I never use a shield! I know it's really bad but I have magic (Sparks) in my leg hand for times when I am backing out and then a weapon (Mace or Axe) for when im attacking. I'm probably gonna need one on a higher level but works for me right now

You get the flames power magicky thingy at the start of the game, as soon as you get your hands unbound, just press TAB, Y, or circle then go left to magic and equip FLAMES!!

@TobyGames I would advise using the best shield you can get, and use weapons appropriate for the task at hand. Example: Don't kill skeletons with daggers. Use blunt or crushing weapons. Hope it helps!
