beginning..^^

  • Very nice Nik =)

  • The hair is beautiful :D!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think you shouldent compaire modden musik and musik out of that time i personaly like that song ore what if god is one of us but time goes on and moddden musik is fitted in to tenn life drinking and fucking (ps) williams is good

  • god I was there, no wonder halfway through I fell asleep....

  • The Band Wannabeees his hair! XD. the hair group!

  • Was Nik having an off day? His voice sounds worn... Interesting to hear him a little deeper in tone, though his note hitting wasn't as spot on (Keeping well in mind its still 100 times better than me!) Awesome Riddle Nik!

  • @TheLurMan1 He was probably VERY nervous.

  • @TheLurMan1 He probably couldn't hear himself over all that was going on around him, the mics only picked up him and not the crowd. He doesn't have In Ear Monitors in his ears, and I don't know toomuch about the live music busness, but I think this was before they were invented.

  • OMG I was mad for this Brit......he was the Robbie WIlliams of the 80's....I loved him so much!

  • @kathyuk28

Robbie WIlliams??? Now are u fucking nuts?? Robbie WIlliams is a poor cretin, totally unable to put 2 chords togather.. PISS OFF!!

Actually, if the 80's are so celebrated and missed is because of the poor quality ppl like Robbie WIlliams brought to music..

Take That, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga are all in the same thread of shit! They killed the music!!

  • @kathyuk28

  • @novembrine1

It´s so great to listen people with your opinion. 80s music are medicin for humanity. It goes beyond taste. Anyways, the 80s have the best music ever written and performed.

Greetings from Argentina, the country of TANGO !!!

  • @novembrine1 I know... This was era when pop singers had political awareness.

  • @novembrine Novemetc you are completely wrong, and for some reason need to resort to swearing as your arguement is unsustainable, kathyuk28 is correct. You my friend need to broaden your horizons.Let me take you through an educational retrospective of music (exc classical).70`s,the best by a country mile, followed by the 00`s (naughties),then the 60`s (influential), .the 40`s, (boogie and swing)the 50s(birth of rock and roll and modern music)the90`s needed to get back on track from the crap 80`s

  • @lagerandwine

Educational ???? Gallagher bros??? Poor cretins indeed!

Wait are Gallagher bros those morons who claimed to be more famous than Beatles except they ended up ripping off their tunes?

Those two, only known for being drunk farts, hitting eachothers at every show, and no one recalls a single tune of theirs???

And finally playing 80's covers on stage: v=GA7cyLcwHi4

    Yeah it must b them!!

  • @novembrine1 Novetc i`m not even going to reply to your message,.....oh dear i have, how ironic, quite similar to oasis being more famous than the ruttles, whoops sorry i meant the beatles.

  • @lagerandwine Excuse me did I understand your comment correctly? In your view the 80s music was crap? And the 00s music is not bad? Are you denying that the 80s were not revolutionary and that creativity was at an all time high? Thanks to the 80s technology and innovation, we can enjoy a lot of what we have today (in terms of tech). I do agree with you about the music of the 70s, 60s, 50s and 40s but to deny that the 80s music was not great seems to be atrociously wrong.

  • @80srule4ever Yes you did understand my comment. All 80s music was not crap i will grant you that, just the trite pop. It was the start of the slippery slope to the media run drivel we have today. Revolutionary?........I cant think of any, although i stand to be enlightened. Creativity was great, I guess new romantics would be classed as 80s, and Musclebound was utter class.

  • @lagerandwine Oh yes, the media run drivel is a correct interpretation on your part. About the "revolutionary" term I used, one has to consider that with the new micro chip and the use of synths and computers, the music scene developed in a manner that had never been heard before. And, also the creation of music videos. The 80s were revolutionary in terms of technology and music was a huge part of that influence; allowing for creativity to reach incredible levels.

  • Cor blimey, he cant sing for shit, but he does make some great music!

  • What a day this was!

  • it was where?i was alive?but really i feel alive now that i heard this....(sorry bad english)

  • Ale jestem UPALONY !!!!! :))) Kurfa jak ja tu trafił ?

  • I remember being glued to the TV during LIVE AID 85. How can one ever forget? Let's remember that LIVE AID was for a good cause. Brilliant music plus giving aid to Africa -- the unforgettable 80's.

  • @80srule4ever here's another one that was glued, fab, fab show and vibe!

  • @DRPatJon Yes! And I wonder if there could ever be another LIVE AID ??? Well, we did care about things and people in those days . . .

  • this guy was brilliant

  • soooo awsome my favorite song

  • NOW THIS IS GIVING THE BEST OF YOURSELF AWAY FOR AN EVENING!

.... for the already born and breathing but NOT taken care of children in Africa.

  • music reprise par pakito

  • Yes, there is a clear meaning in this song. In particular, the chorus (and old man, a hole, a tree, a river,...). But I don't know yet, it's pure Alchemy (the only and primitive religion, and the Science of sciences).

  • that stadium was packked up the ass.was that like the woodstock of the 80's ?

  • Sigh!

  • Wowowowowowww, my herooooo!

  • shit, mullets everywhere!!

  • @zeitgeist3 Lol !

  • fuckin yeah!

  • At 3:16 one of his backup signers starts singing the chorus too early... Not the best mistake to make in front of a billion TV viewers worldwide...but I guess he is human.

  • @EmerGent95

    Near a ...

    Near a tree by a river~

  • @EmerGent95 almost as good as Nik actually forgetting the words to Wouldn't It Be Good, =D - things like that just make you love ém all the more!

  • Geez this really takes me back to exactly where I was when I watched this..

awesome! Nik Kershaw is a legend

  • 大好きな曲です。 貴重なLIVE音源アップに感謝です。 LIVEAID1985 のDVDに入っていたらいいのにとかなり残念です。

  • god i was 10!!! but finding out the bloody meaning of this song was probably what kept me alive LOL no but i am serious!

maybe one of the only people who could carry off a mullet like that - bless him Nik Kershaw :) xx

  • @maskiflynn Sorry to ruin your deep train of thought, but this song has no meaning. I know, I was in search for the answer to The Riddle for ages, until I found out it had none.

  • @EmerGent95

He (Nik) did say that The Riddle was a bunch of nonsense.

  • @Muppio for the record, the answer is a light house,

  • @arcangelsfury

    I knew it! :-P

  • @EmerGent95 maybe that's the Riddle of the Riddle!!! ;)

  • just perfect

  • Same hair McGyver´s!

  • Long time no see...

  • What a man

  • Way ahead of the time.

    Prolific writer and genious.

  • Where is he now ?!

  • @gileprecednik91 also still performing, he recently did a tour of England and Ireland, Solo Acoustic, absolutely mind blowing awesome!!!!!!

  • Rica la guitarra wn!!!! De lo mejor de los 80's junto con talk talk y otros pocos.

  • Love the haircuts!!

  • forbidell!!!!oooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhh..................

  • nice hair

  • czemu dziś nikt nie umie robić takich ponadczasowych hitów? .Genialne !

  • @TheFarmer39 wlasne nie wiem. kocham the riddle i nik kershaw!! (L)

  • class song !!!

  • Nik the Man did well. Any discerning music listener should applaud his MASSIVE effort during Live Aid '85. He could eat idiots like say, Robbie Williams and

Ronan I-do-covers-for-a-living Keating, for breakfast. THIS is talent !!

  • @cytotoxix absolutely agree 100%

  • @cytotoxix correct

  • @cytotoxix

love ur comment! ur just right. i agree.

  • @cytotoxix

Sorry but robbie williams is one of the rare modern pop singers who still writes his own music. Mkay?

  • @popace He does write some of his own songs, but not all of them. Some of his biggest hits weren't wrote by him. Guy Chambers wrote most of Angels, Let me entertain you, millennium and a lot of Robbie's other songs. After they had a disagreement Robbie tried to write his own and they were pretty dire.

  • go go Niiiiiik! 5 stars performance! :X

  • Wow! Just WOW!

  • AWESOME SONG I GOT 2 STORNG ARMS!!

  • @makkertje95 lol not exactly...

  • @makkertje95 je , ik vinf dit liedje geweldig, en

"i won't let the sun go down on me " is ook een goeie, vind je?

  • Tenho absoluta certeza de que a platéia não colabou com a banda devido ao fato do show ter começado muito cedo. Acho que nesse dia estava muito quente.

  • It sounds really good! There were a few mistakes, so what? I don't think there was much time to rehearse before, plus singing live would be really daunting, I admire anyone who can do it, especially in front of a huge audience like that! He looks a bit insecure, it's a shame , he doesn't seem to know how much talent he has... I think it's refreshing to see something live, it's more real.

  • @xLovexLaurenx

I love this song but if you search for Queen at Live Aid it shows how it should be done.

  • awesome :)

  • i tried singing the riddle and it wasnt freaking hard. Totally explains why nik was like "wow", at the end.

  • i mean it was* freaking hard

    sorry for typo.

  • Unfortunately the backing vocals are totally out of tune... the chorus sounds aweful.

  • WOW al those people :o

  • Nick sings better live than Le Bon anyway

  • and at 0:45, i hear an error with the piano, at 0:51 when he says "I got", at "i", its lower than got, and in the beggining, the drummer does an extra solo! XD but they still rock

  • yeah yeah, and at 3:15 , he starts singing too early...

i could never sing a song live in front of such a big crowd....i admire everyone who make it nevertheless so well

  • he didnt sing too early, it was supposed to start already during then, wasnt it?

  • THIS IS MY NEW FAVE SONG ALL TIME!!!

cytotoxix was right, i noticed some errors, and the singing came in late and too early.

  • @maxluvshalo

but WHITOUT THIS song, there wouldnt be a mix of gigi D agostino.

  • FFS they were playing LIVE, did you want it to sound just like the single?? I thought they were bloody brilliant and so did the rest of the audience!

  • They weren't there..but Queen was,and they more than made up for it.

  • Queen were true professionals. The best performance in the concert.... Freddy Mercury, what a waste!

  • Live Aid was a great concert, even if legendary bands like Fleetwood Mac, ELO, Duran Duran, and the Bee Gees were absent. A pity, because they could have made the moment even more special.

  • Duran Duran was at Live Aid - late on the Philadelphia ticket. Played View To a Kill, Union of the Snake, Save a Prayer and The Reflex. "View" was left out because of a wicked bum note Simon hit late in the song.

  • Live Aid apparently was a challenge to all artists participating as there was no time to prepare or rehearse. Which is why I think people must understand and forgive those that played false notes or sang too late or too early. Phil Collins for instance played a false piano note in "Against all Odds". In The Riddle, the artists starting singing again too early at 3:16. These "errors" at least prove one thing : that there was NO miming during Live Aid.

  • Something we see to much of these days, even at very expensive gigs. (miming that is)

  • "Come on, let us hear you whistle" is what Nik the Man was saying to the Wembley crowd.

  • Someone needs to do a Metal version of this song - classic.

  • @WarMetalEternal

A Metal Version? Then try Thunderstones one, should be Metal enought!

    Pints up!
