That's really interesting, can any one go and look or do you have to phone the Uni and ask permission?
Sophie was a very brave young woman, when I watched the film I was so incensed with the care taker who turned them in I could have thrown him over the bloody balcony.
@1nizza a great hero--but I would have to say Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer a black sharecropper from Miss. Look at he videos--no disrespect to Sophie Scholl God bless her
I have the DVD of the film starring Julia Jensch and Alexander Held. The way they were put to death gave me a nasty jolt and the movie didnt pull any punches in that respect.Suddenly the picture turns black and there are awful gruesome sounds that need no description.
I get the impression that only in the last few years has Germany finally decided to address this period in her history cinematically ; films such as Downfall and this that I have just mentioned.
I did not know that there was a film on this subject but would watch it if I had the chance.
Downfall is from 2004 but the film Stalingrad is from 1992 and is pretty brutal - in fact I think it is the best war film I have seen. I have it at home in German although it is available on you tube in English!
Alan, another amazing WW2 war movie - the best in my book! - is 'Come And See', a Soviet made film from 1985 about the German invasion of Belorussia, told from the perspective of a young boy who joins the partisans.
It's posted here on YT: watch?v=nIgnwQkZ56k
Another great one is 'Before the Fall (Napola)' , a recent German move centered around 2 teenaged boys at a Nazi boarding school, a so-called Nationalpolitische Erziehungsanstalt.
I have decided that I wont be going to Berlin next week. I ought to be at the conference but as I will be in Madrid the following week, it is a bit much. I cannot spend all my life on holiday!
'Come And See' is told from an intensely personal perspective rather than a big historical battle epic. The film is incredibly realistic unless you don't believe that Germans looted and massacred whole villages in the East; the violent climax of CaS depicts such an incident. There is a Wikipedia entry on the film with an excellent plot summary.
Have fun in Madrid; btw, there is nothing wrong with spending a good chunk of your life on holiday if you can afford it. ;-)
Thank you very much!!! Happy birthday to you too!!! I should be in Berlin now but I am in Warsaw. Madrid is next week!! I am really looking forward to it!!
@alanheath Ah well Wilma sent me a copy in German with Dutch and French subtitles.I alwayus chose the Dutch although I didn't have a big vocabulary at the time. However by listening to the German and reading the Dutch I was able to work out the English.
@llewesa100 That is very good - I would have read it in French as the easiest option. I find that Dutch is relatively easy to understand when it is written although of course ik spreekt geen nederlands!
To step naked into a pool of circling sharks, who would do that? Only someone who cares more about the greater good than they do about themselves. These people were enormously generous of spirit and idealistic. The world needs more like them.
The White Rose are some of the biggest heroes of any age in my book. Their courage is mindblowing to me, especially Sophie and Hans Scholl, but also the other 4 who died for their convictions.
How about Sophie going in front of that madman Freisler and having the balls to say: "You know as well as we do that the war is lost. Why are you so COWARDLY that you won't admit it?"
I still don't get why they in essence sacrificed themselves dropping leaflets in the open like that.
Yes, Sophie was the boldest of them all. I've watched all the Freisler footage on YT and nobody ever dared to call him anything to his face.
Thinking rationally, it was insane for them to be dropping leaflets in such a small space. Apparently, they got caught dropping leftovers stuck in the suitcase deciding it would be a pity not to distribute them. BAD MOVE!
I never plan anything for my B-day but I shall remember the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. U got special plans?
Ironically enough, I am supposed to be in Berlin the week before my b-day but to be quite honest I have had enough travelling. The following week I am in Madrid so it is a bit difficult. I suppose I will go for a pizza or something equally interesting!!
I wish I could behead the custodian! R.i.p white rose!!! :)

Thanks for the tip - I will have a look.
As a rule I am extremely suspect of Soviet films!

I will certainly watch it on your recommendation when I have an evening free.
I studied in Madrid so am looking forward to it. I have not been there since 1992. I only came back from Russia last week (films to come...)

As far as I am aware Sophie is the only one who really stood up to Freisler - what courage!!
You can see from this film how small the atrium actually is in the university! They were bound to get caught yet they continued to act in this way!
We have another birthday coming up in two weeks time. Are you doing anything special?
